Had an excellent stay at Hyatt Regency Downtown for a work conference. Close to public transit and the MOMA. Staff friendly and helpful. Room clean and modern. Elevators were quick. Would definitely stay again!

I’m a seasoned traveler, so my tolerance for BS is pretty high. I’ve logged 35k YTD alone. But I have to say, this hotel stay is the worst I’ve had in years. I roll in to the Hyatt Soma at nearly 9 PM after a six-hour transcon, only to find out they've run out of king-sized beds. They only have doubles. I think, "Okay, no big deal," and the lovely lady at the front desk offers to switch my room the next day. I politely decline. It wouldn't be the first time I've settled for less. I get to my room, and it's clear it hasn't been cleaned well. There are hairs everywhere—and trust me, they aren't mine (I’m a guy with brown hair, see attached). Strike one. I see that they leave this nice note about sustainability: swapping bottled water for a pitcher to use with a filter down the hall. Great idea, right? I fill it up and pour myself a big cold glass of water—only to find a huge, gross stain in the pitcher and little particles floating in my drink after I've gulped it down. Strike two. It’s late, I’m tired. I grab my bottled water and try to sleep, except this loud noise is coming from the wall since I’m next to the elevator. Let’s say my sleep was less than stellar. Strike three.
The next morning, I hop in the shower to get ready—and surprise, surprise- no hot water. I need to be somewhere in an hour, so I grin and bear it, then call the front desk and ask them to fix it. Strike four. It’s a typical long day of a work trip. I leave at about 8:30 am. I don't get back to the hotel until about 10 pm. I know I’m out of bottled water, and the store attached to the hotel isn’t open, so I head to the front desk for more. Then the clerk has the nerve to condescendingly lecture me about asking for more bottled water- and says that he will make an exception get me one bottle but won’t give me more and that I need to use the pitcher. I just walk away from him mid-lecture because if not, I will be arrested for assault. I mean, who the heck does this guy think he is, Greta Thurnberg? I’m a guest. Strike five The following day, I have to be at an event at 7 am, so I come down at a very reasonable 6 am looking for coffee- I see the coffee shop is closed, ad so I ask the clerk, who says there is no coffee anywhere in the hotel until 630 and rudely suggests I should use my room coffee maker- which is also visibly dirty. I swear at her and head upstairs. Strike six. Seriously Hyatt, screw you and the horse you rode in on. Whoever the male working the front desk the night of 4/17 should be fired or transferrred to Hyatt Place in Alaska. Lots of options in this area- do yourself a favor and don’t stay here. Read less
