The hotel

After a big renovation at the end of 2019, you’ll get to check out a brand new Union Square hotel. The Clift Royal Sonesta is a stunning meeting of the glamourous Italian Renaissance-style and the beautiful modern design, reflective of this cutting edge city. The legendary Redwood Room, always a San Francisco favourite, has been refreshed while preserving its iconic history, and there's a new bistro to check out. Even the bees are busy producing honey on the rooftop, ready to add to your drinks and salads.

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Good basic hotel

Good quality basic hotel, but not the premium experience it's priced at. The hotel is very noisy as there is little to no sound proofing between rooms. The rooms themselves feel a little tired and unloved. Bathroom amenities offered are very basic and not the standard I would expect considering the price paid.

The Clift is a classic old San Francisco haunt with modern luxury. I love staying here when I'm in the city. The rooms are sleek, clean, and fairly large. Great for relaxing. The lobby still has some of the old-school charm, plus the giant chair. The bar is a classic, and great place to unwind. It is in a bit of a rough neighbourhood, but… Read more

It is in a bit of a rough neighbourhood, but only 5 minutes' walk to Union Square. It is not the cheapest hotel in SF, but worth it for a bit of a splurge. Note that in addition to the room rate, there will be 7 other taxes and fees added separately, including taxes on the fees! Welcome to California... Read less

The beds made us oversleep as they were so comfy (ha ha ) Loved San Fransisco ! we were advised where not to go by the reception and stayed well clear . Plenty of places to eat and shop in the immediate area - Union Square . A visit to The RedRoom bar is a must and we had a really lovely evening in the company of Jackie. Would recommend , a step back in time Read less

Stayed here on the first night of our road trip. Picked something that was near Union Square. Was able to walk to Clipper (airport), restaurants, Muni (bus) and still no safety issues. Staff was friendly and room/bedding were comfortable.

Excellent location, well-appointed rooms, and my young family felt very safe. We visited San Francisco for a day before driving to a wedding in Yosemite and were very pleased with this property. The valet made check in a breeze and the rooms were comfortable, had nice views and my young children appreciated the hot chocolate instead of coffee for the Keurig. A weird but notable thing to notice were the hallways leading to the rooms. It had a historic high-end, spacious feeling to them that I appreciated. Several restaurants to dine at so it felt very popular but not noisy. We were a little discouraged by some of the reviews but my husband and I walked with my parents and our 2 young children (3 & 5) to the trolley onboarding platform a few blocks down, went to the wharf and returned at night from the Cable Car. We also walked to Union Square the next morning, and did not encounter anything upsetting or out of the ordinary. The staff at check in were very quick and responsive when we needed anything.
