The hotel

After a big renovation at the end of 2019, you’ll get to check out a brand new Union Square hotel. The Clift Royal Sonesta is a stunning meeting of the glamourous Italian Renaissance-style and the beautiful modern design, reflective of this cutting edge city. The legendary Redwood Room, always a San Francisco favourite, has been refreshed while preserving its iconic history, and there's a new bistro to check out. Even the bees are busy producing honey on the rooftop, ready to add to your drinks and salads.

Good Hotel...not great but perfect for a small trip. San Francisco is not what it used to be and Union Sqare is not the place it used to be. The hotel was fine. I had a very good deal so the price/value was great. Staff was very nice, rooms were big and comfy. Again, do not expect anything extraordinary but you will be OK.

Please listen to the voice recording that I shared on google maps. This is the sound that you hear all night if you sleep on the 16th floor. 1. Placed me into the worst room next to the elevator machinery that woke me up multiple times at night. This almost caused heart attack. They had other room options but still placed me here. 2. When I called in asking about the sound, they immediately told me it’s the elevator machinery. The phone operator (not the front desk) told me they had customers who love this noise. It’s my problem that I don’t. This is the most interesting phone call experience. I wish I have the phone call recording, but please listen to the video before you choose here. Read less

I have stayed at this property before and both of my stays have been great. The room is spacious and I love that there is an empty mini fridge. The location is very close to Union Square and so convenient. The staff have always been wonderful and accommodating.

Loved this hotel. Superb central location and excellent staff who really looked after us. Only a 5 minute walk to Union Square where the trams go by. Also the hop on hop off buses can be joined at Union Square. We'd certainly keep this hotel in mind if we return.

So this hotel is super nice and a super great location. I stayed here perhaps 40 years ago for my high school graduation present. This hotel used to be a four seasons but the sonesta is doing an excellent job and running it and it seems to be from my limited one night experience a very classy place. I booked this hotel with Expedia and I have a platinum card so I got $30 worth of free cocktails which was great. $33 equals a cocktail for my boyfriend and a glass of sparkling wine for me we were both happy with that extra perk. I also got a one category room upgrade with a very beautiful view but the room is kind of small. I'll tell you what I don't like I don't like that infernal resort fee. They shouldn't have it cuz they don't have a pool they gave me two bottles of water and I'm paying $38 US dollars that's insanity per night that is on an extra 18% to the cost of my hotel room. Also parking is frightfully expensive I left my car in Oakland and took Bart in. My boyfriend also like the hotel and we would definitely say there again there's a little bit of a problem with the water pressure in the shower. I found the staff to be extremely professional and very friendly and it met my high standards. I rarely go into San Francisco but I have some business in Oakland so we just did it for romantic one night getaway. If you go there you might want to eat and Chinatown cuz there are some fantastic restaurants there. I would definitely stay here again. Read less
