The hotel

A luxury hotel in the heart of the city combining modern features with contemporary on-of-a-kind design, the Proper Hotel Santa Monica is a proper treat. The rooftop pool is the only one you’ll find in the area, so nab a sunbed or treat yourself to an alcove for the day for that added relaxation – no need to move, just have your drinks and food delivered to you, they’ll even supply the suncream, you’ll need it on those summer days. The hotel may not be situated on the coastal front, but it positions you in great proximity to bars and restaurants, and the local farmers market which is a must visit. You’ll feel more of a local in this hangout, a step away from the obvious tourist spots. When you do want to visit the beach (who wouldn’t?!), it’s only a short stroll away, or hop on an eLECTRA bike to get you there even quicker. Of course, Santa Monica has plenty of trendy restaurants to visit, but the hotel have got some fantastic offerings of their own, chill out in Palma when you need a break from the hot weather or a late night apertif. Or if you want to soak up those rays with a chilled drink in hand then Calabra offers fantastic poolside views, with a sushi menu available Thursday – Sunday for those sashimi lovers.

The Proper was the first stop for my husband and I on our honeymoon- we wanted so badly to like it, however it did not meet expectations. From the ridiculous wait everytime you need help from the front desk, to the tiny “cruise ship like” room (by the way, no upgrades available while utilizing AMEX Platinum perks- in our years of utilizing these perks we have never experienced that). Woke up to an automated text for noon check out when we specifically noted we would be taking advantage of our 4 PM check out. The lack of professional from the staff was astounding. There were issues with elevators which led us to climbing flights of stairs- no help with bags, you won’t be greeted, expect to open your own door everywhere you go. We did complain about the elevator issues and conveniently there was an upgrade available- we waited 2 hours for our new room. Don’t even try the restaurant- upstairs or downstairs. You will wait 20 minutes for water, spend the night searching for your server, and no initiative to help- this is not a 5 star experience and NOT worth the price. My husband and I are not picky people, however we know what service we should be receiving for the price and it doesn’t not match! Spend your money elsewhere!!! Read less

We’ve now stayed at the Santa Monica Proper multiple times, and each visit just gets better and better. It’s getting harder and harder to leave, and the last day always feels a little depressing because we never want to go! Honestly, we joke about wanting to move in and become full-time residents. Jeremy, Felipe and the entire team have created something truly special. From the moment we arrive, everyone is incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. Any request we have is met with a smile and impeccable service. A special shoutout to the valet team – they are absolutely the best. We call for our car frequently and never once feel like we’re inconveniencing them. They are always so kind and welcoming. It's hard to leave the rooms because they are truly special. The attention to detail in the design is remarkable, creating a unique and serene atmosphere. The beds are incredibly comfortable, making it tempting to stay in all day. The housekeeping team does a fabulous job maintaining the rooms, ensuring they are always pristine and welcoming. As for the food, it's some of the best we've had in LA. Breakfast is on par with the finest we've experienced, and the meals at Palma and through room service are consistently incredible. This is a really well run hotel. All the staff is very responsive to any needs or concerns. And it seems well run. I’m especially impressed with Felipe Reyes, who quickly solved a problem, and frequently checked on how I was doing, and Josh Samad who clearly cares about the guests. Both are excellent and deserve recognition.

This hotel is well located, offers great food and beverage and the staff was lovely! Anna in the front desk was extra helpful! The restaurants had outstanding service and food. The room was quiet and I had a great night sleep! Every morning I had a great breakfast and the staff were friendly and the service was super fast!
