The hotel

A luxury hotel in the heart of the city combining modern features with contemporary on-of-a-kind design, the Proper Hotel Santa Monica is a proper treat. The rooftop pool is the only one you’ll find in the area, so nab a sunbed or treat yourself to an alcove for the day for that added relaxation – no need to move, just have your drinks and food delivered to you, they’ll even supply the suncream, you’ll need it on those summer days. The hotel may not be situated on the coastal front, but it positions you in great proximity to bars and restaurants, and the local farmers market which is a must visit. You’ll feel more of a local in this hangout, a step away from the obvious tourist spots. When you do want to visit the beach (who wouldn’t?!), it’s only a short stroll away, or hop on an eLECTRA bike to get you there even quicker. Of course, Santa Monica has plenty of trendy restaurants to visit, but the hotel have got some fantastic offerings of their own, chill out in Palma when you need a break from the hot weather or a late night apertif. Or if you want to soak up those rays with a chilled drink in hand then Calabra offers fantastic poolside views, with a sushi menu available Thursday – Sunday for those sashimi lovers.

Calabra Rooftop (serving fresh Mediterranean and Californian cuisine, open for brunch, light bites, dinner, and drinks, with an additional Sushi menu available Thurs-Sun). Palma (Lobby lounge serving a casual food menu, and a wide selection of drinks throughout the day).

Proper Santa Monica is a collision of effortless simplicity in design, and the perfect level of hospitality. Every sense that we experience as human beings has been considered their team. From the moment you pull into to the valet, to the moment they bring your car up one last time, it is flawless service. The people looking after you are kind and more so, genuine. The materials and the mood is constantly changing with the effects of the natural light coming in through what seems like a sea of sheer curtains over enormous floor to ceiling glass. The food is curated and thoughtful. It is, in essence effortless perfection. The furniture is all just right for the spot being occupied. Despite my knowledge of design and hospitality, which reminds me of all of the work that has gone into making these experiences sensory bliss. Thank you, proper. The tattoo on my wrist of your brand is my daily reminder to pay attention to the details in my work, and to remind me that perfection is not only possible, but is alive and well in Santa Monica. The concierge was very helpful and knowledgeable…went above and beyond to get us a reservation at a popular spot. Overall, great food, beverages, and service with professional staff. Our family enjoyed the week long stay and will come back.

Despite having a small hiccup with an inadequate room offered at the beginning of our stay, the assistant GM Julio Galindo turned everything around for the better. The entire Proper Hotel Santa Monica team should be very proud of the level of hospitality they offer. I’m so grateful to Julio Galindo for promptly addressing our concerns about the inadequate room that was damaged. He notified the staff, took care of everything and checked in on us. He is the real deal in hospitality and the Proper Hotel Group is very lucky to have him. Cherish and Ryan also made us feel so taken care of. We come to the Proper for refuge from our busy medical practice down the street and this experience reminds us just how wonderful a refuge the Proper Santa Monica is. Read less
