The hotel

A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Shutters on the Beach is an award-winning establishment with a distinctly discerning clientele. Similar in style to a 1920s or 1930s beach resort, it is light, airy and luxurious with many works of art on show, including pictures by David Hockney and Robert Motherwell. Rooms and suites boast all the comforts of home and are very generous in size with great views of the ocean. Amenities include the gorgeous ONE Spa offering a wide range of signature treatments, including the Signature Facial with Augustinus Bader. There’s also a swimming pool to laze by and a well-equipped fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms. One Pico is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, showcasing a seasonally changing menu of modern American cuisine. If a more laid-back atmosphere appeals, however, beach-side cafe Coast more than fits the bill and is open from morning until night. For afternoon tea and evening cocktails, look no further than the lobby lounge, a cosy, intimate space that is popular with locals and guests alike.

We’ve been coming to shutters for years and it’s been great. Last year there was lots of repair works near our room starting very early and lasting for days. We put that down to a one off as we love the location and the view from the pool terrace. This year it’s awful. Our room is very noisy and we can hear things in the next room as well as the laundry. And the terrace is shut off on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for private events. Which means there is a shortage of room to lay out and enjoy the weather, if you find a place you’ll be disturbed as the events set up, and you won’t get to see the spectacular view of the ocean. One of great things about shutters is that it always feels quiet and you always feel like you’re important management. Now it just feels like they want to squeeze as much money out of their place as they can and to hang with the experience. So, why pay the premium price to stay here if it’s just like other hotels? The hotel location is the BEST!! right on the beach!!! The "boardwalk" is right out the back, and it was fun to walk it, get some steps in and see the sights. The Santa Monica Pier is very nearby. I can't say enough about this hotel and I can't wait to get back to it!! Read less

We've been faithful customers of Shutters for 25 years, and just when we thought it couldn't get any better, they raised the bar...again. The "new attitude" of personal connections and warm, welcoming behavior permeated every level and person at the property. They've elevated the experience to a new level. We were absolutely delighted. The staff's attentiveness and willingness to go the extra mile to make you happy is clearly evident. Combine that with the oceanfront location, magnificent property, and stellar onsite amenities, and you have the formula for a wonderful holiday. We love this property and always have such a wonderful time. Read less

At check-out the receptionist asked me how my stay had been. Without hesitating I said, perfect in every way. And it was. It had long been a dream of mine to stay at Shutters on the Beach & I decided to treat myself, figuring that if you’re doing it you *have* to do it right & be overlooking the ocean. I booked a partial ocean view room & then fretted endlessly about what that meant, would I have a balcony etc etc. After a couple of emails in advance requesting high floor, balcony, seeing at least some ocean, I arrived after an 11 hour transatlantic flight to find that they had accommodated me in every way. My room (730) was stunning & the sunset view as I checked in, sublime. During my 4 night stay I enjoyed every aspect of the hotel - from the wonderfully well appointed room, fabulous breakfast at Coast, lovely sundowners on the balcony of the Lounge bar, complimentary bike rental, to the amazingly friendly staff (special mention to Lisa at Coast, who was bubbly & helpful as I prevaricated over wine choices, & the effortlessly attentive & friendly Tim in the Lounge). I switched over to Casa del Mar one night for a drink & charcuterie platter at their bar - lovely but, for me, not a patch on the Cape Cod beachy vibes at Shutters. My only regret was that I had to leave. I am already planning my next trip. Read less
