Shutters on the Beach

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

Virgin rating

The hotel

A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Shutters on the Beach is an award-winning establishment with a distinctly discerning clientele. Similar in style to a 1920s or 1930s beach resort, it is light, airy and luxurious with many works of art on show, including pictures by David Hockney and Robert Motherwell. Rooms and suites boast all the comforts of home and are very generous in size with great views of the ocean. Amenities include the gorgeous ONE Spa offering a wide range of signature treatments, including the Signature Facial with Augustinus Bader. There’s also a swimming pool to laze by and a well-equipped fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms. One Pico is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, showcasing a seasonally changing menu of modern American cuisine. If a more laid-back atmosphere appeals, however, beach-side cafe Coast more than fits the bill and is open from morning until night. For afternoon tea and evening cocktails, look no further than the lobby lounge, a cosy, intimate space that is popular with locals and guests alike.

Jonathan and Bernardo were a great help, taking care of our transporation needs. The hostess at Coast along with Gio and Alex, provided amazing service. Housekeeping was the best, our rooms everyday were spotless, also turn down service was a nice treat. Thank You, for another amazing stay!!! Read less

We felt so relaxed from the moment we arrived. Everyone from the valet staff to the front desk made sure we felt welcome. The gentleman who brought us to our room gave us great tips to help us enjoy our experience. The staff at the pool and the restaurant were also very responsive. We greatly enjoyed laying by the pool, having breakfast near the beach and using the free bicycles to explore the area. On checkout day, we asked the desk a few questions about activities we were still considering in the area and they offered us late checkout without me even asking. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on our next trip to LA. Read less

We stayed here at the recommendation of a friend. It has the best location in Santa Monica and when we arrived it had a glamorous atmosphere. The service is also excellent, but staff are working for tips so it is not surprising. The rooms are small and everything is crammed together in one small space so it feels crowded and not at all relaxing. Worse, everything was so expensive. The rooms were about $1000 a day and it cost us $350 to rent a pool cabana that was just four square feet for the day. Again, there were too many people in the pool area so I did not feel any kind of luxury. The best part is the complimentary yoga on the beach every morning. Read less

I had been dreaming to stay in this hotel for years. When i arrived, what i saw was nothing of what i expected. A small and dirty hotel smelling like a pub. When i got to the room i was shocked to see that the partial sea view room i had booked had actually a parking view. When i complained to the reception the manager told me that if i wanted sea view i should have booked sea view and not partial sea view. So i went to booking.com to check what picture they had at partial sea view and i was shocked to see that the background is photoshopped and black so that you cannot see that you actually book a room with parking view and not partial sea view. The room though was very nice with very nice amenities and an amazing and comfortable bed. But still, everything in this hotel was very expensive. The hotels sun beds were not for free you had to pay around 100$ to sit to them and they would take them away at 4. The pool was nothing like i thought it be. It was dirty with no view. The food generally in the hotel was nothing special and overpriced. Very disappointed with managers behaviour as she didn’t seem to care to please the hotels guests and resolve the issues. Never going back. Read less

I share this to hopefully save another couple/family from disappointment. My husband and I booked Shutters in February for our honeymoon stay in July. We were so looking forward to the experience, believing (based on the price!) that it would be exceptional. The reality was in total opposition. Our room wasn't ready until well after the official check-in time, and the worst part was being told - by multiple people - different reasons for the lack of preparation. It was so clear we were being jerked around, and all we could do was stand around in the lobby (after a long day of travel) and wait for the hotel to deliver on our agreement. When we finally did get in a room, the WiFi wasn't working, when we were promised "advanced Hi-Speed Internet" for the $40 per day resort fee (on top of the exorbitant cost of a room that was shockingly small despite being billed as a "suite"). Oh, and the "partial ocean view" that was advertised? Sure, if you craned your neck out the window and looked past the parking lot and over another building, you could vaguely see the ocean. But it was awful. The room was bad, the Wi-Fi didn't work for half the trip (which is a bigger deal when you're coming from another country) and no matter how often we made inquiries on how to fix the problems we had (why was there no soap? why were our towels not replenished? why was housekeeping knocking on the door at 8:14 a.m. when we had the Do Not Disturb sign on?) we got no real answers. In the end, Shutters diminished our honeymoon experience by not delivering on the most basic things that you would expect from any hotel, let alone one that charges what they do and bills itself as "luxury." I would highly recommend searching out other options in Santa Monica; there are far better hotels and experiences to be had. Read less
