The experience was excellent from check in to departure. The hotel gym was smaller than I expected for a hotel as large as this one is. This hotel is well located for the river walk, shopping on Michigan Avenue or a boat tour on the Chicago River.

Stayed at the Fairmont Chicago this October. Overall it was a pleasant experience. The service was excellent. The valet and bell man were very pleasant, despite bringing a small city of luggage for my child. The front desk experience was also efficient. The Bellman even brought our child a small stuffed animal after he dropped off our bags. Our suite, was perfect for traveling with a small child with a table and small wet bar and a separate bedroom. The room was pretty clean and the decor was nice. However, there were clearly some improvements that could be made. We did notice exposed wiring in the bathroom. Dirty grout in the shower. The hotel bar/pub was a nice perk. It was slammed the time we went but, a nice place for drinks/appetizers. Overall, I would suggest this place. It’s not as luxurious as some of the other hotels in the area but service is great, as is the location. Read less

Overall a good experience. Just a slight complaint about the configuration of the room, where the door opens directly into the sleeping area, allowing passers by to see anyone sleeping in the bed. The two sitting chairs and the desk were well placed.

Myself and a group of friends stayed for a long weekend at the Fairmont in Gold level rooms. I'm not sure that the Gold lounge is really worth the extra money - breakfast was certainly the best perk, a few hot items and quite a few cold along with really terrific coffee, but the afternoon and evening offerings were pretty lacking (soggy empanadas and a small cheese board one night) and the wine and cocktail options offered in evening honor bar were extremely limited. All our rooms were comfortable and very well maintained though a refresh is probably in order, they look a bit dated. The hotel's location was, in my opinion, the best part of our stay. Everything on our agenda for the weekend: architectural cruise, a visit to the Chicago Institute of Art, Millennium park, a Garret's Popcorn, etc. was a 15 min walk or less. Read less

I stayed here for three nights while attending a conference. The Fairmont holds itself out as a luxury hotel but this was definitely not the case, this property was average at best. Pros: The bed and pillows in our standard king room were comfortable. When we made a request (such as asking for fresh towels, since there is no turn-down service) it was answered promptly. The location is convenient but not unique, there are numerous other hotels in the same area. Cons: My concerns began with check-in. We arrived an hour early and expected to check our bags and come back when the room was ready, as is commonplace. Instead of suggesting this, the man at the front desk said that he had no standard king rooms available and we could either have a double bed room or pay more for a deluxe king room (this was not a free upgrade). It was only after we pointed out that we would wait that we were told we could have the room we actually booked - then when we returned an hour later we had to repeat the entire check-in process even though we were working with the same person. All this isn't a big deal, but it also shouldn't happen in a place that promises a luxury hotel experience. When we got to the room, we found it wasn't really worth waiting for. The seating area was sparse and depressing (see photo) - one small chair, a tiny table and a floor lamp at the far end of the room. The TV was on a pull-out wall bracket so it could be angled either toward this single chair or toward the bed, but not both. This setup was awkward and uncomfortable with two people in the room and not enough places to sit. Even more uncomfortable was that the air conditioning in our room was almost nonexistent - we had to keep the temperature set at 60 with a continual fan in order to feel even a little bit of cool air, which didn't circulate at all but only blew right at that single chair. The Fairmont did respond quickly by sending maintenance when I asked about this, but there was nothing they could do to make the room cooler. The bathroom was adequate but nothing special, the lighting was dim and the fixtures/tub dated. It was clean overall, but the base tiles in the shower stall were stained black from mildew or something similar. There are plenty of comparably priced but much better hotels in Chicago, I wouldn't stay here again. Read less
