The hotel

Anyone wishing for a sophisticated and calming approach to accommodation in Chicago should look no further than the Royal Sonesta which rates guests' well-being and comfort levels just as seriously as the stylish interior décor. The hotel offers just that little bit extra with personalised in-room Yoga sessions on the TV or perhaps you would prefer an early morning jog? Of course, you don't have to jog to be able to enjoy the sights and guests staying at the Palomar will be pleased to learn that River North, Navy Pier and the Magnificent Mile are all within walking distance. Further fabulous fitness facilities come in the form of the hotel's indoor heated swimming pool and 24-hour gym which are both guaranteed to help you work up an appetite just in time to check out the gastro-lounge dishes at the Sable Kitchen & Bar. What with in-room dining options and complimentary wine tasting sessions every day at 5.00pm, it's a wonder that you'll find the time to set foot outside however, it would be rude not to so this is your chance to give the Windy City a whirl.

Lots of info was given at check-in, I wish it was all on a piece of paper or a QR code for future reference during my stay. Lots of info was given at check-in, I wish it was all on a piece of paper or a QR code for future reference during my stay. (I was tired from our four-hour drive, so I didn't absorb much of that info.) Noise travels through/under doors from the hallway, (some people are just loud in the hallways). Two free bottles of water in room, if you are a member of their hotel points/club. Hotel text requests (love that I could text vs talk to someone on the phone) were answered mostly promptly and items (two luggage racks) were delivered quickly. The hotel was not filled with many children. Heavy sliding barn door to the bathroom; I know my older mother would have a problem with it( although it worked fine for us.) On the 11th floor, we did hear street noise from loud cars and fire trucks. The fire department was about 1 1/2 blocks away, and heard a fire truck at least every other hour. (Granted, this is a large city, there are fire departments all over the place.) If you want to lessen this noise, I would suggest a higher floor and perhaps not facing Illinois Street. It felt like that was their street to head east and that was fire district. Cologne/Perfume smell when entering the lobby. Some may like this, but I did not - but granted any city can have an unpleasant smell, so maybe the hotel was trying to mask that smell in their hotel? It smelled like men's cologne and I'm not a fan of those types of scents. Luckily, it did not give me a headache. This hotel is near bus lines and the Red Line. The only issue I had with the hotel is when I asked how we could take a bus to the art museum, the front desk person had no idea. We eventually figured out the Chicago transit system on our own, but it would have been nice to have frequently visited spots and how to get there via public transit near the hotel. All she had to say, was go across the street, pick up bus XX heading east, get off at XX stop, and walk 2 blocks east. The hotel was very clean. The best part of this hotel was the ability to select and pay for early check-in and late check-out when reserving the hotel online at their website. Read less

Could not recommend the hotel more, the staff were really friendly and helpful with any queries. I proposed during the trip and the staff were great with giving recommendations of places to visit, setting up a room, and offering an upgrade for our stay! The location of the hotel was very convenient with a short walk to the river and tourist spots or a metro station right outside. Could not have asked for a more special place and trip, when visiting Chicago again will be staying here. Read less
