Checked in late April for a 4 night stay. The room was on an upper floor, high enough to see over the tops of some of the surrounding buildings with a very limited glimpse of the lake. The furnishings and interior space was first class, no complaints. Unfortunately they had discontinued the mini bar system and turned off the little refrigerator; so there were no drinks or snacks available in the room, and you had to take the elevator down to the lobby if you got hungry or thirsty in the middle of the night. That became an issue, because that's exactly what happened the first night there. If you actually do go downstairs looking for something to eat or drink, you will not be rewarded with a big selection because the downstairs food store has basically the limited choice of drink and snacks you might find in your actual mini bar, nothing more. The restaurant had a nice variety of menu items, and I would say we ate well. Prices were reasonable. The downstairs bar was quite lively and stocked with a better than average selection of liquor. The location is excellent, with plenty of shopping and dining options, cafes, and even the lake, all within the surrounding area, and in walking the neighborhood you are somewhat removed from the tourist hordes and might actually feel like a Chicagoan! I will make this short: We had booked a room with 2 beds for my adult daughter and myself, directly through the hotel website. After check in, which was ok, but not extraordinarily friendly, we took the elevator to our room, which we found to be not clean ( filth, dust and crumbs on the bedstand, also brown spots, probably coffee, coke). We asked for another ( clean ) room. The second room was also not clean, dirt in the same spots as the previous one, an M&M on the floor. We asked to change the room again, this was beginning to get uncomfortable for us. The manager offered us free cocktails at the bar, which we did not want, we simply wanted a clean room. The 3rd room was acceptable, although there was a hairband on the floor which was not from us. We decided to stay in this room, we showed the hairband to the manager downstairs, just to show her how poor her cleaning staff is and apparently how nobody checks the rooms. She again offered us not to charge the night. I told her this is not my intention, I don´t want any gifts, I simply expect professionalism and I expect to be taken serious as a hotel guest. My daughter and I went out for dinner, returned to the hotel and to the room and our key card would not open the room door. Puzzled, we went back down to the reception, ( I don`t know how many times we went up and down), in a snippy tone the lady apologized and said it must have been a misunderstanding, she deactivated our room key because supposedly I said we were checking out. I found this to be outrageous, our belongings were in the room, how can she just lock me out and not give me access to our things. We never said we were checking out. After that we did check out, it was not a good feeling to be in downtown Chicago at 10.30pm, 2 women with no hotel room. The lady was very unfriendly, we felt totally unwelcome, almost kicked out. I blame the highly unprofessional staff and it seems there is no responsible person who has a clue about hospitality. NEVER AGAIN P.s. I stayed in this Sofitel many years ago and it was very pleasant Read less

Maybe we got a “lemon” of a room. Or maybe they are still recovering from pandemic. But there was one thing after another wrong with the room, as if no one had stayed in it for 2 years (possible!). If I had been traveling on a high pressure business trip, I would have been really angry. Lock was broken, TV had to be replaced, closet light stayed on all night with no way to turn off, minibar missing, and room service food was poor quality. Read less

I made a TripAdvisor account for the first time just to leave this review because I am so extremely disappointed with how my recent stay at the Sofitel went. I suggested the Sofitel for the room block for the wedding of one my best friends - I have stayed in the Sofitel before in OTHER cities and assumed that the Sofitel in Chicago, listed as a 5-star hotel, would be of similar caliber. You know what they say about assumptions. It all started when we arrived at the Sofitel late on Thursday night from the airport to check in. Despite the fact that I made my reservation many months ago and had my confirmation email handy, the hotel inexplicably had no record of my reservation at all. While they were able to still fit me in because they had vacancies (phew!) not a great first sign. I then learned that this also happened to 2 other bridesmaids, which indicates to me that there's a good chance it happened to additional wedding guests as well that I didn't even hear about. The front desk staff also seemed to have NO idea about the welcome bags they were supposed to be handing out to guests checking in from the room block, despite the fact that they were immediately behind the front desk labeled with our names. When we got up to our room, our underwhelming night continued as we found that the door to the room was impossible to CLOSE without a room key (so you needed a key to leave the room as well). I did not bother reporting this to the staff because I was not impressed by their competence, so we just dealt with the irritating door for the weekend. I will note though that the bed was extremely comfortable (the 1 star in this review is for the bed!). Come Saturday it was time for the bridesmaids to get ready for the wedding. We had planned ahead and ordered breakfast and lunch catered to be delivered to the room. We also cleared with the hotel staff in advance that we would be having these meals delivered and they agreed to bring up the deliveries to the room when they arrived. We heard from the caterers that breakfast had been delivered to the hotel. 20 minutes later the food still had not been brought up to the suite, so I called down to the front desk to ask if they could bring it up. The person who picked up the phone told me that she had no idea whether our food had in fact been delivered since she was not at the front desk herself (despite the fact that she was the one who picked up the phone when I dialed the button labeled "front desk"...) and that it was against hotel policy for the staff to bring deliveries upstairs - not consistent with the agreement we had made with the hotel in advance, obviously. While irritating, this wasn't a huge problem and so I ran down quickly to get the food and bring it upstairs. Then came our lunch delivery - we waited and waited and waited for the lunch delivery to be brought upstairs to no avail. One of the other bridesmaids went downstairs and was told that while a food delivery had come earlier, they didn't know where it had gone and assumed somebody had taken it. They said they would REVIEW THE SECURITY FOOTAGE to locate our delivery. It showed up about an hour later to our suite with no explanation of where it might have gone in the meantime, which is a bit concerning from a food safety perspective. Obviously the meal issues threw some wrinkles into a very tight wedding day schedule, as did the valet service - while we were told to have all of our vendors use the valet, the wait to drop off cars at the valet ranged from 30-45 minutes. When we checked out on Sunday, the bride had been overcharged for parking and then, when the Sofitel attempted to correct the error, they instead charged her an ADDITIONAL $100. Another bridesmaid left luggage in the storage room after checking out while attending a post-wedding brunch and when she returned was given only half of her luggage by the porter. I think the real kicker though was that I had ordered shapewear for the wedding - it did not arrive in time and I assumed the problem was with the shapewear company's delivery schedule. However, about 20 minutes before I checked out, I received a call from the front desk that they had my shapewear package but that they had accidentally delivered it to somebody else's room and so the package of shapewear was opened - pretty unappealing for undergarments. They generously gave me my open package. This is a non-exhaustive list but I hope that this information is helpful to you if you are considering hosting a wedding or other large event in the neighborhood. Read less
