This was my first time staying a hotel post-COVID, so I was a little apprehensive about it. However, immediately upon walking in to the Sofitel I was impressed with the measures they'd taken, from glass partitions at the check-in desk to sanitizing wipe dispensers. The common areas are also beautiful, with a luxe look deserving of the price and hotel class. The woman who checked me in was very welcoming, as were the other staff I encountered during my stay. My room looked great at first glance as well, with upscale finishes and a comfortable bed. But as I started to get settled and take a closer look around, some alarm bells began to go off in my head. I noticed black hairs on almost every surface of the room. From the desk to the bathtub, there was hair everywhere. I'm a blonde, so they were definitely not mine. Ordinarily this would be a little gross but not a huge deal, however, it concerned me that in this post-COVID climate, the room was clearly not being cleaned as thoroughly as it should be. I also noticed crumbs on various surfaces including the carpet, and a hairball by the shower. Sofitel did let me know upon check in that there would be no housekeeping service during my stay, but I'd expect it to be done before my stay obviously. I'm not sure if they are cutting corners to avoid lingering in rooms, but it's noticeable and even less acceptable than it normally would be. I was on guard all night constantly sanitizing and scared to touch anything because of this, so my stay was not as relaxing as I would have liked it to be. Perhaps I'll try the Sofitel again eventually, but I do not think I could recommend it in these times when we need to be hyper-vigilant about cleaning. Read less

I travel a lot and rely on TripAdvisor, so I will try to provide the info that I look for in a review, Judging a hotel during COVID is difficult as these are strange times and things are in flux. That said, we stayed for 5 days (booked through Accor website). The Accor program only gives you credit when you book directly through them which is pretty unusual and a little stupid, so while I have stayed in many Sofitels and Fairmonts, it doesn't show on my account. Check-in was a bit of a cluster. Had emailed the week before to confirm (as the hotel that I had originally booked- the Langham- cancelled and delayed opening until July). Gave my arrival time and requested a high floor. Called the day before to again confirm and was told we were all set. Arrived on time (3PM) and was told that we would be on the 7th floor. If we wanted the higher floor, it would be another 2 hours. We decided to wait though surprised as I had spoken with them the day before. Hotel design is nice, lobby is nice and very clean with wipes and hand sanitizer readily available. The very limited staff all wore masks. No one to open doors or help with luggage (we didn't need it but other people were struggling). Room (prestige corner suite) was large, nicely appointed, had great views and was comfortable. The bed is extremely comfortable (though a little too hot for me as it has a feather bed). Linens and pillows terrific. Nespresso coffee machine in room. The water pressure in the shower was very poor, and the air conditioning in the bedroom was very temperamental and would randomly shut off in the middle of the night. No smart TV to stream Netflix or Hulu. Hotel is dog friendly. The gym was open and clean and had good equipment though is in a room with no natural light ( big hotel, should allocate different space). No pool. Due to COVID, there was no housekeeping during the stay ( OK with this). Unfortunately, Sofitel does not have a messaging system on the app like many other hotels, so had to call down (and often be put on hold for long periods) to request towels, empty trash, soap, etc. They should update this system. There was no food on premises at all on our 1st day. On the second day, they opened the patio, but strangely only for drinks and light food in the late afternoon and evening, not for breakfast or lunch for guests, and still no room service. The hotel did provide a list of area restaurants serving food. On our 1st two days, there was only ever 1 person a the desk who was answering calls and dealing with guests. They informed us that they were busier than they expected. On subsequent days, there were sometimes 2 people at the desk but they usually looked very busy. The desk personnel were fine, but were not particularly friendly and often did not acknowledge us and never greet us by name (even though we were there for 5 days) as one would normally expect at a 5 star hotel like Four Seasons, Langham, etc. Juan, who ran the outdoor patio was the only exception. He was always very friendly and pleasant and seemed to interact well with all of the guests. The rate we paid was really good, and the room was great, but seems that Sofitel is trying to maximize profit (or more accurately, minimize losses) by having the hotel open but understaffed and providing very little service, not all of which is due to local ordinances due to COVID. The location in Chicago's Gold Coast is an ideal one for seeing the city. I would say Sofitel needs to update their app and messaging system, update their TVs and provide more personable and personalized service before they could be considered a 5 star hotel (and these things are not due to COVID). This week, I stayed at Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile, and we experienced excellent customer service. I would like to commend Kyle Jackson, Director of Rooms, for his excellent customer service and attention to detail. My stay was during the week of June 12-17, 2020, immediately after the hotel's re-opening due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During these especially difficult times, Kyle came through like a champ! Due to the pandemic, we had to order food to-go from local restaurants. Therefore, we needed a microwave oven, refrigerator, cutlery and plates and needed plates and cutlery. We presented our requests to Kyle, and he promptly arranged to have everything delivered to our room. Each time we needed towels or the trash taken out, or the room cleaned, Kyle again responded promptly. His customer service was superb! The next time I'm in the Chicago Magnificent Mile area, I will absolutely stay at Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile, and I recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Great hotel, but now we won’t be going to Chicago before 2022

Sofitel has wonderful employees, and we are sorry for their loss of wages recently. Chicago’s inability to manage its police force, finances and criminals means we aren’t coming. Hopefully, the city of Chicago can become safe and enjoyable again someday.

The location and decoration are very good, very safe to get around even at night time, also convenient for dining and shopping. Service is excellent! One of the newest hotels in downtown Chicago. Breakfast is not bad
