When our spring break plans had to be cancelled, we booked a weekend at the River Inn. It was a dream stress-free getaway. Karl Friedrich, the General Manager, seemed to be around every corner. Each detail was impeccable. Cheerful front desk, attractive tiled stairway for when we wanted to skip the elevator, fire in lobby, roses everywhere. We booked a dinner at Paulette’s & it was divine, with a river view. We had appetizers upstairs at the Terrace with another stunning river view. Even breakfast (included for 2) had a river view! The room and bath were luscious. Living room with working has fireplace. Truly, we wanted to move in. Housekeeping was lovely and accommodating to our schedule and needs. Chocolates and port wine surprised us at turndown. After a weekend at The River Inn, my husband & I were recharged & refreshed. Could not have improved upon our experience. Weather was dreary and cloudy and we still had a great time. Neighborhood is very walkable & a manicure/pedicure was down the street. Massage shop was a couple of doors down & a gourmet grocery on the corner. Beautiful & fun! Read less

River Inn of Harbor Town was such a pleasant surprise in Memphis, TN. Instead of staying at The Peabody in downtown Memphis recommended by a few friends who have family in the city, I've chosen to stay in the River Inn of Harbor Town on Mud Island, five to 10 minutes by car from the busy Beale Street. I chose this boutique hotel with only 28 rooms housed in two different buildings because it's won the Conde Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Award as the number-one hotel of the South. From my research, I also liked the fact that Harbor Town is a safe, upscale new urbanist-style residential neighbourhood with younger, more affluent Memphians. From reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, I also liked the numerous positive reports of the hotel's geographical position facing the Mississippi River. My four-night stay at this tiny jewel hotel in the little oasis just outside the main business district downtown was such a delight! Voted by USA Today's 10Best.com as one of the 10 best places to travel to in the U.S., Harbor Town itself is a charming destination with joggers, dog walkers, and river watchers along the trails of the Mississippi River just across the street from the hotel I picked a room with a river view and was already charmed by the first night of sunset along the river banks. The hotel is enchanting with its old-world charm - a lobby with a fireplace, a vintage-style crystal chandelier, and hard-wood floors with rugs and paintings of trees along the river banks. I particularly liked the welcome champagne/wine hospitality and the roll-down service every night with a glass of port and chocolate truffle. Because it's a boutique hotel, there were only a few staff members who were all very friendly and helpful and I can remember them all by names. I would particularly like to thank Front Desk Manager Amy Nguyen who went above and beyond to make sure that my Lyft rides to and from Beale Street were safe. She offered me her cell phone number and asked me to share my route (a security measure on the Lyft app) with her even though she's already resting at home after her shift. She also texted me to make sure that I got back to the hotel safely. I did the same thing with her when I checked out and left for the airport. My standard Queen room was small but charming with a four-poster bed and a river view. The closet was big enough with a lot of hangars for my clothes for the four days. The shower pressure in the bath tub was strong with quality toiletries from Gilchrist and Soames from London, U.K. I usually like a kettle in my room for drinking hot water in the morning before breakfast and the hotel staff went above and beyond to get me one the first morning when I was there. The bathroom tiles and walls looked a bit tired and probably need a facelift of some sort. I would also have preferred the room floors to be wooden instead of carpets. But overall, I thought the room rate including breakfast was good value for money. I also liked the library-style sitting area on each floor with early morning coffee. There were fresh flowers and beautiful artwork everywhere in the hotel. The free wi-fi also worked extremely well. The biggest competitive advantage of the hotel is the trail along the Mississippi River where you could walk, run and be in unison with nature. I did that the first evening when I checked-in and took a few photos of the lovely sunset scene. I also went up to the top floor and took a look at the much-acclaimed rooftop terrace which was covered during the winter months. It was disappointing because it looked small, crowded and noisy and not much of a scenery with a covered rooftop. The only reason why I didn't rate this property five stars is because of the quality of the staff at the Paulette Restaurant where hotel guests would have breakfast, lunch and dinner. I tried all three meals throughout my stay and the quality of the food was not bad. I was also pleasantly surprised that they have my favourite California white wine Conundrum on their wine list. But it's the serving and wait staff who would need better standards of hospitality training. They were not rude, but lacked authentic warmth and hospitality, discretion and sophistication. I had dinner one evening at The Peabody's Capriccio Grill and immediately noticed the difference in the quality of the service when compared to Paulette. All in all, while the hotel location is not in the downtown hub, I never felt inconvenient because ride-hailing cars would take you door to door anywhere in five to ten minutes. I would highly recommend this boutique hotel to any visitor to Memphis whether it's for business or pleasure. It's a gem away from the madding crowd and I would definitely stay there again when I return to Memphis. Read less
