Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

Located on the grounds where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this is a stunning hotel, contemporary in feel with top notch amenities. Overlooking one of the best snorkelling bays in Hawaii, it’s a must for water sports fans as well as those who simply enjoy a beautiful beach to lie on. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance but there’s plenty to keep you entertained on-site. During high season, the Island Breeze Lu’au is one of the Big Island’s most popular events. As well as a sumptuous Hawaiian buffet to feast on, with dishes cooked in a traditional underground oven, dramatic Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment ensures an unforgettable evening for all. Before the feasting and dancing even begins, outrigger canoes carrying the royal court glide past the ancient Hawaiian temple on the seaward border of the hotel, an incredible spectacle you’ll want to capture on camera! Honu’s Restaurant is also a treat, overlooking the beachfront and complete with firepits so you can linger long after the sun has set. For more casual fare, Billfish Bar serves dishes such as calamari ‘fritte’ and seafood cobb salad as well as signature cocktails. To work off all that delicious food, there’s a recently opened tennis centre with two championship hard courts as well as hiking and biking through glorious state parks.

There were two beds with two lamps so there was a lamp beside each bed. There was also a mini fridge. The hotel contains several shops on the bottom floor as well as an ABC store. There are fabulous Hawaii-related decorations on the ground floor. I was particularly captivated by the giant swordfish, with attached remora, in the lobby. The hotel has a restaurant, and we ate breakfast there one morning. The restaurant also catered our final buffet dinner, and it provided the best food of any of the buffet dinners we had on the trip. The hotel also provided courtesy rooms for those of us leaving the island late in the day. These were much appreciated. Read less

This was the first time to the big island and this hotel/resort was nice. We ended up with an ocean view room we weren’t expecting. The breakfast buffet was great. I have many positive comments about this hotel-great location- clean room and several impressive staff members including the cabana service (a real bargain). I visited the concierge looking for an activity on the water. When I mentioned that I thought the weather was nice for a boat trip , the Concierge laughed and said “I think it’s so funny when you people come here and check the weather “. I asked him who you people are. He said “oh, you know “ No. I don’t. (I live on Oahu. And work in the maritime industry, checking weather is kinda my job). I said, oh, do you mean tourists? “Yes.” “Ok. I guess I’m a tourist on the big island, I live on Oahu. “ “Oh, so you know what I mean. “ “Not really. “ But I would like to go for a boat trip so I continue the conversation. I ask him about a trip. He recommends a boat, I ask if they have a Kama aina discount. He says yes, but I have to call myself. Then he asks me if I know what Kama aina means, without pausing for my answer, he condescendingly explains the meaning to me. I smile and wish him a good day, go to my room and call the boat. They have booked the last spot on the trip 2 minutes prior and tell me they would have been happy for the Concierge to have called to make my reservation. On checking out of the Marriott, I sent this information to the hotel and received a bland email saying thank you for the information. I wrote back asking for a response to the behavior of the employee and was told a follow up would take 5 days. It seems that the hotel is fine with guests being openly laughed at and condescended to. Unacceptable treatment of guests. My rating is due to the lack of appropriate management response to the treatment I received from the Concierge at this hotel. Read less
