The hotel

Located on the grounds where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this is a stunning hotel, contemporary in feel with top notch amenities. Overlooking one of the best snorkelling bays in Hawaii, it’s a must for water sports fans as well as those who simply enjoy a beautiful beach to lie on. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance but there’s plenty to keep you entertained on-site. During high season, the Island Breeze Lu’au is one of the Big Island’s most popular events. As well as a sumptuous Hawaiian buffet to feast on, with dishes cooked in a traditional underground oven, dramatic Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment ensures an unforgettable evening for all. Before the feasting and dancing even begins, outrigger canoes carrying the royal court glide past the ancient Hawaiian temple on the seaward border of the hotel, an incredible spectacle you’ll want to capture on camera! Honu’s Restaurant is also a treat, overlooking the beachfront and complete with firepits so you can linger long after the sun has set. For more casual fare, Billfish Bar serves dishes such as calamari ‘fritte’ and seafood cobb salad as well as signature cocktails. To work off all that delicious food, there’s a recently opened tennis centre with two championship hard courts as well as hiking and biking through glorious state parks.

My husband and I stayed here for the first four nights of our Hawaii trip, to acclimatise after our long journey from Ireland. It was hubby’s birthday and I had requested a quiet high floor ocean room in the West Tower. Imagine our disappointment when we were allocated 301 in the East Tower, one of the lowest, noisiest, minimal sea-view rooms in the hotel, next to the road! I went back down to reception and Devin could not have been more helpful. While he didn’t have a different room available for that night he promptly got us moved to 654 (top floor in the West Tower) the next morning. From that moment, our holiday started for real and we enjoyed our stay at the King Kam. Our view was fabulous and we even got to enjoy the hotel’s luau from our balcony! The room had all mod cons, including dual sinks (always much appreciated to avoid minor fist fights with my husband!) The buffet breakfast was excellent and included in our price which made the hotel quite a good deal. We liked the small beach area and always managed to secure some beach chairs and an umbrella. The hotel might want to rethink charging $150 for the cabanas as during our stay, we never saw a single one occupied so they are really a waste of space at that price. We had quite a good massage at the spa although we felt that it was significantly overpriced. The therapists were lovely girls; the spa manager, on the other hand, was in urgent need of a personality transplant – he completely lacked people skills and couldn’t have been more disinterested. The hotel’s artwork is very interesting, the ABC store and car rental agency on site very handy and the hotel’s location close to some excellent restaurants (Fish Hopper almost next door being one of the best) and shops also makes it a good choice (although we were dismayed to discover that almost all shops in Kona shut by 6pm. depriving us of one of our favourite past-times of doing a bit of arts and crafts shopping after dinner which we so enjoy when we holiday in the Mediterranean or Asia). Given that Hawaiian prices for food and accommodation are crazy by European standards, the King Kam is a well located and reasonable choice, especially if you have breakfast included in the price. Excellent service from Tichelle at the Billfish, limited menu but good. Thought the room was overpriced but compared to the other area hotels, it was a deal. Enjoyed my stay. Henry (bellhop/valet) rocked. He had the best attitude and was a huge help daily. Mahalo Henry! Angi, our pm housekeeping person was an angel. After a long day sightseeing, she was available and responded quickly with our requests. Many Kudos Angi. The Front Desk folks were courteous and helpful. Restaurants close by 9pm. Buffet available and Lava Flow cocktail - refreshing. Check-out a breeze. Read less

We booked a package through Costco Travel that included this hotel, with airfare and rental car quite some time ago. Just before leaving, I got online to read more about the hotel, and I was dismayed to see some negative reviews on TripAdvisor. My husband reminded me that we had such a full itinerary that the only thing we really needed was a good bed to sleep in, and the views were not so important since we could just walk to the beach. We needn't have worried at all; the room was great. The check in person did let us know that the room was advertised as ocean view, but because of the way the buildings sit, the view is at an angle, so it can be misleading. Our room was on the top floor at the far end, but we could see a good portion of the ocean and beach when we sat at the end of our balcony and turned our chairs to the side. We didn't do this much since we were always on the go, and when we were at the hotel in early evening, we strolled around the grounds, beach and nearby walkways. It was lovely. The staff were all quite friendly and helpful, especially the ladies at the front desk. We had no problems with the fact that there were no cleaning services daily, I think that is an outdated service that should have been done away with long ago, using too many resources and energy. We had a lovely balcony with a wonderful breeze that easily dried our towels if they needed it. The room was clean and spacious, and included a small fridge and coffee maker. My only suggestion would be to have more hooks or racks to hang towels on, but there were several hangars with clips in the closet, which we clipped a towel or two to and let them dry, which seemed to work just fine, and when it didn't, we hung them on the balcony for a short while. This hotel offers some very nice choices to travelers. First of all so much of downtown. Kona is walkable and near by.. The summer palace of the last queen and the oldest Christian church are a shot stroll. For foodies there are at least a dozen restaurants close to this hotel. They have some interesting art work about the history of the royal family in their main room as well as a model of an outrigger. The local beach is right outside as well as a replica of Hawaiian culture that is walkable . At least 3 nights they. have a "paid luau show". featuring local dancers. Be sure to try the coffee and the shaved iced located indoors. The pool is inviting. Read less

A recent 5 night stay in Kona was an absolute success in large part due to the staff at this wonderful little Courtyard. Even though there were a few issues; they were handled with great care by the staff. I had the opportunity to interact with Vicky who promptly repaired an A/C that struggled to do much of anything. The room was perfectly cool afterwards. A significant snafu which caused my travel companion to be delayed 48 hours and forced some creative maneuvering was made easy by the help I got from Missy at the Front Desk and particularly DeAndrea; the manager. Without too much detail, I'll just say that these two individuals went out of their way to help alleviate the above-mentioned travel situation and helped make it a fabulous stay after all. So lets talk about the property. The pool was spacious with plenty of seating, but like most resorts, If you show up at 12 noon, you likely wont find any chairs available. The small but spacious white sand beach area was quite nice, but same deal with the available beach chairs. Come early or you'll end up sitting on your towel in the sand. The tropical gardens adjoining the pool and beach were well kept, and the Pool-side thatched Roof Beach bar was a pleasant surprise. Well beyond what you would normally expect to find at a "mere" Courtyard. The location was perfect, just a short walk away from all of the Restaurants, Bars, Shops and Cafes. And when in Kona; you gotta' drink the coffee. Just a great spot that I will definitely return to. Thanks Courtyard Staff. Read less
