Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

Located on the grounds where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this is a stunning hotel, contemporary in feel with top notch amenities. Overlooking one of the best snorkelling bays in Hawaii, it’s a must for water sports fans as well as those who simply enjoy a beautiful beach to lie on. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance but there’s plenty to keep you entertained on-site. During high season, the Island Breeze Lu’au is one of the Big Island’s most popular events. As well as a sumptuous Hawaiian buffet to feast on, with dishes cooked in a traditional underground oven, dramatic Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment ensures an unforgettable evening for all. Before the feasting and dancing even begins, outrigger canoes carrying the royal court glide past the ancient Hawaiian temple on the seaward border of the hotel, an incredible spectacle you’ll want to capture on camera! Honu’s Restaurant is also a treat, overlooking the beachfront and complete with firepits so you can linger long after the sun has set. For more casual fare, Billfish Bar serves dishes such as calamari ‘fritte’ and seafood cobb salad as well as signature cocktails. To work off all that delicious food, there’s a recently opened tennis centre with two championship hard courts as well as hiking and biking through glorious state parks.

Enjoyed our stay here. With our Bonvoy status, we were upgraded to a corner room at the West Tower with oceanfront views. The West Tower is definitely where you want to stay. We spent one night at the East Tower prior to moving to the WT as the oceanfront room was not available for the rest of our stay until the next day. The East Tower looks run down. Recently, Marriott instituted a resort fee. Since our reservation was made prior to this fee being implemented, it was graciously waived for us. The hotel is walking distance to many highly rated restaurants and shopping. There’s even a farmers market where we bought fresh fruits. An ABC Store is on property. There is also a pier nearby where we got to see dolphins one afternoon. Elizabeth at the front desk, who checked us in, was very friendly and accommodating. She showed us an area map and made recommendations for things to do. The valet guys are very nice. There’s also fruit infused water at the lobby. Parking, pool and the gym are nice amenities. Our room was very clean and well appointed. Overall, it was a very nice stay. Read less

I chose this a I know someone who works for Marriott. Good spot, good rates and they agreed that I could have my room until 6pm as my flight was late. I even confirmed this on check-in. They then changed their minds and blamed it on sales and did this on my last day, a few hours before needing to be out of my room, totally ruining my plans for my final day in Hawaii on my birthday. The hotel itself is dated, good location but feels like a corny hotel from the 70s. The reception manager (female) was rude to me today and shrugged despite me showing her my emails confirming my late check-out. Read less

Great location with both a small beach (calm water) and a big pool. Nice and clean room with a small balcony for 2 people. Remember to add both the resort fee and parking fee (2 times $25) when you look for the total amount for staying at the hotel.

i wish i can give negative stars. I am in the second day of a 5 day stay, and i have already decided that if i come back to the island i will do airbnb or some other booking that will allow me to know exactly how my room is. I am aware the hotels exaggerate their amenities, but by partial ocean view this hotel means “Gaze upon spectacular views of Kailua Bay from your hotel room's private balcony”. translation is that there is nothing you can see from the room, but if you stand of the balcony and lean you will be able to see the ocean. Actually this is not even the worst thing: the fact that the Ac machine is next to where we are and that is old and loud means that you will hear that night and day, even with the door closed. The balconies are essential useless because it is hot and the view is essentially parking lot, plus the noise from AC, you would never sit there. This hotel charges 22 resort fee for essentially 2 bottles of water every day (parking is 25 extra) and internet. internet is already free for marriott members, so i am not seeing how this is an amenity. As other reviewers have pointed out the rooms are old, smelly, and the common areas are even worse smelling ( my husband called it “urine” smell; it is probably just old musty and dust). You will probably not be comfortable sitting in these common areas if such a smell bothers you. The pool is minuscule and children are allowed to essentially be here without adult supervision (the mom showed up 2 hours after the 3 kids next to me) or any kind of hotel supervision. Same for the beach, where you can get 2 chairs (also included in the resort fee). I am not sure how it will be in high season, but i cannot see how this beach can hold more than 40 pple or so. The room is smallish, but that is not the biggest deal; there is almost no room between the bed and the balcony door. Also the mattress is too soft and sags in the middle. At the same time the pillow is hard: so both my neck and back hurt. Usually i think the hotels have better mattresses than i have at home; in the past i have tried to find out the brand so I can buy it myself, but not here. The warm water takes for ever (first day i thought that was none) so it seems the plumbing gas some issues as well. i saw many hotels that are nearby and closer to the beach. If you want to see (or hear) the ocean do not waste your money here. I think this hotel is overpriced for what it offers, even after taking into account that is located in Hawai’ i (so there is more exaggeration). Read less

Room was smelling from somebody smoking in room, they send housekeeping to check and that was it. Wifi not working unless you upgrade for 4.95 a day plus tax. Parking went up twice within a few month to 25 bucks a night plus. Used to stay here for 15 years but this is my last time. Luckily there are plenty of other choices. You get nickeled and dimed here. This is still a 3 star property with no upgrades in years. I can go on and on but it is not worth it. Read less
