Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

Located on the grounds where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this is a stunning hotel, contemporary in feel with top notch amenities. Overlooking one of the best snorkelling bays in Hawaii, it’s a must for water sports fans as well as those who simply enjoy a beautiful beach to lie on. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance but there’s plenty to keep you entertained on-site. During high season, the Island Breeze Lu’au is one of the Big Island’s most popular events. As well as a sumptuous Hawaiian buffet to feast on, with dishes cooked in a traditional underground oven, dramatic Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment ensures an unforgettable evening for all. Before the feasting and dancing even begins, outrigger canoes carrying the royal court glide past the ancient Hawaiian temple on the seaward border of the hotel, an incredible spectacle you’ll want to capture on camera! Honu’s Restaurant is also a treat, overlooking the beachfront and complete with firepits so you can linger long after the sun has set. For more casual fare, Billfish Bar serves dishes such as calamari ‘fritte’ and seafood cobb salad as well as signature cocktails. To work off all that delicious food, there’s a recently opened tennis centre with two championship hard courts as well as hiking and biking through glorious state parks.

The check in process was quick, the staff were helpful, and it was about what you would expect for a Courtyard Marriott. The hotel was older, and there are a very limited number of ocean view rooms. The partial view (which we had) overlooked the roof, a sliver of the ocean, and the pool. For the price, the location alone was worth it.

We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel for several nights in early January 2020 during our trip to the Big Island. PRO's: The hotel is very well located for many activites-shopping, restaurants, Kona Bay pier, etc. Further, the staff was very accommodating and friendly. They tried very hard to please us and asked us what they could do to make our visit great. CON's. The hotel is old. We needed an ADA compliant room and they initially gave us a partial ocean view ADA room in the west building that had not been updated. The bathroom area had paint chips and most of the grout in the shower area was missing. Furniture was tired. The next morning we showed the staff photos of our bathroom area and they acknowledged the problem with an offer to move us to a renovated ADA room in the east wing. The room was much nicer and though it lacked an ocean view, we moved. The staff advised us before we moved that the room backed onto the elevator shaft and that you could hear the elevators vibrating in the shaft from this room. Apparently several of their ADA rooms on the east wing back onto the elevator shaft. It didn't keep us from sleeping and the staff clearly advised us of the issue before we changed rooms. We still preferred the new room to the older room. However, you should be aware of this issue if you need an ADA room. Our rating reflects a combined excellent for location and service but a much lower rating for the quality of the rooms. Read less

Enjoyed every moment of our stay and we would like to mention one particular employee for taking good care of us with such “Aloha”! Her name is Tixhelle Meno! She welcomed us in such a friendly way and took care of our needs at the pool and at the onsight restaurant Honu’s. We’ve been coming to Kona for over 20 years and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here...thanks to Tichelle! We’ll be back for sure! ❤️ Read less

This is a great Courtyard Marriott. Rooms seem renovated and were very clean. This is in perfect location to walk into heart of Kona for meals/shopping. Easy access to main roads to explore Island. Staff was friendly, pool was nice and they even had a little beach. I really enjoyed the stay.
