Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

Located on the grounds where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this is a stunning hotel, contemporary in feel with top notch amenities. Overlooking one of the best snorkelling bays in Hawaii, it’s a must for water sports fans as well as those who simply enjoy a beautiful beach to lie on. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance but there’s plenty to keep you entertained on-site. During high season, the Island Breeze Lu’au is one of the Big Island’s most popular events. As well as a sumptuous Hawaiian buffet to feast on, with dishes cooked in a traditional underground oven, dramatic Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment ensures an unforgettable evening for all. Before the feasting and dancing even begins, outrigger canoes carrying the royal court glide past the ancient Hawaiian temple on the seaward border of the hotel, an incredible spectacle you’ll want to capture on camera! Honu’s Restaurant is also a treat, overlooking the beachfront and complete with firepits so you can linger long after the sun has set. For more casual fare, Billfish Bar serves dishes such as calamari ‘fritte’ and seafood cobb salad as well as signature cocktails. To work off all that delicious food, there’s a recently opened tennis centre with two championship hard courts as well as hiking and biking through glorious state parks.

Specifically booked this hotel after outstanding experience from spring 2019, found many changes some welcome such as the remodels, other not so much, the resort fee is as described by a member of management as a "hotel tax" to another guest-- I hope the IRS is aware of this. This "hotel tax" includes options that are not available either due to minimal staffing or things I have no interest in. Either way you gotta pay. Frankly when I reviewed some recent folios I have only paid this level of resort fees for those hotels that had movie theater's and bowling alleys, this place had neither. I hope they re-think this as the hotel has so many positive things going for it to downgrade its vibe and overall great points to the level of that other mediocre lodging chains is just sad and frankly made an upgrade to Mauna Kea up the road a great option with zero resort fees and so much more available. Lastly during the rapid changes of Covid it was difficult to find a healthy meal, only bar food was available one evening, portions were small and if you aren't a drinker you come away disappointed. Hope with your new face-lift you start to compete on your positives and not just how much you can drill from your guests with add-on's and useless mandatory resort fees for nothing. Read less

The room was very clean and functional. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. We loved the location for the proximity to restaurants in the village. There is a small beach for snorkeling and swimming and it was fun to rent the kayaks and go out into the bay.

Here for business. Stayed in one of "non renovated" rooms. I need access to multiple outlets, room had a few, some outlets so loose they did not work. Has a/c but no heat. Kicker was first night emergency alarm went off. about 2:30am. Thrown out of bed, went downstairs via stairs to find out "sorry false alarm". I'm a strong believer in… Read more

Kicker was first night emergency alarm went off. about 2:30am. Thrown out of bed, went downstairs via stairs to find out "sorry false alarm". I'm a strong believer in customer service, especially when I paying for it. So, I'm paying over $250/night for rest, I'm here on business not pleasure, and I need my sleep. I think an apology would be the minimum but nothing. Crickets.....You would think with the covid 19 crisis they would bend over backwards to please/keep customers. I get the feeling (especially with the $22/day "resort fee", $25/day self parking fee) the smiles and aloha is there as long as you pay for it. Read less

We stayed at the King Kam for 2 weeks in February 2020. The location is great if you don't have a vehicle as you can walk down Ali'i Drive to many restaurants, pubs and stores. King Kam has a small public beach right in front of the hotel. The water is calm and shallow, so good for families with young children. This is our first visit in 5 years and things have changed. The gardens are neglected now, there are not nearly the plants and flowers there used to be. There is a new mandatory $22US per day charge that has very questionable value. You get ONE welcome drink period. NOT a drink per day. You get the use of the beach chairs (Tommy Bahama) Which you could buy at Costco for a one time price of $36. (cheaper than $22/day) They now have a lame game area that I didn't see anybody using. Shuffleboard, horse shoes, darts, table tennis, this is supposedly part of why we are now paying $22/day on top of the room charges. This does NOT include any parking or anything else. Our trip was paid in full before leaving home...but this was an extra cost added on at the resort. On top of this we were getting random charges on our credit card daily from the hotel. $194, $97, $126. We inquired what this was for as we had not charged anything to our room. We had not even used the TV or Phone. Nothing. They told us it was a "hold" in case we charged something to our room, which is also bogus, as they have our credit card number obviously, it's not like we could check out and avoid any charges. The hotel is in the middle of renovations, finally. So some rooms have been changed from the 80s browns and golds to a new turquoise oceana theme. We were offered an upgrade to a newly renovated room...for a price...no thanks. The maid service was good, the hotel is kept clean. There is ample hotel parking in a paid lot beside the hotel. This is also extra per day. Drinks at the poolside bar were $12 for a cocktail. so we chose to buy our alcohol at the onsite ABC store (a Hawaiian 7-11 type store) We got one litre bottles of Smirnoff Ice for $3.16 each. Wednesdays there was live entertainment near the poolside bar. It was nice. 3 nights a week there is a Luau on the hotel grounds. If you haven't been to a Luau before I recommend it. Its good entertainment. We had been on our previous trip in 2015 so opted out this time. It's about $140/person for food and show. You can hear & see the show easily, but from a distance, from the beach or government dock right beside the hotel, which a few people do. Another new thing the King Kam now has are Cabanas at the back of the beach and lawn area, you can rent for $78US/day. Basically a bed with a cover over it. You can get bar service brought to you there and if you spend more than $75 on drinks and snacks the price of the cabana is waived. Very few people were using these. The hotel has a nice looking gym that was never very busy. There are coin laundry machines on the main floor of the hotel for guests to use. Menehune coffee also on the hotel main floor is excellent Kona Coffee. There is no airport shuttle offered from this hotel. Its a $22 UBER ride. Or a $30 taxi ride. We got a new sim card for $30 days so we could use the Uber app on my phone. (we had chose not to rent a car this time to save $1800) We walked and took UBER, or a couple of cab rides. There is a car rental agency by the concierge desk on the main floor of the hotel if you just wanted to rent a car for a day or 2. But I really recommend not renting for your full vacation unless you plan to drive about everyday. We enjoyed our stay and relaxed on the beach but were just ticked off at some of the new pricing and changes. Read less
