Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

Located on the grounds where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this is a stunning hotel, contemporary in feel with top notch amenities. Overlooking one of the best snorkelling bays in Hawaii, it’s a must for water sports fans as well as those who simply enjoy a beautiful beach to lie on. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance but there’s plenty to keep you entertained on-site. During high season, the Island Breeze Lu’au is one of the Big Island’s most popular events. As well as a sumptuous Hawaiian buffet to feast on, with dishes cooked in a traditional underground oven, dramatic Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment ensures an unforgettable evening for all. Before the feasting and dancing even begins, outrigger canoes carrying the royal court glide past the ancient Hawaiian temple on the seaward border of the hotel, an incredible spectacle you’ll want to capture on camera! Honu’s Restaurant is also a treat, overlooking the beachfront and complete with firepits so you can linger long after the sun has set. For more casual fare, Billfish Bar serves dishes such as calamari ‘fritte’ and seafood cobb salad as well as signature cocktails. To work off all that delicious food, there’s a recently opened tennis centre with two championship hard courts as well as hiking and biking through glorious state parks.

Paid a fair price for a beach view but got a second floor room with a roof view of the convenience store next door. When I complained, they said they had no rooms with a better view. Considering how many hotels are In Kona, I would go elsewhere next time.

This hotel is a perfect example of the principle that you get what you pay for. The place is worn out. The furniture in the room is all chipped, stained and flimsy. The electric outlets on the two lamps between the beds do not work. Luckily I brought "multipliers" that we were able to use on the two remaining outlets in the room so we could recharge our phones or computers while watching TV or making coffee. The bathroom is so small that you cannot have two people in there at the same time. The safe in the room did not work. There are no black out curtains on the windows so the morning sun will wake you up at 6 AM. The entire hotel, inside and outside, needs a paint job. I doubt if I would stay here again. Read less

Stayed in this hotel a night until our timeshare check in. Arrived late (11PMish) and very little choice in the way of food options, other than McD. Hotel was clean and room was great. Spent a little time in the pool area the next day which is very nice. Overall rating is very good to excellent.

I just stayed at this property and found it to be very dated. The walls were paper thin. I could clearly hear the luau which was a good distance away. I could here the maids vacuuming 4 doors down. The next door neighbor could be clearing heard through the walls caughing and clearing his throat. I made arrangements to go to another… Read more

The next door neighbor could be clearing heard through the walls caughing and clearing his throat. I made arrangements to go to another hotel. I was told I would only be paying for a day. I got billed today all 5 days I was supposed to stay. I called the property, explained the problem. Was put on hold 20 minutes. I hung up. Told them I was on hold for twenty minutes, got placed on hold 20 minutes again. I guess I will charge it back on my credit card. Read less

Left my iPod and several chargers, power packs and cords in a travel bag in a drawer upon checkout. Called hotel and they had me give a BRIEF description of the bag and contents. Left my iPod and several chargers, power packs and cords in a travel bag in a drawer upon checkout. Called hotel and they had me give a BRIEF description of the bag and contents. I said a green bag with an iPod. Hotel staff returned to me via mail but only the IPod, it's cord and a single charger. Most of what was in the bag did not make it back to me. In my wildest dreams I never imagined that they would take it upon themselves to pilfer my bag and keep for themselves my other chargers, power packs and cords. As a long time Marriott rewards member I have found the quality of Marriott and it's staff to be in decline. I found this hotel to be in poor quality and in dire need of upgrades. I visited this hotel in 1988 and the carpet is the same stinky carpet as it was then. I then proceeded to Kauai to the Courtyard to find that the entire hotel is in demolition and was NEVER notified of this. The jackhammers ran from sunrise to sunset. Marriott is a disgrace. Read less
