Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

Located on the grounds where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this is a stunning hotel, contemporary in feel with top notch amenities. Overlooking one of the best snorkelling bays in Hawaii, it’s a must for water sports fans as well as those who simply enjoy a beautiful beach to lie on. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance but there’s plenty to keep you entertained on-site. During high season, the Island Breeze Lu’au is one of the Big Island’s most popular events. As well as a sumptuous Hawaiian buffet to feast on, with dishes cooked in a traditional underground oven, dramatic Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment ensures an unforgettable evening for all. Before the feasting and dancing even begins, outrigger canoes carrying the royal court glide past the ancient Hawaiian temple on the seaward border of the hotel, an incredible spectacle you’ll want to capture on camera! Honu’s Restaurant is also a treat, overlooking the beachfront and complete with firepits so you can linger long after the sun has set. For more casual fare, Billfish Bar serves dishes such as calamari ‘fritte’ and seafood cobb salad as well as signature cocktails. To work off all that delicious food, there’s a recently opened tennis centre with two championship hard courts as well as hiking and biking through glorious state parks.

This location is excellent as you can walk to so many sites and restaurants. Overall I'd probably stay here again (but with lowered expectations) due to location and clean (but tired looking) rooms. Staff were very friendly and helpful. So friendly that at first I couldn't trust them. Having traveled in Mexico and other continents where they're all about trying to get your money it was difficult to accept they were genuine. But they really do care and try to help. Can't say enough good things about the staff and locals. The ABC store was very convenient to have on site. It's like a 7-11 and mini grocery store. Prices NOT inflated for its hotel location. Most of the hotel was mould free and not musty, which is unusual for an ocean front hotel (I'm allergic and sensitive to this) so high five on the cleaning! The hotel itself is pretty shabby. For instance large areas of carpet after passing the lobby had wrinkles in it. The rooms are just as tired. The main floor is built like a mall with many small places for stores, but abandoned and empty. The cost for a room is pretty much on par with the area if you booked wisely, but since it looks so tired you feel you've over paid. Having to pay a daily resort fee for essentially nothing and being required to pay for parking add to this. (I literally rented a convertible mustang through Costco for a lower daily rate than the daily parking fee. ) Restaurant had tasty food but costly. Better to walk to other locations. Lagoon area is tiny and the pictures, especially aerial pictures, exaggerate the hotel grounds size. Read less

We stayed at the Courtyard King Kamehameha for a week in March, during our spring break, and it was lovely. The location is perfect, with it being walking distance to many of the town ammenities, next to a small public beach, that was surprisingly uncrowded. My daughter enjoyed their pool above all else, anyway. The room itself looked a little dated & shabby, so could probably do with some updating, but nothing major enough to ruin our stay. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful, including the luau staff, most of the stores and the onsite restaurants - especially my daughter's favourite the Shaved Ice. The only issues we had onsite were with the pool wait-staff taking quite a long time to respond to requests and the fire alarm having gone off twice during the evening hours, causing a lot of upset with the little ones. Not much explanation or compensation was given either. Read less

Stayed here in March 2020. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The hotel is very clean, bed and pillows were comfy, bathroom was very clean. It seemed that it was recently renovated; the room looked updated and fresh. Had a nice veranda to sit on and listen to all the birds in the morning. There's an ABC Store attached so you can get everything you might need from snacks to souvenirs. The luau was fun, but since it rained the evening of the luau, it was held in the conference room instead of the lovely hotels grounds, but fun nonetheless. The grounds are well kept. There's a small beach/bay right outside for lounging or snorkeling with a rental hut for chairs, umbrellas, canoes, etc.Daily chair rental was included as well as two free drinks at the poolside bar. Nice pool with poolside bar and restaurant with good food and drinks. Daily chair rental was included. Located within close walking distance of shops and good restaurants. Entire hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Close to the main highway. About 20 minutes from the airport. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Read less

Specifically booked this hotel after outstanding experience from spring 2019, found many changes some welcome such as the remodels, other not so much, the resort fee is as described by a member of management as a "hotel tax" to another guest-- I hope the IRS is aware of this. This "hotel tax" includes options that are not available either due to minimal staffing or things I have no interest in. Either way you gotta pay. Frankly when I reviewed some recent folios I have only paid this level of resort fees for those hotels that had movie theater's and bowling alleys, this place had neither. I hope they re-think this as the hotel has so many positive things going for it to downgrade its vibe and overall great points to the level of that other mediocre lodging chains is just sad and frankly made an upgrade to Mauna Kea up the road a great option with zero resort fees and so much more available. Lastly during the rapid changes of Covid it was difficult to find a healthy meal, only bar food was available one evening, portions were small and if you aren't a drinker you come away disappointed. Hope with your new face-lift you start to compete on your positives and not just how much you can drill from your guests with add-on's and useless mandatory resort fees for nothing. Read less

The room was very clean and functional. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. We loved the location for the proximity to restaurants in the village. There is a small beach for snorkeling and swimming and it was fun to rent the kayaks and go out into the bay.
