Royal Kona Resort

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

An established resort hotel, the Royal Kona is surrounding by 12 acres of tropical landscape, just steps from the sea. Its laid-back ambience ensures a relaxing stay with amenities such as an oceanfront swimming pool and a private swimming lagoon to tempt you. There are also tennis courts for those who’ve remembered to pack their whites and a fitness centre for keeping trim. A hot favourite we think will be the Mai Tai Bar, not only serving 10 types of Mai Tai’s but set in a spectacular location, against the backdrop of Kailua Bay. The Breezaway Lounge is also idyllic, with sofas and armchairs strategically placed to offer full ocean views. Grab yourself a seat, a Mai Tai (of course!) and admire dazzling sunsets night after night. At Don the Beachcomber, the dining is as sumptuous as the view, fusing Asian inspiration and European technique to create the most delightful of dishes. Not to be missed is the Lu’au — a feast of tropical delicacies, song and dance celebrating the legends and lore of Polynesia, the dramatic Fire Dance finale is breathtaking!

This is the best hotel in Kona! We wanted a hotel that we could hear the surf of the ocean from our room and had views of the ocean, & a tiki bar and we were so glad we choose the Royal Kona for our stay on the big Island. We enjoyed coffee in the morning, and enjoying the complimentary champagne to celebrate our Anniversary in the evening on our lanai. The staff was so friendly and helpful. Johnessa, at the concierge desk gave great info on places to stop on the drive to Hilo. We went through Costco and booked a Partial Ocean View Room which had a great view of the ocean. Room 323in the Alii tower was above the lobby and we loved the room. The room had a plantation Hawaiian theme and we did not feel it was dated as some of the reviews shared. The pool was next to the Tiki bar and the Luau so you could hear the music while you swam. Don's Tiki Bar had a great Happy Hour 4-6 and we could watch our favorite football games on their TV's at the bar. At 6pm on Saturday and Thursdays they have live music and the band was really good. So sitting outside next to the ocean getting pictues of sunsets while we listened to great music was one of our favorite moments on our trip. We could walk everywhere, even Kona and Ola brewery. The only issue was that some of the outlets were loose and did not work but we never said anything because we were so happy with our room. Parking was $15 a day but worth the price of the hotel. We choose not to use Wifi so we did not have an internet charge. Will always stay here when we visit the Big Island. Read less

I love this place. The people. The food. The views. The location. The sunsets. The happy hour. The sound of the ocean from my room. I could go on forever. Some people left their hearts in San Francisco. I left mine in Kona.

This hotel is smack dab in the middle of Kona so the location can’t be beat. You can park your car and not move it for all the town shopping and eating. They have a great Happy Hour from 4-6 every day with good prices on drinks and food. The elevators are wiki-wiki which means fast in Hawaiian. The rooms are huge although the decor is outdated.… Read more

They have a great Happy Hour from 4-6 every day with good prices on drinks and food. The elevators are wiki-wiki which means fast in Hawaiian. The rooms are huge although the decor is outdated. Plus we had ants in our room. Some downfalls are the fitness room is woefully undersized for the size of the hotel. There are 3 buildings to the hotel, and one fitness room with 2 treadmills, one elliptical, one bicycle, and one free weight bench. Really!!! The carpeting in the hallways is really gross with lots of stains. Come on, people, replace it, already. Another cheap-out thing was they charged $10/day for WIFI. Almost no one does that anymore, especially at a nice resort. I would stay here again, but it would be nice if they made some improvements. Read less

We had 4 nights at this resort and had an absolutely fabulous time. The rooms, especially the bathrooms, could use an update, but they were very comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and the staff are very attentive and friendly. We would absolutely stay again if given the chance to do so.

The lagoon was beautiful as well. Our room overlooked the lagoon as well as being oceanfront. The dinning room and bar were exceptional. The food was great, and the whole open air effect was beautiful. The only negative thing I can say was the room w as not pretty. In fact it was old, but the grounds and resort made up for this. What a great location. The location could not have been better.. We had a great time! Read less
