Royal Kona Resort

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

An established resort hotel, the Royal Kona is surrounding by 12 acres of tropical landscape, just steps from the sea. Its laid-back ambience ensures a relaxing stay with amenities such as an oceanfront swimming pool and a private swimming lagoon to tempt you. There are also tennis courts for those who’ve remembered to pack their whites and a fitness centre for keeping trim. A hot favourite we think will be the Mai Tai Bar, not only serving 10 types of Mai Tai’s but set in a spectacular location, against the backdrop of Kailua Bay. The Breezaway Lounge is also idyllic, with sofas and armchairs strategically placed to offer full ocean views. Grab yourself a seat, a Mai Tai (of course!) and admire dazzling sunsets night after night. At Don the Beachcomber, the dining is as sumptuous as the view, fusing Asian inspiration and European technique to create the most delightful of dishes. Not to be missed is the Lu’au — a feast of tropical delicacies, song and dance celebrating the legends and lore of Polynesia, the dramatic Fire Dance finale is breathtaking!

Amazing location within walking distance of Kona shops and restaurants. The hotel has a great bar/restaurant as well. We had an Ocean Front room with a wonderful sunset view! The staff were great ! While not the most luxurious, the pricing and location made up for it. I would definitely stay there again!

We got what we expected. My husband made the reservations, wanting: an inviting atmosphere; comfort; a friendly, helpful staff; close to eating establishments; and so on. We found our room to be comfortable, clean, and quiet, with a very responsive housekeeping unit. We loved the lay-out of the hotel with the circular, open reception area and adjoining bar/restaurant. The restaurant was not open for evening meals, but had a dining room and buffet for breakfast. Quite impressive. The Royal Kona is an older hotel, but has all the amenities that we wanted, a pool, sunning areas, a super Luau, and a large parking area for folks with cars. The staff also makes reservations ahead of time or helps you with them at the desk. Every night different music flowed from the open bar/eating area. We were pleased with the hotel and would stay there again. Read less

Great location, but rooms are a bit worn and could use some freshening. Don the Beachcomber's is on the property offering great Mai Tais, outstanding views and live entertainment. However, they shut down around 9pm, so no nightcap. There is no place to get a coffee to go in the morning and had to go outside of the resort. The pool area is… Read more

Awesome resort. Nothing to complain or worry about. I know there are reviews regarding a "dated" feel of the resort, but if that's your worry, then you're not ready for most of the Big Island. Two weeks to turn off the news and social media, and just relax. I look forward to a return trip as soon as possible. Very vibrant night life. Zero… Read more

My favorite event: cliff jumping at South Point. Soak up the Aloha. Read less

It is an older property when you find a bottle cap opener on the wall in the bathroom at this hotel!!!! Royal Kona Resort is in a wonderful location to downtown and to Bongo Ben's and the OceanFront Art Gallery! They host the best Hawaiian Luau. Great food and the Fire Dancers are fabulous!!!!
