Royal Kona Resort

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

An established resort hotel, the Royal Kona is surrounding by 12 acres of tropical landscape, just steps from the sea. Its laid-back ambience ensures a relaxing stay with amenities such as an oceanfront swimming pool and a private swimming lagoon to tempt you. There are also tennis courts for those who’ve remembered to pack their whites and a fitness centre for keeping trim. A hot favourite we think will be the Mai Tai Bar, not only serving 10 types of Mai Tai’s but set in a spectacular location, against the backdrop of Kailua Bay. The Breezaway Lounge is also idyllic, with sofas and armchairs strategically placed to offer full ocean views. Grab yourself a seat, a Mai Tai (of course!) and admire dazzling sunsets night after night. At Don the Beachcomber, the dining is as sumptuous as the view, fusing Asian inspiration and European technique to create the most delightful of dishes. Not to be missed is the Lu’au — a feast of tropical delicacies, song and dance celebrating the legends and lore of Polynesia, the dramatic Fire Dance finale is breathtaking!

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Not a comparable sister hotel to the Royal Lahaina

We stayed at the Royal Lahaina in Maui and based on that experience we had similar exceptions of the sister hotel in Kona. Unfortunately, the properties are not comparable. Pros: 1. The hotel staff was wonderful, friendly and helpful. 2. Location of the hotel is very convenient to downtown Kona. 3. The room balconies was the highlight of the room. Cons: 1. I think we would have been more forgiving if we were not so impressed by the Royal Lahaina. We were surprised that the rooms at this hotel feel like they are from the 1980's while the rooms at the Royal Lahaina are modern. The lack of electrical outlets and the less luxurious bed, furniture and fixtures compared to the Maui hotel is striking. 2. In Maui we rarely had trouble parking. Here, in Kona, finding a parking spot was a game of driving around and around the parking lot for 5-10 minutes hoping that someone would leave. There was one point where we saw someone walking to a spot and I asked if they were leaving so I could follow them. Then, when I was walking to my car, another person did the same tactic with me. It's not bad, it's not great. It is average. Read less

Rooms not great as many have mentioned, the beds were horrible. I really enjoyed the view from the room and the dolphins you can see right out front. This was truly magical. Many reasturants within walking distance. Resort staff were friendly. The pool was nice just wish it was bigger.

We stayed 3 nights in the Royal Kona Resort. We were first assigned to an upper floor room in the main building, but my girlfriend wanted to be down on the first floor. So they moved us to room 378 in the Bay Tower (which is the one closest to town). The room had a king bed, TV., A/C, 2 end tables and lamps, 2 inside chairs a tall bureau, a phone, (a high) electronic safe, small fridge, iron and ironing board, coffee maker, and a wet bar. The bathroom had a tub and shower. The lanai was huge, with 2 chairs, 2 loungers, and a table. But it had low walls, with the neighbors, so not as much privacy as desired. The window "blinds" were sliding wood blinds. Our room was a hike from the bar and pool area. And you had to go directly through a restaurant along the way. We were surprised that there was only one pool for such a large hotel. Since my girlfriend doesn't walk too well, this was an inconvenience, but being close to other restaurants in town made up for it. We used the laundry in the Lagoon Tower. While there, I checked out the lagoon, but it was closed - don't know why. As others have mentioned, there are only 7 handicap parking spaces in front of the hotel. But they are free, if you can get one. We enjoyed eating at Huggos On The Rocks restaurant, and watching the huge waves crash, over by our room. We were sure the patio would be wet when we returned, but it wasn't. Nice, but didn't seem like a resort that provided for all guests (especially those in the Bay Tower), so unlikely to return. The staff was so welcoming and kind. We loved the location and the architecture of the building. The food and drinks were very good. The grounds were beautiful and everything was clean. My only complaint are the rooms. While they are clean with a comfortable bed, they really really need to be updated.
