Royal Kona Resort

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

An established resort hotel, the Royal Kona is surrounding by 12 acres of tropical landscape, just steps from the sea. Its laid-back ambience ensures a relaxing stay with amenities such as an oceanfront swimming pool and a private swimming lagoon to tempt you. There are also tennis courts for those who’ve remembered to pack their whites and a fitness centre for keeping trim. A hot favourite we think will be the Mai Tai Bar, not only serving 10 types of Mai Tai’s but set in a spectacular location, against the backdrop of Kailua Bay. The Breezaway Lounge is also idyllic, with sofas and armchairs strategically placed to offer full ocean views. Grab yourself a seat, a Mai Tai (of course!) and admire dazzling sunsets night after night. At Don the Beachcomber, the dining is as sumptuous as the view, fusing Asian inspiration and European technique to create the most delightful of dishes. Not to be missed is the Lu’au — a feast of tropical delicacies, song and dance celebrating the legends and lore of Polynesia, the dramatic Fire Dance finale is breathtaking!

As posted by others, this hotel is in a great location with great views. It is a little worn, and could stand with some improvements, and I felt it was a little pricey for what we got, but we did have a nice stay overall. Since we were driving from another part of the island on check in day, I called early that morning and asked for an early check in. I was told it shouldn't be a problem, but that I should check as we got closer. I called again 30 minutes away and they still couldn't guarantee me anything. Arriving at 1pm, I went to the desk to see if we could check in. At first I was told that I could upgrade to a full ocean view (I had a partial ocean view reserved) and she could get me right into a room. She informed me it would be an additional $40 a night. So then I asked if I didn't upgrade how long I would have to wait for a room, and she said she had one ready for me, but wanted to see if I wanted to upgrade first. I found that rather sneaky! Other than that, check in was fine and there were no issues with our bill at any point of the trip. This hotel has a luau on the property that is quite popular. We had reservations for it the first evening and I have reviewed it separately on TA. Our second evening, since we were not attending, we realized how much it affected everyone else at the hotel. Parking was crazy and the line out front covered the front of the entire hotel! We had other plans that evening, but when we came back, we had a very hard time finding a spot to park. The attendants did squeeze us in, since we were hotel guests with a parking pass, but the lot was very full with luau attendees and busses were dropping off big groups at the door. It was quite crazy. We were four people to our room with two beds. The hotel price was good with a BOGO breakfast deal. But they charged $35 each per night for our two adult children. I thought that a bit excessive. (I knew this at the time of booking, but still think it is a lot) So at that price you would think that we would have 4 bath towels in our room, right? Nope. At no time did the maid leave more than 2. It was easy to get more though, because the pool towels are easy to grab at the gift shop and they ask everyone to keep them in their room for the maids, so we just grabbed extras and made do. The breakfast buffet was great! Pricey, but the BOGO deal made it worth it. Checking in the first day, the lady at the podium made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. The second day's lady was much better. The pool was smaller than expected, but not crowded during the day, so it was sufficient. The waitresses from the bar come over to check if you need drinks or food, which was great! Our partial ocean view was lovely!! Saw lots of ocean and all of the bay. We were there over the 4th of July and could see the barge shooting off fireworks in the bay, so it was a great location. We overlooked Huggo's on the Rocks next door and the music was quite loud in the evenings, but calmed down in time for bed. They have tiki torches over the water, and the view was nice from our room. Overall, this hotel was a good place to stay. Customer service ranged from ok to not so good. The room was clean and location was great! So it earns a solid 4 stars from us. Read less

It would have been nice to have a separate pool for adults also in the picture description it appear that there was a jacuzzi.the hours for the pool for closing was to me a bit early. The customer service I experience was not consistent. Overall made the best what I had.

We booked a room here last minute after a snafu with our original Airbnb while staying on the big island. Customer service was great, the view of the ocean was amazing. Very friendly staff and a quick and easy drive/walk to all the sights on Ali'i drive!

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Kona a couple of years ago and enjoyed it so much that on our vacation to the island this year, we returned to stay a few nights while we were in Kona. We were greeted and assisted by David at the front desk....he was great and started our stay off on a very positive note. He went above and beyond to find us a room that we would love and feel comfortable in. We were even surprised with a bottle of Champaign to celebrate our stay. The evening got even better while we were in the bar area for drinks and a meal. We had the pleasure of meeting the manager Paul. He too went out of his way to make our evening perfect! Although he was busy with other customers, he made us feel like we were the only ones in the bar. He definitely knows customer service and is an asset to the hotel! We wanted to share our positive experience with a manager at the front desk and we spoke to Wendy, who was also very pleasant. She was happy to hear that we had praises for David and Paul and she too made us feel like valued customers. The only negative thing to say about our experience is that the evening before we checked out, we called for an 8 AM wake up call. It was a good thing that we also set the alarm on my husband's phone because we did not get a wake up call. About 8:30 AM, I called and spoke to someone at the front desk. According to her information, she said a call was made at 8 and again at 8:09 AM, neither of which we received in our room. We were already awake at that time and can say positively that the phone did not ring. Thankfully we did get up on time and made it to our flight, but by no thanks to the hotel wake up service. I mentioned this to the manager at the front desk when we checked out on the 9th, but she very rudely and adamantly informed me that there was no error on their part, even though the individual I spoke to on the phone initially to question why we didn't get a call....Catherine, inferred that there was something wrong with their system. So word of caution.....do not use or depend on the hotel's wake up service!!! I also brought up to this not so friendly or customer service orientated manager that it was not fair that the people that drove over to the Luau from other hotels received their parking validated, while the customers staying in the hotel did not receive the same consideration for one day of their stay. This I felt was unfair and discriminative.....we paid the same money for the luau and we were also paying the hotel for staying there. Over all, the hotel stay was very pleasant, due mostly to the service of a few employees we came in contact with. The location is great, however, the rooms could use a little bit of updating. I hope the hotel will work on the wake up call service and will rethink their policy on validating the parking of those staying in the hotel as well. Read less

We didnt need wifi because we have a date plan. The staff was really friendly which is important to us. The best part was hearing the ocean crashing against the shird all night and day, love it. The building g is a little out dated but seems well maintained for age. Picture below could not do the beauty of the view justice... Read less
