Royal Kona Resort

Big Island, Hawaii

The hotel

An established resort hotel, the Royal Kona is surrounding by 12 acres of tropical landscape, just steps from the sea. Its laid-back ambience ensures a relaxing stay with amenities such as an oceanfront swimming pool and a private swimming lagoon to tempt you. There are also tennis courts for those who’ve remembered to pack their whites and a fitness centre for keeping trim. A hot favourite we think will be the Mai Tai Bar, not only serving 10 types of Mai Tai’s but set in a spectacular location, against the backdrop of Kailua Bay. The Breezaway Lounge is also idyllic, with sofas and armchairs strategically placed to offer full ocean views. Grab yourself a seat, a Mai Tai (of course!) and admire dazzling sunsets night after night. At Don the Beachcomber, the dining is as sumptuous as the view, fusing Asian inspiration and European technique to create the most delightful of dishes. Not to be missed is the Lu’au — a feast of tropical delicacies, song and dance celebrating the legends and lore of Polynesia, the dramatic Fire Dance finale is breathtaking!

The first night we checked in Huggo's bar across the bay kept playing loud music past 10:40 pm, the sound carried over the water as if they were just next door. I complained to the front desk, they said it was unusual and moved us to the main tower (Alii tower), top floor with better ocean view. I take one star off for the outdated room, not enough plugs for all the devices we use today, and dresser was old and hard to move drawers. No WiFi in the room. Hotels in Waikiki in-room WiFi was included with the resort fee, but here it was additional $9.99 which we opted out. Otherwise loved the stay, will go back. Read less

Good location in Kona to shops and restaurants. Nice pool and bar with a small beach area. Rooms are okay as they are "hotel" rooms. Rooms facing north in main building overlook roof of kitchen/restaurant and if you open doors to patio you get smells from vents below and noise of fans. We upgraded to get away from this area. Friendly staff.

We’ve stayed at the Royal Kona in the past. Every year it gets a little worse for wear. Hasn’t been upgraded in years, staff are not friendly and parking is a disaster. Even though we paid for parking, the parking lot is over booked when there’s a luau, so have to wait to park when luau is finished. Front desk staff couldn’t have cared less.

Only one thing we noticed and didn’t like so much was couches cushions color around Maitai Bar changed red to blue. Red was more eye catching and good contrast color with ocean. But this is still our favorite place. Update: We went back to this hotel from December 6 again. It was unusually windy for first 2 days but we enjoyed a lot. I think the MaiTai Bar is the best view bar in the whole world. And we love the view from “lanai”(balcony) in our room. Beautiful ocean view. And so many wild dolphins came to the front of the hotel again!! It was amazing!!! We love everything about this hotel! Read less

Wonderful place anytime but especially during the holidays in the village. After the Christmas parade, easy to walk to and just in time for spectacular sunset view from Don the Beachcomer, resort pool or your room lanai.
