The Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa

Big Island, Hawaii

Virgin rating

The hotel

Spanning 22-acres of oceanfront, adjacent to Keauhou Bay, this truly special resort offers a perfect location for an authentic Hawaiian experience. Most of the resort overlooks the ocean and feature beautiful colours and prints created by renowned Hawaii designer, Sig Zane. Another highlight is the fantasy pool, set on several different levels and dramatically nestled along the ocean’s lava cliffs — it really is unequalled in all of Hawaii, something we don’t say lightly! Kids will love the 200-foot winding waterslide at the oceanfront lagoon pool. For something a little more sedate, head to the Ho'Ola Spa — ‘ho'Ola’ means to heal, and you’ll certainly come away feeling that way. Using a mix of cultural traditions, treat yourself to a massage, facial or body treatment — the spa is also home to the Himalayan Salt Room, the first in Hawaii.

Kona Resort is in a beautiful location but it's in a years long renovation which, for me, meant far less enjoyment. Construction noise begins at 8 AM and extends throughout the day sometimes until past 6 PM every day of the week. The sound of concrete saws pierces the air. Front desk staff will tell you that most of the work has been completed but that doesn't mean that guests are not subjected to the noise of construction and the inconvenience of various of the elevators and walkways to guest rooms being closed. If you can get one of the very nicely renovated rooms and only use the hotel for sleeping you should be fine but if you're planning to hang around the hotel, its pools and surroundings, be prepared for lots of loud noise throughout the day. Overall we had a good experience, due to the staff. Room was recently renovated and very nice. It was clean and the beds we’re comfortable. There is not a beach right at the resort, you have to walk a short distance to a small beach, mostly used by locals near the boat launch. Snorkeling equipment was available at the pool to take with you. My wife and I enjoy long walks along the coastline and there are really one available here. We would generally have to drive somewhere to take walks. Pool area was nice but due to the construction the food and beverage service was limited. Overall a good experience. Read less

The updated rooms are beautiful! We love the Staff at the Kona location. Saleisha and Kiara were phenomenal at check, Griffin in Valet and Roy in housekeeping went over and above! We had a hiccup with the first room but Saleisha really went out of her way to correct it, we highly recommend this location and will definitely be back!!!

The wait staff was very good. The food was over-priced and only so-so. The female singer was too loud and a bit annoying. Not many other dinner guests on a Friday night which makes me wonder if there are no repeat customers. The decor was lovely.
