The Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa

Big Island, Hawaii

Virgin rating

The hotel

Spanning 22-acres of oceanfront, adjacent to Keauhou Bay, this truly special resort offers a perfect location for an authentic Hawaiian experience. Most of the resort overlooks the ocean and feature beautiful colours and prints created by renowned Hawaii designer, Sig Zane. Another highlight is the fantasy pool, set on several different levels and dramatically nestled along the ocean’s lava cliffs — it really is unequalled in all of Hawaii, something we don’t say lightly! Kids will love the 200-foot winding waterslide at the oceanfront lagoon pool. For something a little more sedate, head to the Ho'Ola Spa — ‘ho'Ola’ means to heal, and you’ll certainly come away feeling that way. Using a mix of cultural traditions, treat yourself to a massage, facial or body treatment — the spa is also home to the Himalayan Salt Room, the first in Hawaii.

We are not seeing this hotel at its best - as it is undergoing renovations just now. On the positive side - the rooms are a generous size with big balconies There is a couch and a coffee table. The bathroom sink is in an alcove with good space around it. There is a microwave - but no plates or cutlery or even wine glasses. Just plastic cups - which are even wrapped in plastic. A COVID hangover perhaps. The drying rack on the balcony for towels and swimming gear is also a handy touch. One downside is that there are only PowerPoints on one side of the king bed and a small table with no power or ability to charge anything on the other side. The resort itself has two lovely pools and a water slide. I have been a bit disappointed in the eating options. There is one cafe tucked at the back of the property. This is the only eating spot for breakfast and dinner. The poolside bar is the only option for lunch. The only other option for food is the convenience store with long opening hours. They have some pre- prepared sandwiches and a large selection of snacks and drinks. The cafe is tucked in at the back of the resort - not taking advantage of the stunning ocean views. The Resort itself is a little isolated - with other dining and shopping options a drive away rather than a walk. The fire and feast luau available on Mondays and Thursdays is excellent. And you are close to the harbour for manta ray and snorkeling trips. Read less

Amazing resort with solid employees who provide 5 star service. Located 15-20 minutes from DT Kona, the property has self and valet parking. One must rent a car to get around or can use the trolley that is complimentary that has several stops. Rooms are spacious, great bath amenities, offers a mini-fridge, a lot of outlets in rooms. Property offers two pools (one family and one adults only). Two locations to eat, Wailele Cafe (delicious items for breakfast and dinner) and the Holua Poolside Bar & Lounge (best mai tais ever). In addition, there is a retail store that serves coffee, smoothies, snacks and more. Hotel has breathtaking views of the mountains and ocean. There is a walkway one can sit and enjoy the scenery. The Stingray viewing deck is great to spot stingrays at night. WiFi available throughout property. Though the property is getting a facelift, the solid service we received from the employees overshadow this an area. The property was a Sheraton, and Outrigger is making it changes to make it their own. Any negative reviews on the property is a result of lack of research from guests. Shoutouts to employees who provided 5-star service: - Lala (retail store, always peepy and asked how my day was coming) - Hua-Wai and Monae (Cafe, mornings) - Letty and Setai (Housekeepers. Though I declined service, they always asked if I needed anything) - Veronica and Karen (Front Desk) - Andre & Joe (Engineering) - Noa (Valet) - Dora (Operator, whom I met In person later during my stay and was very pleasant) - Kaualii (Pool Bartender, makes the bets Mai Tais) - Conrad and Kim (servers at the Cafe for dinner) Read less

Sometimes I get lucky with an ocean view. But my favorite part is in the morning when I go down for breakfast. The ladies who I’ve interacted with at the restaurant make my stay every time I’m here. They always welcome me with a smile and so much kindness. They are friendly and caring. They definitely make me feel welcome and that this is my home away from home. Shout out to Marie, Melissa, Monae, Celeste and Jen, you all make my day! Thank you!!! Read less
