1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

Kauai, Hawaii

Virgin rating

The hotel

A Hawaiian haven on Kauai's North Shore, this beautiful hotel is all about wellness, relaxation, and sustainability. With stunning views over Hanalei Bay, this really is an oceanfront sanctuary where you can enjoy as much or as little activity as you like. The beach is right on your doorstep, be it for a relaxing swim or a spot of paddle boarding and kayaking, and the cute town of Hanalei isn't far away to explore. But the highlight of this hotel (in our opinion) is the spa. With natural and organic products, and individualised treatments, you'll be feeling the effects long after your treatment has finished. The adults-only infinity pool is another highlight, with ocean views and a poolside bar, so you can enjoy some peace and quiet with a cocktail in hand. There's two other pools though, with a shallow one that's particularly suitable for the little ones, whilst Seedlings Kids club is a fun, educational space where the little ones can enjoy a host of activities inspiring imagination and discovery. And we haven't even touched on the food. There's a wide range of bars and reataurants that focus on locally sourced food - we're pretty sure you'll never go hungry here. All in all, this hotel is perfect for active families, solo travellers, and newlyweds alike.

We wrote a review with the items below to 1 Hotels and never heard back: Our stya was in March of 2024. We checked in around 2 PM and were told housekeeping was in our rooms finishing up. No problem since we know check-in time is later and we still had to have lunch. However, our expectation was set for the room to be ready after lunch since they told us housekeeping was just finishing up. After lunch, we went back to the desk and were told the room was not ready. We checked again at 4:10 PM and they said they were still cleaning our rooms but one of them was done so we could move in there. If we hadn’t asked we would have continued sitting in the lobby. The second room was not done until 4:30 PM. The King Oceanside room only had three regular hangers, and three pant hangers, which is not enough even for just a couple. They brought new ones when requested, but we had to wait to unpack. The TV in one of the rooms was not working, which was identified by housekeeping. They did send out maintenance who came to fix it within 30 minutes. Lighting in the room at night is not sufficient. We had reservations at Avelina Lounge. While we did see the sunset ceremony which has a Hawaiian vibe, the rest of the experience felt like it could’ve taken place anywhere else in the world. It feels like the Hawaiian vibe is taken out of the hotel with Ibaza lounge music playing around the entire hotel. Two days we were charged for an extra breakfast buffet when parents ate a la carte and had to wait for the check to be adjusted. The next day around 12:30 PM we went to the Neighbors café to pick up a light lunch. We were told that they were already out of all the food items and only had smoothies. When we asked if the dates could be omitted from one of the smoothies, we were told that smoothies are not made fresh, but are premade, so nothing can be taken out. When asked, if maybe the gazpacho soup was still available they said they don’t have that at all and had forgotten to take it off the menu. At the same time, one of us went to set up at the pool. There were no towels available at all. We were given two chair covers and told we could dry ourselves off with those. Nobody walked to the chairs with us to set up the covers or the chairs. General feedback: We had a king ocean-view room, as well as a two-queen Ocean view room. The layout of the king room is terrible. There is no division between the bathroom and the bedroom. Even being there with a spouse it is nice to have a little privacy in the shower. The sink is right behind the bed, not in a separate room. This also comes into play when one person in the room has to get up really early or shower earlier than the next person. At least in the double queen room there is a little blind that can be drawn down between the open shower and the bedroom portion of the room, and the bathroom is a closed space. Other issues: Ordered wine out of stock, many mistakes at the restaurants, breakfast taking an extremely long time, no tea or coffee at Avelina even though it is a restaurant. Tea should be available at a wellness resort, keys always deactivated , we were encouraged to use the app but it kept malfunctioning and staff did not know how to fix it, breakfast buffet running out of plates and bowls consistently, running out of food items at buffet. The hotel rooms are pretty but not very functional. The best thing in the room was the filtered water tap. We are aware that there is a staff shortage, but maybe until that is solved, the pricing should be adjusted accordingly. I feel you are paying for a lot of things that look nice but do not enhance the experience. Read less

I have been reluctant to write this review, but feel it’s necessary. Although located in a very beautiful spot in Kauai, the hotel has some flaws. 1. I have been reluctant to write this review, but feel it’s necessary. Although located in a very beautiful spot in Kauai, the hotel has some flaws. 1. The casual coffee bar was out of specific food items at 8a.m. No which or a so bowls, which they were known for. 2. Check-in- a little awkward since there is not front desk, just people lounging around on sofas. Although some were helpful the person we had was not. She quickly checked us in, but did not tell us or show us anything about the hotel. I got the information from the people we were traveling with. 3. Most importantly, the safe in the room is located in a bottom drawer of a dresser, which is very awkward to access and pull out, because of the weight of the safe. My husband strained and injured himself. When I mentioned this to management , their response was ,c all us directly the next time you would like to come? This was after our return. My husband is still going to physical therapy because of this. We did love the spa and the restaurant off the main bar. Both very good. Read less

Great accommodations, amazing views, and beach with snorkeling right off the property. Special shoutout to the Sandbox bar team (Eric, Branden, and Devon). They embody the spirit of Aloha and hospitality. (Only critique is the concierge we were texting with wasn’t as helpful as we would have hoped.)
