The hotel

A Hawaiian haven on Kauai's North Shore, this beautiful hotel is all about wellness, relaxation, and sustainability. With stunning views over Hanalei Bay, this really is an oceanfront sanctuary where you can enjoy as much or as little activity as you like. The beach is right on your doorstep, be it for a relaxing swim or a spot of paddle boarding and kayaking, and the cute town of Hanalei isn't far away to explore. But the highlight of this hotel (in our opinion) is the spa. With natural and organic products, and individualised treatments, you'll be feeling the effects long after your treatment has finished. The adults-only infinity pool is another highlight, with ocean views and a poolside bar, so you can enjoy some peace and quiet with a cocktail in hand. There's two other pools though, with a shallow one that's particularly suitable for the little ones, whilst Seedlings Kids club is a fun, educational space where the little ones can enjoy a host of activities inspiring imagination and discovery. And we haven't even touched on the food. There's a wide range of bars and reataurants that focus on locally sourced food - we're pretty sure you'll never go hungry here. All in all, this hotel is perfect for active families, solo travellers, and newlyweds alike.

Positives: rooms have incredible views. Listening to the waves every morning and nught is incredible. Gym is a benchmark. Best gym in a hotel by far. Negatives: rooms are small. Food is shameful for a 5 star hotel. Not many choices in Princeville, so you might get stuck eating here. Quality of burger is similar to something akin to a cafeteria at your local city zoo. We had several issues with the service. The personnel is very nice and helpful, but unreliable. There is not a front desk. Makes it very difficult to find someone to get help or simply ask a question. Simple tasks that should take a couple minutes, end up taking over 15-20. Good luck if you have a boat tour and need to leave very early. Hotel is far away from rest of the island. Takes near an hour to get anywhere. Rains a lot in this part as well. Hotel is small, run out of things to do quickly. In summary: spend your money elsewhere. In comparison to other 5 stars we’ve stayed at, this one has a long way to go. Read less

I think the hotel is overrated for the price. It does have a nice semi secluded beach that’s protected from big waves. The staff at the valet is super friendly. The Hawaiian ladies at the reception are really nice, the other one is not so nice. We wanted to eat at Wailea terrace but their hot food side was broken so they weren’t serving much for… Read more

We wanted to eat at Wailea terrace but their hot food side was broken so they weren’t serving much for dinner so we had to go elsewhere. I went to the spa for a massage, overall it feels like a basic spa with the Bamford amenities. Read less

My husband and I stayed at the 1 Hotel for 5 nights. This hotel is beautiful and the only luxury property in Hanalei. The service from the valets, to the front desk, to the bartenders and waiters, everyone was so helpful, nice and accommodating. We were in an ocean view king room . It was very comfortable with lots of space . It had a filtered water dispenser which was a great touch. They also had a Nespresso and tea kettle. They did not provide teabags, but I was able to get some at breakfast. The breakfast was great, nice selections on the menu and also a buffet. The breakfast sandwich and pancakes were our favorites. We ate in the Terrace as well. Very small and expensive bites, not sure it was worth the cost . However the live music and sunset moment was great . The spa was really great . I had a scrub and massage with Asher. He was exceptional. He was very skilled and intentional. One of the best massages I’ve had. And not your typical hotel experience. My husband also had a great experience with both a massage and a haircut. The hotel is also geared to families, so lots of kids and a large pool area for kids and families . We stayed mostly at the adult pool which was small, but great service . Hannah took good care of us . The hotel is also an easy 10 minute drive into Hanalei so it was easy to go town and enjoy the shops and restaurants there too. Read less

The rooms have low ceilings, making them feel claustrophobic. The showers drip water from poorly sealed plumbing. Doors and furniture have scratching, a sign of age or poor maintenance. The overall property's lay out is cumbersome. The staff is pleasant, smiles and is attentive. The 1 is and feels crowded. The property is fairly isolated so guests have very little options of things to do or places to go outside of the well manicured compound. The food is average at best. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Island would be well served by a property that has sophistication while retaining Hawaiian traditions. The 1 Hotel attempt leaves a lot to be desired. Not the experience I had expected, mostly because guests all gather in large number in the same areas, with loud music providing the topping on the cake. Average in taste and decoration, in fact it borderlines a motel feeling. Overpriced for what it is. Do not forget that the location, the natural setting itself is gorgeous. Read less
