The hotel

Rooms at the Sheraton are located amid 20 acres of lush gardens, and you can upgrade for stunning views of Poipu Beach on Kauai's sunny South Shore. Kauai is known as the 'Garden Isle' because of its natural beauty and the Sheraton lets you take in the stunning views all over the resort, from the 24-hour fitness centre overlooking the ocean to Shells Steak and Seafood offering 180-degree panoramic view of Po'ipu Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The ambience of the restaurants is as important as the food itself, which ranges from Pacific Rim and regional American to Naniwa, a Japanese restaurant and sushi bar. The Point Lounge features amazing views of the sunset. It's also the setting for the complimentary morning quick-start refreshments and, for early risers, beautiful views of the sunrise.

My family and I decided to switch hotels from the Lihue area to Poipu on the last two nights of our nine day vacation which we quickly regretted upon arrival at the Sheraton Kauai Resort. Please be advised that there is construction going on at the resort that is no where near being done; they are in the thick of it as of May 2019. See photos I’ve attached.

Before finding out that there was construction going on in front of the room we were initially given, our poor experience began with the bellmen/valets. Nate was the first person that we had our first disappointing encounter with as he (and the other valets who were there around 2/3 p.m. on May 9th) were rushing my family and I out of our car while we were trying to separate our own luggage from our other family members luggage who were headed to The Grand Hyatt (lucky). Nate certainly remembered us because from there on out during our stay, he wouldn’t even look up once we would come back from our daily outings and was cold when he had to interact with us to retrieve or park our car. In addition to the front of the houses’ poor customer service, there is a front desk agent named “Sissy” (or at least that was the name we were given). She was condescending and extremely rude to my parents when they inquired about the possibility of changing rooms due to the noisy construction. She said to my mother “Well with the rate you booked with, you get what you pay for.” Now I’ve worked as a front desk agent in three hotels and yes, I understand that you do get what you pay for (that’s life), but I have never told a guest that in such a way. My mom wasn’t asking for an upgrade, she was asking to be moved away from the construction. After a few separate trips to the front desk, we were moved to a studio where four adults and their luggage crammed into. My 60 year old parents had to sleep on a pull out couch.

The resort itself is beautiful and I am sure once the construction is done, it will be better, but even a beautiful hotel doesn’t make up for poor customer service. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money at The Grand Hyatt down the road. Read less

There are two shopping villages within walking distance of the resort that provide plenty of local shopping and eatery alternatives. My wife left an expensive pair of shoes in our room when we checked out, and a couple of the staff went to extraordinary lengths to locate them, pack them individually and organised to get them sent through FedX to our hotel in Honolulu before we flew out for home. Highly recommended. Read less

We were checked in on 15th Feb 2019 for my 60th birthday, pointed offhandedly to our room's location with a handful of sheets with no explanation of what they were, which would have been handy after a 10hr flight, 3hrs waiting and another flight and a drive of over an hour due to traffic, as we didn't find our room in the direction of the point we were given as their numbering system is not like other hotels. A lovely man who worked for the resort helped up to find the nearest stairwell as lifts are few and far between - we realised the next day when looking through the sheets that directions were on the BACK of one of them. We went out the next day and found a message from the concierge on our return but she had left for the day so we went and saw her the next day where she gave us things that were supposed to be given to us after check in. I asked why we weren't directed to her after check in then and she said, to my surprise, 'oh I saw you both check in and they didn't send you over so I didn't wave you over'. I then asked why and she looked at me as 'why would I do that if check in didn't send you over?' Well, possibly because you left us a message in the end anyway and we had to come and see you around our sightseeing. The things she gave us were useless as we only had one more full day and we were then going to Oahu. The concierges in the area where check in is were dismissive and unhelpful but this behaviour was matched by the valets out the front who gave us and people in front of us incorrect directions which would have made us walk hours for nothing. Thankfully we thought about where we needed to be and where they said to go and worked out our own way as my husband has a very bad hip which he has since had a hip replacement on and this would have put him in incredible pain if we had followed their advice. The overall attitude and smugness of two the valets was a daily norm. The Lava Cafe/Restaurant was disappointing as for whatever reason they put Amaretto in a lava flow cocktail???? It was horrid and considering other places we found to eat, the food was overpriced for what you were served. There was another restaurant there called Rum Fire but it wasnt always open in the time we were there but cant remember why. We were better off to venture to the local places which were really good. This is my favourite island and have been looking forward to this holiday for some time but to start my 60th birthday and have staff be so nonchalant about guests, particularly since I am a Marriott member and Sheraton seem to be affilliated with them. I finished my celebration at the Hyatt Regency where upon check in we were given leis, a happy birthday greeting and then when we got to the room we found orchids sprinkled on the bed covering, a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates! A much different check in to Sheraton - the staff were very helpful and professional and friendly - another major contrast to Sheraton. If not for Hyatt Regency my celebration could have been disheartening but they made my last days very enjoyable and happy. Read less

Kelly from the Concierge desk was AWESOME and SUPER helpful in booking us a helicopter tour. The cons: Why do you charge for cabana use when no one else is even using them. We paid a lot for our stay and expected nice cabanas but only got beach chairs. When room service came, they did not refill our toiletries, we had to ask for them. When we got a notice saying that our water would be turned off for two hours at 9AM the day we are supposed to check out, we should have gotten a late check out for at least 2 hours. I called and she said 12 at the latest. The manager finally got us a late checkout at 1PM. If I had not called, we would have had to be ready to leave by 9AM and that is not fair. Lastly, this was the most annoying part. We were not notified that there would be a Luau right outside our room one of the evenings. It was SO LOUD. Especially the end, they were SCREAMING the Samoan scream that Maui from Moana does and drums non stop. I can't imagine what parents with children would do in this situation. The only solution offered to me was to change rooms. Really? Change rooms after we unpacked everything and were leaving the next day? No thank you. For these reasons, I don't think I would recommend this hotel. Read less
