The hotel

Take in the rich heritage and stately décor of ‘The First Lady of Waikiki’. Something of a legendary resort, it cleverly combines turn-of the-century Victorian elegance with modern luxuries. Relax by the pool area, under the shade of the historic banyan tree, or on the resorts private section of beach. Fancy a bit of pampering? Treat yourself to an amazing experience at the Moanalani Spa, the only oceanfront Spa in Waikiki, where the menu features relaxing treatments inspired by traditional Hawaiian healing techniques. Dining is a treat here — from the oceanfront setting of Beachhouse at the Moana to the delightful island tradition of afternoon tea at the Veranda at the Beachhouse. For a pre-dinner glass of wine or artisan beer, head to Vintage 1901 overlooking the banyan tree, or enjoy a tropical drink with live entertainment at The Beach Bar.

Moana Surfrider Hotel is an incredibly beautiful hotel with an incredibly beautiful location on Waikiki Beach. The staff are superb and the entrance, lobby and back pool area are absolutely world class. What makes this not a five star hotel is that the rooms are small and not top class. The pool has an incredibly strange system for sunbeds that makes it impossible to get a seat. If you manage to get a seat, you will be splashed by children who have taken over the pool as squatters. There are children everywhere and it spoils the experience immensely and means you can't celebrate birthdays, weddings or anything else here in the whole hotel. The breakfast buffet is outstanding but expensive, the fact that a coffee latte is not included in the 50 dollar breakfast costs is almost a joke and the charge 6 dollar more. You got the bill before you even got the food. The conclusion is, a nice hotel with things that lower the whole. Read less

Samson at the reception desk gave us a warm welcome. He offered a free breakfast and drinks and we could check in earlier. The buffe was very good but too expensive we thought. So we used the refridgerator in our room to store cheese and yoghurt for breakfast. There was coffe in the room. The hotel is renovated and has a good atmosfære. The gym is large, clean and well equipped. The air condition in our room was quiet. The room was cleaned prooerly each day by the kind and clever housekeepers. The sunbeds by the beach were very expensive we thought. 100 dollars for one day is way to much. In spite of this, We would love to come back! Read less

This is my first trip with my Grandkids ( boys 11 and 9 ) so I really wanted this to be memorable with the best experiences for them. I’m a nurse and I work in Public Service for Los Angeles County. I’m still currently here as I write this review 9 days, I can’t rest until this is addressed. While the grounds and beach access are beautiful, as well as my check in. Our poor and dining EXPERIENCES we not. My boys had hand held pool balls and was told by the staff at the beach hut towel pick up that it was not allowed… said ok and complied. Then they had pool floties, and the same guy told them they are not allowed, second incident after the balls. To be fair there is a faded sign that says no floaters allowed. So the boys complied. All the while I’m watching this process at the pool. They never addressed the parent “ Me “ only my children. I think addressing the child unless it’s an unsafe situation should not be done, addressing the parent or guardian is acceptable. This scared them. Two hours later there was a non black man and his daughter with beach toys and balls playing catch in the pool. I said nothing while my boys ran to me and said “ Grandma that’s not fair “, while they stared at me with sadness from the pool. The staff member, same guy that made my boys take the balls out, walked past the guy and paused for two seconds but said nothing. He proceeded to walk back to his station. My kids again say that and stated “ it’s not fair “. I gave my kids back their pool toys and within 5 minutes the staff girl walked over to my boys and said “ No balls in the pool “. Not sure if the guy staff member sent her instead of himself to tell them. The father and daughter that were playing had just gotten out. I walked over to her and stated that for an hour and a half you all said nothing to the father and the daughter. He explanation was “ sorry we can’t see everything “. I didn’t even address that I saw her male staff member stand and acknowledge them for a couple seconds, said nothing and walked away. Over the course of 7 days we’ve watched people with big beach balls, 2 boogie boards, floaters and more all in the pool. Each time my boys see this they say “ Grandma it’s not fair “ and they sit there watching with sadness. At that point we always leave and I take them to the beachfront of the hotel. I actually took photos of the pool because I’m bothered by the hotel staff actions as well. Three days we’ve ordered breakfast and lunch and dessert from the hotel while at the pool. I bought sandwiches at the ABC market across the way and chips. The boys came to eat on the pool chair that I was sitting on. The hotel staff ( the same lady that served me and I had been tipping) said so abrasive and loud “ No outside food allowed at pool “ and points to sign with tiny print. She told us we had to leave out spots and go sit at the table up top if we’re not ordering from the bar. There were two ladies ( non black ) that I had been chatting with all day, our boys played together. The one lady said that was rude of her and immediately left to sit in the area even though she didn’t have food. The other lady was appalled by the staff’s statement and said that that lady staff is so pushy. The lady also stated to me that every time she orders from her she feels rushed . I agreed because the first day we ordered my Grandson said “ Man grandma she keeps cutting you off “ and she was. I couldn’t even sleep last night thinking about the way we’ve been treated at the pool. We didn’t feel welcomed where we spent the majority of our time and the boys are very saddened by this. I travel at least 3-4 times a year and have never had such an unpleasant experience. We spend less time in the poo, it makes them very sad when they see others playing with things daily on several occasions they were told to take out. While the hotel room is very comfortable and the grounds are beautiful I DO NOT RECOMMEND this hotel, especially if your a Black American or of African descent. There are very few people of my race here, I’ve seen approximately 5-7 in the nine days that I’ve been here so WE clearly stand out and they make it known….. sadly. I will speak to management this morning. Read less

Moana Surfrider Hotel is the first and oldest hotel in Oahu. Hospitality was excellent! It is centrally located in the best part of Waikiki. Everything you need is steps away, restaurants, shopping, the beach. They do have a small pool, but as I mentioned, the beach is steps away and the highlight of the area. They have a great breakfast buffet that I highly recommend to do at least once. They have a great gym, with multiple machines, weights, TRX, Yoga mats and rollers. If the Spa is more your speed, book an appointment early, because they fill up fast. Pack light, they do have a guest laundry room in the basement, and it’s easy to do your laundry if needed, a must if you have kids. Our room had a mini-fridge, microwave, kettle, coffee maker. Everyday they would replenish 2 fresh water bottles, tea bag’s and coffee pods. I cannot recommend this hotel enough, well worth it. Read less
