Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Honolulu, Oahu

Virgin rating

The hotel

Take in the rich heritage and stately décor of ‘The First Lady of Waikiki’. Something of a legendary resort, it cleverly combines turn-of the-century Victorian elegance with modern luxuries. Relax by the pool area, under the shade of the historic banyan tree, or on the resorts private section of beach. Fancy a bit of pampering? Treat yourself to an amazing experience at the Moanalani Spa, the only oceanfront Spa in Waikiki, where the menu features relaxing treatments inspired by traditional Hawaiian healing techniques. Dining is a treat here — from the oceanfront setting of Beachhouse at the Moana to the delightful island tradition of afternoon tea at the Veranda at the Beachhouse. For a pre-dinner glass of wine or artisan beer, head to Vintage 1901 overlooking the banyan tree, or enjoy a tropical drink with live entertainment at The Beach Bar.

On arrival, my room had dried food on the desk that was not -cleaned up. Over the week we noticed dissension between management and the staff. The noice in the hotel is shocking as they build on the hotel drilling not stopping for hours. On one of the days while trying to rest staff were protesting outside the hotel and it was very loud. Receptionists rude Ans the Genral manger Mr Forte can never be found , last year I was here there was a problem and he disappears every time we want to speak to him he should be ashamed of himself. So overall ove priced 3 star hotel , great building but its a dead horse. Read less

Kat was an amazing Server at the Beach Bar! We ate and drank four days in a row. She provided the most excellent service by far. The other servers were good; she was just much better. Food was delicious; especially the Lilikoi Tart! Drinks were also delightful.

Great if you want to get some nice pictures (the hotel itself is beautiful), but definitely not a family friendly hotel, they should just make it adults only as it was clear kids are not welcome. Staff seemed miserable, and perhaps a toxic environment at management level. One of the balcony rails had fallen off at the time we stayed and so all… Read more

Staff seemed miserable, and perhaps a toxic environment at management level. One of the balcony rails had fallen off at the time we stayed and so all balconies were locked too. This is the third hotel we've stayed at along the beach strip and easily our least favourite. Avoid, especially if you have kids! Read less

LOCATION: A great location, right on the doorstep of Waikiki Beach and the famous Kalakaua Avenue, with its high end shops and fine dining. Perfect if you want to be in the heart of the main tourist area. It is also good as a base for tours visiting other parts of Oahu. We visited in January, essentially the middle of winter but the weather was lovely, although a storm was due to arrive the day after we left the island. ROOM: We stayed in one of the Historic Banyan ocean view rooms and whilst it was a lovely room with windows on 2 sides, one overlooking the beach and the other the hotel pool, we found the room to be on the small side, however it was adequate for our 4 night stay. HOTEL: A beautiful building with its old world elegance fused with modern facilities, it has to be one of the prettiest hotels on the island. The public areas are spacious with plenty of seats both inside, along the veranda and around the pool bar, where you can sit and relax or enjoy the scheduled live entertainment or take a wander around the hotel to admire the historical artefacts. Bare in mind, we found it to be spacious when we visited, I feel it might be a lot more crowded during high season. FACILITIES: Due to our schedule we did not get to enjoy the hotel facilities, such as the spa or one of the cultural activities on offer. DINING/DRINKS: We did not have breakfast at the hotel, we used to get an early morning coffee and pastry from Honolulu Coffee directly outside the hotel, which was very nice, hence our daily visits. We did manage to have one evening meal at the Beachhouse Restaurant which was fine, I wouldn't say it was amazing, you must eat here and oddly the drinks came in plastic cups. STAFF: For the most part, pleasant, only one person (restaurant staff) looked like he couldn't wait for his shift to be over to get away from the inconvenience of customers. The rest of the hotel staff were fine, did the job they were paid to do, no more no less. Overall an enjoyable stay, I would stay here again. Read less

We typically visit the islands and rent a car to drive to a rural area. However, we wanted to experience Waikiki this time, so we chose the historic Moana Surfrider Hotel. When you arrive earlier than check, they have a smooth process for holding your bags while you explore Waikiki or the hotel services. The lobby is comfortable and includes eating, relaxing, or people-watching options. We chose the hotel for its historic charm. We booked a Banyan Tower room with an ocean view, and we will return and get the same room. Being able to look out to the ocean and hear the ocean while sleeping was just what we needed. This room is at the edge of everything, so the internet was slower, but it wasn't a problem as we used our hot spots or downloaded movies in the lobby and watched them in the room. Every morning, we did yoga offered by the hotel and then had pour-over Kona Coffee and Acai bowls. We rented a cabana daily (there are only four, so be prepared to reserve daily.) We swam in the ocean several times daily, always coming across a turtle. While we hung out in our cabana, we had excellent service for food and yummy frozen adult beverages. There was construction noise during the day, but we put in earplugs and understand a historic hotel must work to keep structures safe. We don't like our room being serviced daily, but Perico ensured we had what we needed every day (coffee, towels, water). While at the cabana, Lee checked in on us. I discussed naming the cabanas Hawaiian flowers instead of numbers like Hau, tiara, naupaka, and Queen Emma lily. Best four-day Waikiki vacation Read less
