We stayed in a standard room at the Andaz 5th Avenue for two weeks and our stay has left us conflicted in a number of dimensions. The room was quite big, considering it was a base hotel room in NYC. Its décor might not be to everyone’s taste but it’s not generic as it’s the case in a number of hotel chains and certainly gives the room a unique vibe. Even though the hotel isn’t really new, everything there was in good working order – nothing to complain there. We also really liked the bathroom, as it was huge and had a great porcelain foot bath. Non-alcoholic drinks and snacks (of very good quality) were complimentary, which is always nice. However, there are some issues that could be improved. The room had very little storage space: there were no drawers apart from the small bedside ones and the area for hanging clothes (which wasn’t an enclosed space as one would expect at a hotel like this) was small. Moreover, we had to ask the front desk for bathrobes and a coffeemaker as they’re not provided by default. This makes no sense as they should be standard items for a hotel at this price point. In addition to that, the mattress was too soft – which certainly wasn’t to our liking – and we had trouble regulating the room temperature as there were wild swings in the air conditioning strength without making any changes in the thermostat. There were complimentary coffee (in the morning) and wine (in the evening) at the lobby, which were a nice touch – common to all Andaz properties. Interactions with staff were pleasant and polite, but there were some issues here as well: housekeeping forgot to clean our room one day, took one of our bathrobes for some reason and forgot to replace it and also failed to restock the minibar (non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are included in the daily rate) more than once. We also had to repeatedly ask for more coffee capsules, as they were never proactively restocked. They often took a long time to arrive and in some days they simply never came. There were some hiccups retrieving packages we bought online too as the front desk failed to locate some of them even though we had delivery confirmation. Thankfully, they found the packages later and everything was sorted out. Andaz’s Midtown location is very convenient for tourists in general, as it makes it easy to get pretty much anywhere both uptown and downtown. But the drawback is that it’s removed from the hustle and bustle in the evenings; the area is quite dead and sterile at night. World of Hyatt elite recognition was pretty good as we had no trouble getting an early check-in and a very generous late check-out which came in handy after our flight out of NY was delayed. So overall we had a decent stay, with nothing really serious to complain about. But there were a number of flaws that do detract from the premium feel that is expected from a hotel that charges over USD400 per night. Read less

I’m not staying anywhere else in NYC anymore besides this specific hotel. I have tried it all at this point I swear and Andaz just nailed it for me. The location is amazing. The rooms are amazing (we had a suit, which I think was rather large for NYC; also, super convenient if you’re traveling with kids). The service is amazing. The staff is so well-trained. We were checked in by Anderson and he was so courthouse and helpful, and answered all our questions. The vibe is also super crips and floor-to-ceiling windows in the rooms are an automatic mood booster. I highly recommend! Read less
