Image of the Tripadvisor rating Charming, hip, beautifully design and tastefully furnished ….small guest rooms but worth it!

Small rooms and expected but beautifully furnished and particularly the restaurant/bar and the rooftop lounge. My only complaint were there was an awful deodorizer odor in the lobby, guest room floors, elevators and some through the ceiling vents in the guest room.

The Civilian is a quaint hotel located in midtown, somewhat adjacent to Times Square but away from all the extra hustle and bustle. I stayed 8 nights in Civilian hotel and I had a great time! The bed is comfortbale, the hotel is near by Central Park, times square, 5th avenue and plenty of restaurants and things to do & the staff is friendly. I would definitely repeat the experience if I go again to NY.

The bathroom was actually pretty spacious when considering the size of the room. The bad/not-so-good: the check-in area is was much too small for a hotel of this size in the Times Square area. There was a mass of people trying to get checked in at two small desks. Then, we had to wait several minutes for an elevator as there were only two covering 27 floors. After going to a show, we returned to find only one operational as one was reserved for getting people to the rooftop bar. (There was also a rude usher guarding the elevator who was nasty to an elderly couple with a walker just trying to get to their room.) That leads me to the biggest issue: the rooftop bar was three floors above us and the bass from the music was reverberating at least down to our floor until 2 AM!!! We had no idea of this before booking. Is this supposed to be a club or a hotel? Disappointing as we liked the hotel and its location otherwise. Read less
