The hotel

The Barclay first opened its doors in 1926 under the aegis of the Vanderbilt family, quickly achieving a reputation as a hotel of distinction and exclusivity. Bette Davis, Marlon Brando and other celebrities have enjoyed its brand of hospitality in the past, now it's your turn! The hotel manages to combine old-world glamour with modern 21st-century functionality. Guests can enjoy an elegant residential design and state-of-the-art room facilities. There is also a health club for you to take advantage of. The Gin Parlour, with its club-like setting, is a great place to enjoy a pre-dinner drink before heading to one of the many restaurants and nightspots in the local vicinity.

Several years ago, we decided to try the InterContinental Barclay. The InterContinental Barclay has become our New York "home." The rooms are clean and comfortable; the staff is helpful and accommodating, and the location is terrific. We love the location for it's easy walking distance to 5th Avenue, Central Park, Bryant Park, MOMA, and Saks. And, if you enjoy walking, which we do, Hudson Yards, Chelsea Market, The Whitney Museum and more are an easy half hour to 45 minute walk. Lastly, the hotel rates, while not inexpensive, are reasonable for a top-notch hotel. Read less

I stayed her a couple of nights & I think this hotel is overpriced. I’m a diamond elite ambassador IHG member, & I can’t say this hotel did anything to acknowledge my loyalty to their chain. I went to breakfast both mornings I stayed here, & I found the waitstaff edgy & uninviting. I don’t understand why they had to act as though each guest in the dining room was a nuisance, but they did. Fortunately, for us guests, we didn’t need anything from the waitstaff except coffee or tea, because it’s a breakfast buffet & the plates are so small that the hotel seems squeamish that one might actually get full. Breakfast was not enjoyable, because the energy from the restaurant staff was unfriendly & uninviting. I saw the waitstaff be quite dismissive to some guests. We were never offered a coffee refill either day. Clearly none of the waitstaff wanted to be there & they certainly didn’t want us there either. This is not typical of New York City. I lived in Manhattan Chelsea from 1989 until 2019 & I know that New Yorkers don’t behave this way toward guests, visiting this city. The bar area was small & hardly ever anyone in it. I certainly didn’t have a drink there because it didn’t appear any more welcoming, than was the restaurant for breakfast. My room was comfortable, but it should’ve been, for the price I paid. This historical building itself, opened almost 100 years ago, is why I enjoyed my stay here & gave my review 3 stars. I’ll be returning to New York City a few more times this year for work & leisure, but I’ll look for my accommodations elsewhere. I actually find kinder hospitality at Hyatt hotels & Marriott hotels, rather than the IHG brand. Read less

We stayed at this hotel last week and had an amazing time! Miguel Vasquez was particularly memorable. He was so welcoming when we arrived and took such good care of us the entire time we were there. We love the Barclay and will definitely be back!

Overall experience was good during my stay and staffs especially the guard in front of hotel were attentive. The club area was under maintenance so we did not use full service here. The room was classic, good bedding and amenities. However, I myself found the shower was difficult to control water temperature.

I asked for extra towels the first day. It took awhile to receive them and they did not follow up on the remaining days of my trip. I had to ask every day and by the time O returned to my room and realized the towels had not been left in the room. They also did not leave wash cloths any day of the visit. We had to ask daily. Finally there is a daily amenities fee charged. You can use the daily credit to obtain items from the mini bar, but the staff did not restock the mini bar daily. Just made things a little annoying.
