One of the worst hotels I've stayed in. They were running on what felt like skeletal staff, there was hardly anyone around and we were put in the smallest room which barely fit the travel cot we requested for our daughter to sleep in. There was no fridge in the room - we had to request one so I could store breast milk) - when it arrived it didn't actually fit in the cupboard designated for it so it had to be placed in under the desk so you could no longer sit at the desk. I asked guest services if it would be possible to have a kettle in the room so I c an prepare my daughter's food and was told that guest services was closed (its was 5pm) and that I could purchase a bottle warmer from Macy's as the hotel couldn't provide boiling water( the restaurant was also closed) and they don't have kettles 'to her knowledge'. After complaining about the terrible service and the tiny room for 2 adults and a baby we were upgraded to a suite by the lovely manager Alan. He was great and profusely apologised about our experience and was able to locate a bottle warmer for us. However, inspite of the lovely upgrade I hated the entire experience. The rooms felt dirty and weren't cleaned properly, the decor of the hotel as a whole but also the rooms was very dated and honestly for the price we paid ($750 for 2 nights) it was really not worth a penny at all! In addition, the breakfast - a. JOKE! They trick you by telling you on arrival you have $30 towards extras at breakfast because we opted fro breakfast to be inclusive and I'll tell you now that $30 only covers a drink for 2 people. The buffet breakfast was vile and flies were all over the pastries, they had a selection of continental breakfast options but everything looked stale and not fresh - we went down fro breakfast at 8am and it opens at 6:30am. In the end we ordered from the menu at the restaurant and everything came out cold and tasted very below average. Sadly, I will never stay at this hotel again and considering its supposed to be such a well known hotel I was thoroughly disappointed. I will say that the few staff we encountered (there was barely anyone around it felt quite eery) were lovely and helpful - other than the teams who answer the phones. Read less

DO NOT STAY! Rooms are basic and tiny. Not worth the extreme price. Do not trust hotel photos. Foyer is stunning but It’s a 2 star hotel at best once you go to the guest rooms. So disappointed in Marriott. Same price can get you a Hilton Conrad 1 block away! DO NOT BOOK IT

I write this review after giving the JW Essex House more than 2 months to follow up on a serious incident I experienced while staying at this property. As the highest level of Marriott Loyalty status (Ambassador Elite) I am still dumbfounded by the Essex house’s lackluster dedication to customer service and health concerns. In June, I booked a stay at this property to celebrate my wife’s birthday. I had my Ambassador assist me with this booking in hopes of having the best possible stay. At arrival I was greeted by a lovely receptionist. Her name escapes me, but she was Filipino and was the only reason this review was given more than 1-star. Unfortunately, the rest of the stay was incredibly disappointing. Typically, with status I have access to the lounge, which was only partially true, at the Essex House. The first afternoon of arrival they “closed” the lounge for some unknown reason. When I inquired, no one had any answers. For all the reviews about how knowledgeable and helpful the staff that I’ve read about this property it could not have been further from the truth during my stay. Onto the most egregious and unbelievable experience was upon my return home the following day. Shortly after having arrived home I noticed my leg was itchy. After further investigation it appeared as though I had bug bites. The same was found on my wife’s legs as well. BED BUGS! I contacted the hotel promptly to notify them of this. During my phone conversation with the receptionist, I was told that the manager on duty was gone for the day and that a message would be left for that person when they return the following day. I emphasized on this call the importance of making sure that any other guests who might currently be in our same room be notified. I was told the manager would contact me the following day. To my surprise two days had passed before, I had to follow up. ME! The hotel guests who had bites on OUR legs had to escalate the concern with A SECOND phone call. The hotel then tried connecting me with the manager. Her name is Laura B. Laura shared with me that other hotel guests were staying in our room and that they could not enter to conduct a bedbug inspection until they checked-out. Once they did, she would have their “specialist” come in to provide an assessment and follow up with me regarding the findings. Guess what happened next? NOTHING. No follow, yet again. Quite the showing from management here so far, right? Anyhow, after I called to personally follow up again because our legs were still itching, I finally hear back. I was told that the inspection found no bedbugs, but the official report could not be shared with me. Instead, Laura offered to open a case and pass me onto Lourdes M and Carlos M. After multiple email exchanges and scheduled call times to discuss – no one ever followed up. Shocking? Not really. As previously stated, this lack of concern and follow up doesn’t quite live up to the JW name most of us have come accustomed to. Bottom line - do not stay at this hotel. You’ve been warned - if you get bedbug bites during your stay at the JW Essex House no one will care. Your pleas to be a responsible citizen ,so that other don’t experience the same, will go unheard.
