Recently got back from a stay at this overpriced and underwhelming hotel. We stayed at the JW in London which was exceptional so thought we would give NYC a try. BIG MISTAKE. As a titanium elite member we were given access to the Club Lounge- not only is it closed in the afternoons on Friday and Saturday which just seems absurd in a tourist haven- but when they do decide to allow you in- the offerings include such classics as yogurt, rotting fruit and a few random pieces of cheese. Complete waste of time- just close it down all together if that’s the quality you are providing your guests. By comparison, JW Grosvenor offered multiple hot items including pastas, chicken and beef, a full charcuterie spread, complimentary champagne and great coffee and tea selection all alongside fantastic customer service (at a fraction of the price). Then on to the room- we stayed four overpriced nights in a room that looked directly at a brick wall (see picture). With our status we usually get an upgrade but despite showing upgraded rooms on their website, we were told no upgrades were available. As a make good, they offered to send us champagne for our loyalty- the champagne never arrived. We called three times and no one seemed to have a record it. Eventually a $13 bottle of Prosecco arrived. Thanks for that. And quite possibly the best part of our stay- we needed some toiletries as we hadn’t had our room serviced that day- so we put a request for some towels, toiletries and a few extra pillows through their app where it says “need anything, we would be happy to assist.” 5 minute later a MANAGER calls our room inquiring about our request and if we really needed towels and soap and pillows because those are already in the room. When we explained that we hadn’t had housekeeping come during the day he grumbled and hung up the phone. Needless to say, the pillows, towels and toiletries never arrived. Lovely. On the other hand- the bar/restaurant staff was exceptional. So stop in for a drink and a meal- just don’t check in for a stay! Read less

One is also reminded of numerous movies and shows where this is the backdrop. It was an incredible hotel with wonderful rooms. Our family was there attending a wedding and most of the guests for the wedding were also staying here. There were just a few things that kept me from choosing a five star rating. The massive delay in getting our car out of the valet in the morning (40+ mins). They did not handle our early checkin as we had arranged. This was cleared up by speaking with management but that should not have been necessary. The inaccurate application of charges and credits. This was also cleared up at the desk but took a little extra time. I would certainly be open to staying at this hotel again, the next time we visit NYC. Read less

Sat at check in for 10-15 minutes while they tried to figure something out on their computer. Enjoyable weekend to come to NYC to watch the US Open for 3 days over Labor Day. Our hotel experience was totally ruined by the poor customer service at the lobby bar. We came in at around 11 35pm after the US Open tennis matches were over hoping to grab a glass of wine with some friends before bed. We were ignored for 15 minutes after we sat down and finally I flagged the bartender. He told me we are closed. I asked him when they close and he said midnight, however last call is at 11 45. I told him you have been watching us sit here for like 15 minutes and not waited on us?? His manager and his manager's manager all came over and instead of taking 5 seconds to pour two glasses of wine for us they argued with us for 15 minutes telling us to call room service.. Really pissed me off to pay $3000 to stay at this place and they can't comply with a simple customer service request??? The lobby manager looked like he was 18 yrs old and was very rude. The wine itself is completely overpriced $25/glass for a very poor cabernet, however I was willing to pay for it if someone would have waited on us.... Look to stay at another hotel that has class and customer service. Read less

We chose to stay here for our recent short trip (5 nights) to NYC. With so many offers for a Marriott Bonvoi Titanium member, it's difficult to chose the "right" place. And my past experiences in NYC were quite a mixed bag. So we decided to use the positive experience of my husband some years ago and booked the Essex House. First disappointment was the neglection of using our suite vouchers, due to zero availabilities. Then, when we checked in, we did not even receive an upgrade, as the hotel was fully booked. Unfortunately it was the US Open tournament and it seemed like everyone related to tennis was in this hotel... Despite my initial disappointment, I was positively surprised in the end! The king room we booked was a really good size and lovely decorated (seen much worse in NYC. The bathroom was spacious and elegant, incl fluffy towels and bathrobe. I appreciated the gym classes at Exhale (part of the destination fee perks) and the executive lounge. Although I have to say, that the choice, quality and presentation of the food rather reminded me of a mass tourist hotel. Still it is nice to have breakfast and evening drinks sorted, in the hotel, if you don’t go out. The location is fantastic and the attitude of staff was very friendly, which I also had seen very different in NYC. Special thanks to Yamira at Front Desk and Michael and Kevin at Concierge Desk for adding a positive flavour to our enjoyable stay. We sure will be back! Read less

Went here with my Bonvoy points and was impressed by the size and comfort of our suite, the view of Central Park and the helpfulness of the staff. It is walking distance from tons of stuff you’ll want to do in Manhattan. I drove in with my Tesla and the valets even recharged it for me during our stay.
