Image of the Tripadvisor rating Worst five star hotel experience ever, bar none

For a five star hotel that charges on average $650/night this was by far the worst experience I have ever had, bar none. Upon arrival, the hotel had no bellman to help with luggage. For a five star hotel that charges on average $650/night this was by far the worst experience I have ever had, bar none. Upon arrival, the hotel had no bellman to help with luggage. Also this alleged five star hotel has almost no service. No room services, no fridge in room, not even a tea kettle. In addition the front desk refuses to send water to the room. Complimentary water at 8 ounces a bottle can only be taken from the front desk by oneself. On top of the lack of service, there is the atrocious attitude of service. Without actually saying “No, no, f*ck off”, the entire hotel staff have done an exceptional job of conveying that exact message. In terms of the room, I understand the premium in New York, but even then the room is small and mediocrely furnished. I can hardly imagine anyone who has stayed here ever wanting to come back unless he has a glutton for punishment. I find this establishment to be shameful and terribly inadequate! Read less

We did not catch this hotel and its staff at their best. We were there Memorial Day weekend and mask wearing was still required inside the hotel. The hotel restaurant was closed. This hotel has a great view of Central Park from almost any floor. We, unfortunately, were using Marriott points and had a view of the inner shaft. If you stay here, the rooms are expensive to begin with. You should pay a bit extra and to have a view of the park. The service was lackluster. When we arrived at the front door, there was no one to take our car or bags. We went inside to check in and waited about 30 minutes total for a valet to take our keys. My wife and I wanted to attend mass our first morning there at a nearby RC church. The lady behind the front desk was very cheery but she spent at least 10 minutes to find a church. She handed us a sheet of paper that had the name and address of the church but not the mass times. She was clearly new and not well trained. The room was spacious for New York and had the look of faded luxury. There was a marble bath but the grout was missing between some of the marble on the floor. A chaise lounge was very worn with material missing on a section of the piping. There was a covid breakfast at no additional charge. The breakfast selections were limited by covid restrictions, but there was a good selection of fruit, cereals and pastries. The coffee was self service with a multi-functional machine to dispense espresso, cappuccino, etc. While sipping our cappuccinos, we missed the barista made brew we are used to almost anywhere in France and Italy and at most upscale hotels in America. This hotel is convenient to the major museums of NYC and Fifth Ave shopping. We chose the hotel because it was close to our daughters new apartment. Read less

Thank you very much to Laura Burton 🌺( Resident Manager) of JW Essex House in Central Park New York City and Madeline Vargas, Executive Assistant 🌸 it was an amazing stay at our beautiful suite . The upgrade was very much appreciated 💖 Bellman Mr Q was very helpful and courteous 👌 Felix at the reception was professional. It’s nice to meet Madeline . Great conversation 👍🏼 This property always exceeded my expectations . They followed Covid protocol seriously, that’s for the safety of everyone 👌 They offered free coffee and drinks , fresh fruits and energy bars , yogurt and all . Easy grab and go for all the guest at their Club Lounge. That’s very generous gesture from JW Essex House. Unfortunately, my favorite restaurant in house ( Southgate) is still closed 🥲 although there’s plenty of restaurants nearby, walking distance to the Columbus circle. Getting around to the Central Park is few blocks away . I enjoyed my short stay . My family enjoyed it more 😍 I loved going around few blocks shopping 🛍 to Nordstrom 💖 Even is walkable, going to 5th Avenue and to the Rockefeller center and St Patrick’s cathedral. But the most gracious reception I ever met was Hanna , very sweet and accommodating. She reminded me of Jasmine.💖 Hopefully the F and B will be back in service soon 🙏 I can’t wait to be back here again and again, my home away from home. The customer service here is exceptional!!! I had experienced great memories in this iconic place. I really can’t say thank you enough to every staff I met here 🙏💝👌 I truly highly recommend this hotel for comfort and satisfaction!!! Thank you!!! Read less

Was upgraded to a great view of CP so added a point. Added another point because the staff was very friendly. If you're a regular Marriott property during the pandemic and charging $125/nt, then I really don't expect anything more than a clean room. But if you are a JM Marriott and charging $500+ per night then I expect a nicer property and… Read more

But if you are a JM Marriott and charging $500+ per night then I expect a nicer property and full amenities. JMM's Essex House is a "tired" looking property, and for this brand to not have any restaurant or room service is unacceptable in my scoring. Read less

Things are limited with Covid-19 so the lounge for elite members doesn’t offer a real breakfast.I think more could be done here perhaps to offer delivered eggs or something upon request... However, overall would come back here with my family again. Having lived in New York it was great being back as a tourist and staying here. Thanks Essex House! Read less
