Lotte New York Palace

Midtown, New York

The hotel

Railroad magnate Henry Villard's 19th-century mansions were combined with a sleek tower to create one of the city's best hotels. It's a place where the staff greet you as if they have known you all their lives, and nothing is too much trouble. The location is one of the best in Manhattan, right in the middle of Midtown, but hidden away in a gated courtyard. There's dining options suited to all at the Lotte New York Palace, from luxury brunch to baked goods, whatever you opt for you'll be in for a treat. Enjoy handmade cocktails in one of Manhattan's most popular bars, Trouble's Trust, or relax in 19th century-style surroundings in Rarities - either make for the perfect post-day-in-the-city tipples.

The Lotte is beautiful. We loved our room on a high floor, overlooking the spires of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The bar and cafe on the first floor are cozy ... and well-equipped, with a quick salad and coffee.

Felt a bit off this time. Usually a great property but not a memorable stay this time....service so, curtain rope was broken, fixed , then broken again, fixed again, broken again you get the joke. No turn down service. Stayed on floor 39th which felt like the forgotten floor for service...

I suppose it began when we asked that the bags be carried to the room from the taxi. Hours later we discovered that the doorman failed to remove my briefcase from the trunk of the car. Bye-bye laptop, car keys and Leica camera equipment. Hotel security was either indifferent, rude or hostile depending on who was speaking. The room itself might have been luxury accommodation half a century ago but today it would give Motel 6 a run for its money. The person in the room next to us got up at 5 am. How do we know? We could hear her opening her curtains. There’s a typical anonymous hotel bathroom with sink, toilet and bathtub all crammed together like furniture in a too-small apartment. It looks like a hotel room people rent to die in. Breakfast was served in a beautiful room, but it was served only after asking four times — it seemed it was always another waiter who was supposed to take our order. I really don’t know why this institution exists. I stay in luxury hotels all over the world on three continents and never have I seen anything like this car crash of a hotel. Service with a snarl seems to be their motto. My advice? Spend a bit more money and stay at a hotel that wants you to come back. Read less
