The hotel

New York's Refinery Hotel provides a stylish and elegant twist within an exceptional Midtown location. This is all about living the high life and you only need to glimpse at the Refinery's décor and exhibition space to know that they take their art as seriously as they take their patrons' comfort. The Empire State Building, Bryant Park and the Museum of Modern Art are all right on your doorstep and after a good day's shopping on 5th Avenue there's no better way to kick off your heels than at Winnie's Jazz Lounge with some live music and a cocktail or two to ease you into the evening. Your room will be in pristine shape and comfortably classy. The beds are delicious, prompting the "like sleeping on a cloud" cliche. The restaurants (Parker & Quinn and The Rooftop Restaurant) are welcoming, and they too let you immerse yourself in one of NYC's hip spots. There's nothing "cookie-cutter" about this property. So why only 4 stars? It's almost impossible to get the hotel on the phone, even at a decent hour. The first time I stayed, my room wasn't ready at 3:00 and I had a 4:00 meeting to prepare for: no help from the front desk so I paid to upgrade to a room that WAS available. The second time I stayed (at a relatively safe time during the COVID-19 pandemic), the place was sparkling, but there wasn't a doorman to call me a cab — and I'm a senior who can't easily walk. I was told to roll my luggage to the corner of 38th and 6th Avenue and hail a cab from there — on a cold and rainy day . In short, the property has been beautifully designed and kept, which makes it an excellent place to stay for a blast of NYC. But the Customer Service will leave you feeling less than cared for ... and that's a real shame. Read less

Service was great. Room was nice and large (Suite). No valet parking, which we thought they did have, do to being short staffed (also understood). Service was wonderful fulfilling my requests for champagne, flowers and chocolate strawberries in the room at arrival (thanks Tina!). Will stay again for a nice weekend get away!

My first time to stay at The Refinery Hotel and I was there on business. The room was very clean and the staff was very accommodating. At times I need to travel by myself and the rooftop restaurant was fantastic place to eat so that I didn't need to leave the building. I would highly recommend The Refinery Hotel!

I will start by saying that the Refinery is our favorite place to stay while in the city. However, it lost it's luster for us this time. I will start by saying that the Refinery is our favorite place to stay while in the city. However, it lost it's luster for us this time. I guess we must blame covid, because the energy we'd come to love just wasn't there during this stay. We got a great deal, but it seemed there were very few staying there at all. We knew housekeeping and concierge would be by request, but those are the ones that have made our trips so special in the past. The room was fantastic, as we've stayed in the Atelier Suite before. There is a lack of garbage receptacles, only a small one in the bathroom. We had to request some garbage bags and extra towels during our stay. The toiletries were not as nice, or plentiful, as in the past. The beds and linens were lovely. The lack of options, Parker & Quinn and Winnies, were missed, but we did have great food and service at the rooftop one afternoon. I'm hoping as time goes on that more services will be offered and the restaurant and lounge will reopen. The Refinery really is one of the best boutique hotels in the city and we will return. The room was perfect and exactly as advertised. It was clean and well kept. All furniture was intact. Unfortunately I received terrible service from start to finish. Our room keys often stopped working in the middle of our stay. On more than one occasion we were locked out of our room. The housekeeping staff and the front desk staff were not on the same page as we were being “pushed out” 2 hours prematurely even though we paid for a late checkout. We had to request each piece of linen separately, first towels, then wash clothes. Majority of the staff members did not acknowledge the presence of myself and my family as we passed throughout the hotel. When booking your stay, take into consideration whether you plan to be 100 percent self sufficient because the environment is more like an apartment building than a hotel. Read less
