Image of the Tripadvisor rating Central Location Shines Amidst Outdated Interiors, Lackluster Service and Expensive Pricetag

One of the worst Ritz Carlton hotel we have stayed. Hotel room interiors are outdated, service is lacking, room service food is bad and front desk were unwelcoming. Its saving grace is the location to Central Park and shopping belt. That's about it. For the price it is charging, we can find much better hotels else.

We came from Australia and was willing to pay the exorbitated amount of money to have a view of the thanks giving day parade and partial view of the park. It cost us 20,000 US so imaging what it cost Australian. While we readily accepted that it appeared that it would cost a lot it was the comparison to staying at the Goring in London that shocked us. 12 dollars to get a cup of tea. We would have expected at least free cups of tea. They were there thanks giving morning and that was the end of it and you had to go to the lobby to get it. For that money you should at least get tea / coffee making facilities in your room. Breakfast was extra. We did get plenty of water and on some nights a chocolate others not. We started to feel a bit bitter about the cost and then tipping on top. The staff were very nice but we didnt get the initial interaction we expected for what we paid. At the Goring we were greeted with sitting in the lounge area with tea and cake (no charge) and were waited on and greeted with asking if we had any needs whereas here we have had no interactions as to our needs other than from the ladies turning down the beds. The cost at the Goring for real British high class hotel was substantially less. Its a great location but not worth that amount of money. The room is beautiful, the staff nice but management just want too much for the bit you get. Read less

Location: Good location for many nearby attractions and of course to Central Park. The Room: A high floor, park view room was reserved and I can confirm it’s a nice view of the park if that is important to you. If you want a view that is what you need to reserve because based on the floor map there are only 5 rooms out of 15 on the floor that directly face the park, so they won’t just give you one. Make sure you really want to pay for the view because most people are out of the hotel except to sleep. All else is sort of standard Ritz in terms of decor. There were three closets and a safe. A fairly large washroom with shower and tub. It’s somewhat of a letdown that almost everything has to be asked for separately. Do you want a clock radio? Do you want a coffee maker? Do you want tea or a kettle? Do you need body lotion? And so on. You need to ask for quite a few things that other Ritz locations that understand service give you to promote a delightful stay. Noise: They say windows are soundproof, but they are not. You can hear car horns, sirens etc. but it is expected in NYC. What you don’t hear much of is hall noise which is good. Facilities: If you have stayed in other luxury hotels you might be disappointed when you arrive. A small lobby with a small lounge separated by a drape. No pool. Supposed to be a spa. A nice workout facility though with a separate yoga studio. A very small business work room. Badge up to your floor for security is required. Restaurant vs room service: Tried both and I prefer room service which is usually not the case. Although there appears to be enough staff, service is not always attentive and food delivery is leisurely. Room service comes within 10 to 20 minutes after placing a call. No need to decide the night before. The same gratuity is automatically applied to your bill. Room service is polite and accurate. Service: Housekeeping and room service staff is very good. There seems to be inconsistent door and security staff. Transportation: There is a complementary hotel car that does short trips, but if it exists, I never saw it. Take Uber if you need a ride. I was also in a taxi and the driver was reckless and I had to fiddle with payment electronically in the end, so I don’t recommend a taxi. If you are offered alternative SUVs waiting outside the hotel, use caution. Sometimes you might be offered one by the hotel for a very short trip and believe it’s a hotel courtesy, but I have it on good authority that you might be put into an uncomfortable and dangerous position whereby you are pressured to meet an unspoken payment amount that you never agreed to. When I heard this, I would say that the hotel has an obligation to not only ensure drivers are vetted, but to pay them a retainer if the Ritz wants them to simply wait. It would help them manage their financial pressure of their vehicles, and to help promote or arrange their services maybe via the concierge should patrons feel the occasion to ride in these bloated vehicles. Overall: I understand that NYC has 33,000 hotel rooms to fill every night. I am not sure the Ritz does enough to prevent customers from wanting to try another (luxury) hotel. Read less

Staff service was excellent , everyone was very kind and welcoming. The doormen were on it. I did not even have to open/close the entrance door once while going in and out of the hotel. My double queen room was on the 22nd floor, nice and quiet. Shout out to Diana Heysun for adding the lovely note and chocolate cake in the room to acknowledge my mother’s birthday. She loved every minute and glad that I chose this hotel for her. I will definitely be returning to this property. Read less
