The pros are: Good location, good size rooms, generally clean, quick rectification of issues, polite staff especially the doorman. Cons: Awful double glazing which was drafty and left you at the mercy of the New York chaotic traffic so sleeping was a challenge, very thin walls so if the traffic didn't get you the room next door would, also all the hotel seems to slam loudly for some particular reason, the whole place lacked atmosphere, no facilities for food/drinks, air conditioning only provided heat so do not touch unless you wish for a hot stuffy room as windows are screwed shut. As we stayed for only 4 nights it was bearable but would definitely not return. Read less

We couldn't fault it at all, a lovely comfy room and with comfy beds to go back to after a full day exploring was just what we needed. I'd messaged the hotel before hand as my son is autistic and will only eat cheese sandwich's and needed to check if there was a fridge in the room as we hadn't booked one with a kitchenette. There was a fridge and a large desk area that I could easily prepare his food on, and then he could sit in a chair to eat rather than just on the bed as we've had in other hotels. Check in was easy, the staff were really friendly and helpful, we arrived in the early hours of the morning after the flight from hell, and I was able to sit in the reception area with my son while my husband checked us in, everyone was super friendly and compassionate about how exhausted we were. When it came to checking out, we were able to store our bags and then a lovely gentleman sorted out a taxi for us to get back to the airport, it was a last minute decision to get a taxi as we had previously said we'd get the subway to the airport. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone was really helpful and friendly. If we ever come back to New York, we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Thank you so much to everyone we encounted during our stay, Read less

We spent two weeks in this extremely comfortable, homey old hotel in neighborhood Murray Hill. The room was wonderfully large by NY standards, had a desk--essential for us as we tend to work even when on vacation-- and a huge reading chair that I could turn around to face the window for morning reading while my husband slept in. Everything we needed for a long stay was here--card-operated guest laundry in the basement, two treats when you came in after a day of sightseeing, the front desk had everything I'd forgotten at home. Super accommodating. It was an older hotel but didn't feel fusty, the room was SUPER quiet though it had a refrigerator. The bathroom was large and scrupulously clean. A very comfortable lobby lounge where people seemed to order food delivered to the hotel and then eat there instead of eating in the room (I hate eating in the room, ugh). Stunning how reasonably priced it was, and how quiet! Except for 8:30 a.m. when the housekeepers started using the surrounding linen closets--our room (309) with a courtyard view was absolutely quiet. (We did end up putting a sign on the door to keep the housekeepers from chatting outside our door and banging the linen cabinets in the morning.) I do recommend the courtyard view--it was a view of trees and other New York buildings, green and beautiful. We were offered an upgrade to a one bedroom suite with a view of the Empire State building upon arriving, for a mere extra $50 a night, but at 12 nights had to turn it down. Don't know how noisy Lexington would have been. It's not right adjacent to a subway stop, though the bus stops right across the street. We tended to use the subway at Grand Central, four very short blocks away, which has all the lines, escalators and an elevator--handicapped accessible, a food hall "marketplace" as well as a full food court underneath. The neighborhood is well-supplied with small restaurants and bars, not a super trendy neighborhood which is okay with us, you can still walk in without reservations. Read less

I’ve stayed at the Shelbourne before the Sonesta group took the hotel over and it wasn’t a great experience then and hasn’t gotten any better in the two years since they acquired the property. Everything is outdated and the rooms are generally in disrepair and are dirty. Our shower had no shampoo, conditioner or body soap. The towels were damp and musty. The light switches didn’t work in the bedroom area and the sink leaked. They also had a giant crane servicing the building starting at 6AM on a Saturday. The air horns and crew started screaming at 6:05AM. They charge a crazy resort fee and it isn't transparent. The woman at the front desk was unfriendly and unhelpful. She said she would email a receipt and I never received it. While the rooms are spacious and the location is great, you’ll leave feeling like you need to take another shower. There are many hotels in this neighborhood, I’d suggest exploring before settling for this location. Read less
