Arlo SoHo

Soho and Tribeca, New York

The hotel

Is there anywhere better for shopping than Manhattan? You’d be hard pushed to find so. And if shopping is your reason to visit New York, then this is a great base to do so. Branding themselves as a ‘micro’ boutique, the Arlo SoHo offers far more than this. The rooms are designed to be compact, but trendy, just like the neighbourhood it sits in. The communal library turns from a chilled place to check your emails, and read a book by day, to a buzz of conversation, board games, and chilled drinks as the evening comes in. And if it’s a nice day, why not move out to the courtyard with your refreshments, although you also don’t want to miss the views from the rooftop bar as the sun is lowering and the NYC lights come alive. The rooms are effortlessly cool, with a homely feel, and will have you rejuvenated for another day of hitting the shops or walking by the Hudson.

This is my 2nd time staying at Arlo Soho, and my third time at one of Arlo hotel brand. I was thinking of trying a new hotel, but the comfort and the interior design I previously experienced at Arlo was unforgettable and I thought it will remain consistent. However, for this time, I noticed a lot of different things. I'm sorry if I am being a little Karen. I will be transparent here by pointing out the good things I experienced and the not-so-good things. 1) Price: The price point did increase with incidental deposit and a bunch of resort fee/ urban fee (after check out is when they charge you for the urban fee) / taxes & fee as usual. I thought the increased price tag would improve some of the pre-existing services. But honestly, nothing has changed much. 2) Check-in process: From my previous memory, I remember Arlo Hotel has an automatic check in. All you need is give the front desk your passport, and you verify and check in by just pressing a button on the touch-screen. I didn't see it this time. Yeah sure having a person-to-person check in is more interactive. But I thought having a contactless experience also speeds up the check in process. I had to give credits to the front desk guy for helping me to check into my room earlier than 3pm though and thank housekeeping services so much for preparing the room so quickly! While waiting for the check-in, I sat down in the library room of Arlo. It still feels the same, very Scandinavian design and cozy. However, there were stacks of excessive chairs sat by the corner of the room and it triggers the Marie Kondo in me. 3) The room: Arlo Hotel changes the brand of their amenities. Even though, they have operated for quiet a long time, nothing has changed much about their amenities, even more minimal I'd say (no toothbrush, toothpaste, Q-tips). This is not a complain, but I also wish the bedroom smells as nice as the lobby. 4) Music at night: Based on my loose memories, I didn't remember Arlo Hotel blasts the music that loud. It's probably because I had a courtyard view room this time, so the music from the rooftop is non-stop until 11am. I never had a headache when I stayed in any hotel before. But this time I did. I just slightly complained to the front desk guy and he told me the music would stop really soon and if anything, he offered me tea. That was really nice of the front desk. But i mean for a hefty price tag at Arlo, at least provide earbuds for free or just insulate your rooftop bars/ bedrooms a little better. 5) Restaurant - Lindens: I remember few years ago, I had a breakfast buffet at the hotel's restaurant for 24 dollars or less. The buffet was so great and the food looks expensive and worth the price tag. But this time around, I ordered a two-egg omelette with plant based cheddar and it was nothing special for its 14$. Hey, at least, provide some bread on the side or some salad/veggies on the side. Another funny thing happened here is that I didn't know sparkling water was charged for 9$ and they give you the full bottle. The sparkling water wasn't on the menu and the menu didn't state anywhere that sparkling water option comes with full bottle. When the waitress asks me what options for water I want to choose, she was being so casual "Do you want tap water, sparkling water, or something else ?". I honestly didn't mind to pay 9$. But what bothers me is hotel like Arlo that tries to assimilate themselves as hip and sustainable has mini tricks to get money off their guests pocket. The fact that the waitress was sort of rude to us in the beginning, by seating us by a turbine that has loud noises and hot air coming out where there are plenty of seats elsewhere, by telling us condescendingly "let me tell you what... no restaurants ever offer sparkling water for free. It's an obvious thing." Sure, I'm sorry my country pumpkin didn't know that. But I think the way she approaches it can be different. Considering there are not a lot of people in the restaurant at that time, it surprises me how she treats us. Sure you can say that this hotel is only for well-off people with hip vibes. But back in the days, when I was a broke college student, I try to save money and look forward for my next stay at Arlo. It was my dream in college to be able to afford a nice hotel in New York. Now, having a 9-5, I feel sad that I came to realization that Arlo is not worth it. Read less

ArloSoho is a beautiful place, everyone is so nice here and it was a pleasure being here. And even if you are not sleeping there the restaurant and the rooftop are quite stunning. Thank you so much ArloSoho !

I was very disappointed at the state of the room - such as black duct tape around furniture? At a 4-Star Hotel? Even the trash can was bothering me and that was the least problematic item, I was getting annoyed that I even got annoyed with that. I was very disappointed at the state of the room - such as black duct tape around furniture? At a 4-Star Hotel? Even the trash can was bothering me and that was the least problematic item, I was getting annoyed that I even got annoyed with that. But I can ignore that but the main issue was that the bathroom door wouldn’t stay closed and no one came to fix it like promised. No one followed up. I found hair in the shower as if they rushed to clean and we didn’t get to check in almost an hour after check-in time. It was just the lack of attention to detail. Still, I have to give credit where they’re due. I loved the terrace, it was such a vibe and their restaurants are very good. Also, Lobby Host Marcus C. was the best and I’m glad I got to meet him at least towards the end of my stay, because he really saved the experience for me personally. He was the most friendly and welcoming employee that I interacted with at the front desk. Read less

Great location and amazing staff! Rooftop bar is very cool and lots of space (also quiet space) on G and 1st floor for work. Superfast wifi helps. As does 24hr coffee and snacks in the reception. Breakfast (brunch) served only on weekends but their recommended Maman- cafe is absolutely fantastic.

Big shoutout to Moises, one of the managers of the hotel for his 5-star service, he was extremely helpful when asking about recommendations and activities in the area. Next time I’m in NYC, I’ll definitely come back to Arlo SoHo! Read less
