Soho Grand Hotel

I can't say enough about the hospitality here. In a world where automated messaging services have taken over front desks and help desks, this experience was a reminder of why human connection is so vital! From the time I called in and spoke with Marcus, it changed my entire perspective and experience of hotels. He greeted me on the phone with such great energy–so much that it set the tone for not just the day, but the weekend I was going to have with my girlfriends to celebrate a bachelorette. He was personable, attentive, and accommodating, beyond anything I expected. When I arrived at the hotel, we greeted each other with such a big hug! It was as if we had been long-time friends. I don’t usually write reviews, but feel it is necessary and hope it helps someone from being mislead about this “over 4 star” hotel. Upon late arrival, we had a poor first impression of the hotel. The doorman did not assist us with our luggage and the heavy doors, and the hotel entrance was filled with empty glasses left on top of the the concierge desk and staircase/railings. I had informed the hotel that my husband and I would be arriving for a late night check in. A day prior to our arrival, I had also spoken with the concierge about organizing an in room surprise for my husband with a Magnolia cake that I had delivered. He had informed me that he would have it in our room with a candle on it. When we arrived to the hotel, the front desk was empty and the lounge was very busy. When the front desk attendant appeared, he checked us in and then handed me the surprise cake in front of my husband in a bag. There was no surprise for him as I had requested and the front desk attendant was very dismissive when I questioned it. We had also read that we would receive a glass of champagne upon check in and that was not accurate. I asked the front desk person if we were given a high floor or if there was a possibility of an upgrade. He said yes that it was given to us already. Upon entering our room, seeing the location of our room (733), and the view, it was clear that that was yet another dismissive comment. The hallways are very dimly lit and carpets need renovating. The standard King room is very small even for NYC standards for the price, and there are barely any bathroom toiletries offered. One positive note is that the room was clean. If you are considering parking, the hotel offers valet. However, our car was left in front of the hotel with the windows down for 45 minutes, and then left for another two hours without being taken by valet to park. We know this as fact as we had left the hotel for a late dinner, and came back only to see our car still parked in front (and not close to the curb). Note: not a luxe car. The hotel seems to have a very attractive nightlife to the 20-30 year old crowd. We are in our late 30s and were laughably ignored upon trying to gain access to the Club room for a drink. It was just like the SNL skits trying to get into NYC’s “hottest” club. Instead of paying for a table (the choice offered), we went to the “Grand” Bar for a drink where the bar and lounge area was filled with people, empty glasses, and empty straws and napkins all over the floor. For the amount of money spent on this hotel, and if you are looking for an upscale and nightlife experience, please look elsewhere. The quality is severely lacking and I am deeply surprised that this hotel is reviewed as over 4 stars. Read less
