The hotel

A taste of elite New York living, the residential feel of The New York EDITION sets it apart from your average Manhattan hotel. Inside an historic clocktower, near the Flatiron building and Madison Square Park, its grand interiors are swathed in neutral, warm, ivory and oatmeal. The elegant guestrooms are just as decadent, featuring oversized windows, rain showers, complimentary WiFi, 48” HDTVs, and BEATS Bluetooth speakers. Its spa is reserved exclusively for hotel guests, but there’s no keeping New York’s gastro-aficionados from The Clocktower: with Michelin starred Jason Atherton at the helm, its classic-meets-contemporary British menu is served in three exquisite dining rooms (and the Lobby Bar). The centrepiece of the dining experience is the Gold Bar, with its gilt-framed photos, 3 foot globe chandelier, glistening cocktails, and 24k gold leaf bar ensuring it lives up to its name.

Background: As seasoned New Yorkers who've called downtown home for over a decade, we decided it was time for a staycation in a different Manhattan neighborhood. Our quest led us to the NoMad / Flatiron area, where the Edition caught our eye with its surprisingly reasonable rates compared to its high-end Bonvoy counterparts. Skeptical, we delved into Tripadvisor reviews, only to find a mix of recent opinions. Despite this, fond memories of a positive experience at the Miami Edition nudged us to give the New York Edition a try--albeit with managed expectations. Experience: We arrived at the Edition around 6 pm on a serene Saturday evening, devoid of the usual weekday office hustle. Stepping into the hotel, we were greeted by the Edition's signature scent, moody lighting, high ceilings, and a chic blend of white furniture and dark wood elements. At the front desk, we met Eric, whose charm and warmth instantly put us at ease. Before we even handed over my driver's license, a manager emerged from the back office with a bag of Edition doggie treats for our 13 year old Shih Tzu. "I saw you come in with your dog on the cameras and thought she'd enjoy these," she said. Well, Edition, you now have our full attention! Eric breezed through our check-in, offering extra water and a dog bed, though we were content to head straight to our room. Upon opening the door, we were delighted to find a spacious, beautifully designed room with all the signature Edition touches. However, there was a minor hiccup: the windows were partially obscured by the building's historical facade. Not a deal-breaker, but my partner suggested we try for a different room with better views. We sheepishly returned to Eric, expecting a quick denial. Instead, Eric called over his colleague Eli, and together they found us a new room. A few minutes later, Eli assured us, "You'll be happy with this room!" He escorted us back to our original room to grab our luggage before showing us to our new room. Eli was right--the new room boasted jaw-dropping views over Madison Square Park and the Flatiron Building. From there, it was all smooth sailing. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through Madison Square Park and dined at one of our favorite nearby restaurants. After dinner, we were eager to return to our room and relax. We ran into Eli again in the lobby and thanked him for his help earlier. Not letting us leave empty-handed, he gifted us an Edition candle as a memento. It's these small touches from caring staff that make all the difference! Back in our room, we settled into bed, gazing out at the night sky and admiring the classic vaulted ceiling. The comfortable bedding made it feel like a true home away from home. A heartfelt thank you to Eli, Eric, and the entire Edition staff for making our stay so memorable. We'll definitely be back! Thermostat is set on energy efficient at night. This is untenable during a NYC heatwave. I woke up 3x a night in a sweat with the temperature at 74 degrees and humid given the temperature outside. They did not tell you that the AC goes into energy saving mode when you sleep. You have to be “moving” for the AC to activate! The hotel should make this clear before someone books in the summer and also at check in. They had to manually turn off the energy save mode on night 3 of my stay. Needless to say I only got 3 hours of sleep a night for for the 1st 2 days. Nothing can make up for this. I would not stay here again during the summer. Read less

This past year, I stayed at the Edition three times. For two of my visits, I stayed at least a week. While the laundry and cleaning staff have always been very friendly, the front desk has always been haughty and lukewarm. But because of the location (it is central to many subway lines), I decided to stay here several times. The very first time I stayed here (2019, I think), the rooms were well-maintained. Last year, I noticed that the rooms were showing their age. Yet I chose to ignore that and decided to still stay here three times this year. But this will be my last time here. Why? The air conditioning in my room was horrible! They sent the AC person to check my unit. All he did was change the direction of the vent and tell me that he was going to switch off the “Auto” mechanism in the thermostat. He also said that he was going to switch me to “VIP” mode. The AC did get slightly cooler but only intermittently. Worse, at night the room temperature was 74 F. Ideal room temperature for sleep is between 60-66 F!!! Why include a thermostat in the room when you can’t even control it? And “VIP” status only when one complains? During a heat wave? Horrible. Read less

This is a 4 star property charing 5 star prices. If you're temped to go for the Bonvoy reward amenities, don't bother. The location is convenient, but the rooms are small. This is a 4 star property charing 5 star prices. If you're temped to go for the Bonvoy reward amenities, don't bother. The location is convenient, but the rooms are small. The bathroom is like a holiday inn. The room service is inedible. The service team is not trained. Here is the deal.. If you want five star, book the Ritz or Regent in Bonvoy. There the staff is trained in the ritz tradition of ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen. Here it is like McDonalds. If you want cheaper, book a noce $300-400 dollar room. The room was $600-$900. The problems.. smelly, no upgrade as promised, packages delivery (such as food, etc) is a hot mess. Everyone in NYC orders door dash. Your packages will disappear into "security", but there is no "security" and they will not notify you or the front desk that you have a package. 3 hours later, you're looking for your package. What package? I was told after 2 days to call the store and tell them the package was missing, because they wanted to blame the door dash delivery person, who has a GPS and timely receipt. As a Bonvoy elite, I'm told $40 per day at the spa, laundry, room service and mini bar each. I used $42 one day. Yep, I got a $2 overcharge, despite not using any credit the rest of the day. All of this would be fine at a medium priced Marriott. But, this hotel is trying to compete in the 5 star category and it is not there. Maybe if you're stay is free, it might be worth it It's middle eart. Read less
