The hotel

Historic brick grittiness meets creature comforts at this turn-of-the-century building. On the National Register of Historic Places – and the Gold Rush map – Alexis Hotel won a Condé Nast Traveler People’s Choice Award in 2015. Its downtown location puts you between Pike Place and Pioneer Square, each a few blocks away, with free morning tea and coffee before you head out (and a free wine hour when you return). The 24-hour gym’s anything but historic, winning Shape magazine’s award for ‘most fun’ hotel gym. And its popular Bookstore Bar & Café is as cosy as it sounds: book-covered brick walls and views of bustling 1st Avenue set the scene from brunch to late-night dining, with dishes by award-winning TV chef Caprial Pence, and an incredible rare whiskey selection.

Last July, my wife and I spent a night at the Alexis hotel before heading north to Canada. As Kimpton fans and frequent visitors to Seattle, we’d always wanted to try the Alexis given it’s location, consistently high rankings, and general vibe. In short, we were glad we did: our stay was excellent, service was friendly, and we loved taking advantage of their Kimpton perks! The Alexis is conveniently located near in downtown, only a short walk from Pike Place, Seattle Art Museum, and Pioneer Place. From Seattle airport, it's about a 20 minute ride (without traffic), or a slightly longer 45 minutes on LINK light rail. Check-in was friendly and efficient, and as it was summer time, we were able to use the Kimpton secret word to unlock a complimentary bottle of wine! Our room was large, featuring a comfortable sofa, large bed, excellent work space, and eclectic decor. A nice surprise was a small welcome treat (as it was my wife's birthday), which paired nicely with our welcome treat and 'raid-the-minibar coupon' given to IHG members. As with other Kimpton hotels, the hotels offers a social hour between 5 and 6. Hosted in their lobby, a selection of small snacks, wine, and sparkling water were on offer for guests. While we just caught the end of the hour, it was clear guests appreciated it and it made for a nice environment in the lobby. In short, the Alexis was a great place to spend the night. Having stayed at the Kimpton Palladium our previous visit, rooms at the Alexis were definitely larger and the social hour more fun, although the Palladium might be worth considering if you're looking for a more modern vibe. Stranded downtown in unexpected Seattle flurries with my dog in tow, the Alexis saved the day! Not only were they able to accommodate the last minute booking with a lenient pet policy, but even had a pet bed/bowls in my room upon arrival and added my pup's name to their board of VIPs (Very Important Pets). They even managed to produce a bag of dog food so I didn't have to venture out and brave the cold! The staff kept an upbeat friendly demeanor despite the unpleasant weather and helped turn a last minute booking into a lifelong memory. Read less

The bartenders and wait staff always smiled and seemed to enjoy each other and their customers. There's no reason you shouldn't book your stay here. What are you waiting for? Read less

Beautiful, intimate and high quality hotel in Waterfront district. An excellent example of Kimpton Hotel approach, relaxed and with a good vibe however not allowing style or hype to overtake service and quality. Very nice bar and restaurant attached which feel integral to hotel without dominating the lobby experience, with very good drinks, prices and staff. The most memorable element of the stay however were the staff we interacted with. Primarily Evan, who was manning reception when we arrived and concierge when we departed. Evan made us feel incredibly welcomed despite our late arrival, and offered a truly professional service on departure organising an SUV etc for our extensive luggage. We stayed in 2 Fireplace suites for a little bit of luxury to end our long journey to the Arctic. With such a wonderful welcome, and an absolutely beautiful room - what could go wrong? Why is this not a 5 star review? Frankly, if it hadn’t been for Evan this would have been a 1 star review, due to the continued noise and vibration in our room which made sleep impossible and left us exhausted for the entire stay. All,of the fireplace suites are in a corner next to the lift. All of the beds are on the wall next to the noise. Out top floor suite (422) was obviously also next to the mechanics at the top of the lift shaft and continued all through the night. Sleep has to be central to any hotel offer. The Alexis management clearly knew our room was a problem, however continue to sell it - saying only people who were light sleepers were particularly bothered by the noise. We had to take sleeping tablets to be able to sleep on our second night as the hotels only offer was a down graded room or another below where we where which would have had the same problems. We would stay here again, if only to see the delightful Evan again, however not in a fireplace suite. Please management address the noise issue - it can be sorted through insulation or remodelling the room and moving the bed away from the noisiest location. Read less
