I booked a room for $300. The hotel added additional fees and taxes. I am fine with taxes, however, the Urban Experience Fee (which goes to the hotel), effectively increased my cost by $33 - the fee was not referenced in the booking until the end of the payment process (or via a "Pricing Details" link). The fee covers amenities such as pool access, internet, etc. (access to which I would consider part of the room rate as the hotel states this is a "mandatory" fee. The more progressive hotel chains have moved away from this type of deceptive pricing. While the total cost of circa $330 plus taxes and city fees is not a problem - the way in which it is presented to the customer is offensive. I cancelled my reservation and rebooked at the Grand Hyatt (Hyatt has done away with "resort fees"). Fairmont should stand behind its product with pride and integrity. If you are going to sell me a room for $333 - tell me up front and with clarity. One only need to read Condé Nast, the NYT, and other publications to understand this type of pricing is a problem for the consumer. It is no wonder our government has made an issue of this as well - one of the few bi-partisan efforts is a "crack down on hidden resort fees" (NBC). Fairmont - really? So easy to do it right... We stay at the Fairmont Olympic with our 10-year-old and 6-year-old one or two times a year. Here is the good and the bad from this year's stay over Thanksgiving. Arrival: I booked a Signature junior suite room (higher floor and certain amenities). We checked in and were given a handicap/ADA room on the 9th floor (not one of the "higher floors"). I went through the room and my reservation email to confirm this was not what we had booked. Rather than unwinding with my family after traveling, I went back to the front desk to clear up the issue and it appeared that room type was overbooked. This was very frustrating because it appears I was intentionally assigned the ADA room (which is much more affordable than the room we booked) with hopes I would not complain. Had I not complained we would have been charged for the signature room but would have been staying in the ADA room. The clerk said she was sorry for the confusion, and that was it. We were assigned the room I had booked and we had to go back to get our things and change rooms. This was disappointing. It should have been handled by offering something (cookies for the kids, 2 free drinks, or something as a gesture to make up for my time) Valet: Day 2 we had reservations at noon in Bellvue. I had spoke to the door man at 930 and asked that our car be out front at 1100 AM so we would not be late. The Bellman questioned the request and said, "that is an hour and a half from now." I said yes but we are giving them a heads up so it is there at 1100. He checked my ticket and told me he would inform the valet. We arrived at 1050 or so. I asked about the car and the valet had no idea that we requested the car early. He said it would be 20 minutes. The car finally arrived at 1142, almost a full hour after we requested it. The George: We had Thanksgiving dinner there. The service and food were incredible. They were booked by the time I tried to make a reservation. I initially emailed the concierge and the restaurant email and was ghosted. I emailed again a week or so later and they were very apologetic for ghosting me and they put us on the waitlist. A few days later they were able to get us a table which was great. Hot Tub and Pool: Pool is great for families. Last year they had it filled in so it has a very shallow end and is only about 4 foot deep at its deepest point. The water temperature in the pool is warm enough. The jacuzzi (Not a Hot tub) is just a few degrees warmer than the pool. It is not a hot tub. This has been a consistent issue for years. We would hope they would turn up the thermostat 5 or 10 degrees which would make a big difference. The seating lobby area near the bar: There is an incredible library space off of the lobby where we usually will have drinks and dessert. On Saturday we tried to order hot chocolate for the kids and were curtly informed by the server "There are no hot drinks." We asked about hot chocolate and were informed " We are out of hot chocolate." This seemed odd to us. I assume the bartenders were slammed and did not want to take the time to make the drinks. The server appeared frazzled and disinterested. The bellman and housekeeping: Aside from messing up the valet issue, the bellman was great. Housekeeping was also awesome. They did a great job. The Room and Hotel: The signature junior suite did not disappoint. I am not sure I would spend the extra money on it again. Especially knowing that I still may get stuck in a regular suite even if I booked a signature suite. The hotel is magnificent and was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Check out: Went very smoothly. My All Accor points from this stay still have not shown in my account, but the process was smooth. Overall: Management should take an introspective look at themselves and look at what they are doing wrong that is resulting in a great hotel, but a mediocre guest experience. I rarely write reviews, but we love the Fairmont and want to continue to stay there. However, for the first time in years, we questioned whether we should stay someplace else. Read less

The staff at the Fairmont Olympic makes every stay here wonderful. They are friendly, professional, and always go out of their way to make things great. Our room was sparkling and comfortable, and our meals at George were memorable. Go there for brunch!
