In town to see the eclipse. The Thompson Austin is a great center of operations, close to everything. The Arriba Abajo bar on the fourth was the perfect viewing location. Very cool bartenders Ozzie and Jyl make perfect cocktails and good conversation. Rooms are very nice (we stayed on the Thompson side rather than the more casual Tommy side).

Every time I stay at a Thompson I always end up get screwed (scroll down to previous reviews) but this property takes the cake! I really have nothing good to say about this hotel so let’s dive into everything that went wrong. First, the rooms. The rooms are on some weird sensor system so all the power (and air conditioning) will turn off after 20 minutes if there’s no motion, so prepare to wake up multiple times throughout the night sweating to death, as well as being left in the dark while taking a shower. Once off, the power can only be turned back on from a master switch next to the front door. And about those showers, there’s no glass door so the bathroom gets soaked, and the water pressure is nonexistent (I have more water pressure!). The shower dial was falling out of the wall and the handle fell off every time I tried to use it. Also good to note is the bathroom door is not a proper door, but a sliding barn door, and of course the lock was broken so the door just slides back open since the rails are installed incorrectly… no privacy whatsoever. And all of this for $800+/night. Next let’s discuss the hotel. Most important to note is that this hotel is actually two in one, a cheaper Tommie concept and the Thompson, which share elevators, hallways and common areas. Logistical nightmare to say the least. The pool is shaded for most of the afternoon and not heated so don’t plan on swimming either. And that’s if you can get a seat, there aren’t nearly enough for all the guests, and the pool staff will just rudely tell you to leave. We had to move to the patio area instead, where we waited over an hour just to get menus, despite asking different waiters three times to be served. It was another thirty minutes to be able to place our order, every time we asked someone for help they said they’d send someone. And the place was empty, we were literally the only people sitting on the whole patio. When someone finally came, they didn’t apologize and just said flippantly “we just assumed you had already been served.” What kind of a comment is that?! Ordered a cocktail and their $9 guacamole, which was the saddest excuse for guacamole I’ve ever seen in my life. Barely enough for two chips, and it was mostly cut down with green salsa so it looks like guacamole but isn’t. We complained and waiter rolled his eyes, and we never saw him again. After waiting another 30 minutes I was over it and I had to walk around 10 minutes before I could find someone to close out our bill, everyone too busy on their phones to do their job and the person checking me out says “don’t you know who your server is? They should be doing this.” Don’t you think if I knew who my server was and he was doing his job, I’d ask him for the bill?! The disappointment continues for breakfast, where an $18 fruit plate includes half a handful of berries (see photo). This just feels like an insult. Lastly, upon coming back from the gym, I entered my room to find someone else inside, despite having the do not disturb sign on. He said he was just checking the minibar, but that is unbelievably unacceptable, especially with all my jewelry and electronics sitting out. Couldn’t leave fast enough and would leave zero stars if I could. Do NOT stay here! Read less

The Thompson Austin is located near restaurants and bars. The hotel has a few dining options as well. The staff was friendly and helpful. Even though the hotel is located downtown, we stayed in a room that offered a quiet atmosphere at night. I would definitely stay again.

My only complaint about the property was housekeeping constantly kicking on the door asking if they could clean the room. If there was a Do Not Disturb sign, it would have solved the problem. During my recent stay at Thomson Austin, I encountered some disappointing issues that impacted my overall experience. Firstly, the pool was not heated, which was quite inconvenient as I had expected to enjoy it during my stay, the pool should be heated so that guest can enjoy it no matter the season. What made matters worse was the inconsistent and conflicting responses I received from three different employees regarding the reason for the pool not being heated. One said the heater was broken and you all were working on getting it fixed, and one of the front desk employees stated you guys did not had a heated pool. Had i known this, i would of stayed at a different hotel to celebrate my Birthday. Additionally, I noticed that the carpets in my room were dirty. This was a noticeable flaw that affected the overall cleanliness and comfort of the space. It is important for the hotel to maintain high standards of cleanliness to ensure a pleasant stay for guests. Sleeping here is almost impossible, you can hear everyone who walks or talks loud on the hallway. Another thing to add, some of the staff from Arriba abajo were rude and no one came to serve us at the pool, we had to go to the bar. Furthermore, upon checking out, I had some questions that I needed assistance with. However, I was met with a sense of annoyance and impatience from some of the front desk employees. One staff member even put me on hold and never returned to the call, resulting in a dropped connection. This lack of professionalism and disregard for customer service left a negative impression on me. In conclusion, my experience at Thomson Austin was marred by inconsistent service and maintenance issues. Improvements in communication, cleanliness, and customer service are necessary to ensure a satisfactory stay for guests. Read less
