I arrived, unpacked and went out to handle the business I was in town for. I returned to my room, went to shower and realized there were two clearly used washcloths hanging from the shower rod. This hotel had supposedly reduced their available rooms due to COVID-19. One would think the reduction in guests would allow a greater focus on the occupied rooms. The explanation I received was that there must have been a misunderstanding with housekeeping and they marked the room clean when it wasn’t. Either this was is a disgusting and dangerous mistake, or a dangerous and disgusting lie. When other properties are ramping up their sanitation, this is unacceptable! Please don’t stay here! Your health is too important to leave it to the lazy staff at this hotel. They moved me to a different room and comped the night. I couldn’t wait to leave. On top of the most glaring strike against this place, the security lock was broken, dust was on everything, there was gunk all over the remote, and the headboard was peeling terribly. This is nowhere near a “luxury” hotel. Read less

I was on my way to the Houston airport when I realized that I was going to need emergency eye surgery, which left me stranded in Houston for more than a week while I recuperated and returned to the doctor frequently (all went well medically). So this became my home-away-from-home for a while, and it worked out great. The room was very nice, my hotels.com reservations got me free full breakfasts (very good buffet in their high-end restaurant), and the location worked out great for me as I could walk to many nearby bars and restaurants (could've shopped 'til I dropped, too, but I restrained myself). The whole property is attractive and perfectly maintained. It was not inexpensive on the weekdays--this seems to be mostly a business hotel--but I got great deals on the weekends. The highlight, though, was the staff. I tended to be in the room at the times that they do most of the housekeeping, but when I would leave the property for a couple of hours in the afternoons I always came back to a perfectly made-up room (without even calling to ask for service). For some reason the bar didn't have an ideal ambiance for my taste, but everyone I encountered there and in the dining room was friendly, professional, and eager to ensure that I was happy with everything. I ordered room service once and my dinner came unusually quickly and it was delicious. The valet guys were super-helpful. The front desk was the best of all. When I arrived early they let me check in and apologized that they didn't have a high floor for me (which wasn't a problem). I extended my stay twice, using hotels.com each time, and they seamlessly and cheerfully kept me in the same room--in fact they offered me a room upgrade but it was easier just to stay where I was. I left my key and my ID in my room one time and both the front desk and the security person took care of me promptly and warmly. I requested a late check-out and they seemed happy to offer me two extra hours. When I did check out I realized I had left something crucial in the safe and they were great about re-making my key and letting me go get what I had forgotten. In other words, everyone there was just as nice and helpful as they could possibly have been. I really didn't know the Sonesta brand but based on this experience I would happily try it again. Surprised my wife with a quick get away. Room was nice with an excellent view of the city. Service from the staff was very commendable with the exception of one valet attendant who was extremely rude. He was of African descent and after notifying the hotel manager I was comp'ed my valet charge.

The Royal Sonesta is a great place. Erica is a great bartender - attentive to all. Michael & Tougkan are great as well. I have a great appreciation for the level of customer service they can provide. Kudos to them & the Sonesta!
