Phoenix Park Hotel

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

Its stately setting on Capitol Hill is just the start of the ‘grandeur’ you can expect at Phoenix Park Hotel. An historic property that’s been treated to a $8 million makeover, it has all the sharp styling you’d expect from a hotel right at the heart of this modern metropolis, just a block from Union Station and a stroll from the top sights and shopping. The splendour starts the minute you step inside, with its elegant lobby dressed in mossy greens, uplifting blues, and the sparkle of its shimmering floor, chandeliers, and gold-daubed sweeping staircase. The dining here is more rousing than refined though – with its snug Irish pub, The Dubliner, outfitted with bottle-green walls and emerald leather bar stools, and bringing you all the classics, including fish and chips, Irish Beef Stew, Guinness, and even the odd Irish ‘jig’.

The hotel location was perfect for the group. Rooms were immaculate and staff very accommodating. The group enjoyed their stay and completely fit the luxury type hotel they were looking for. Will definitely go back and look forward to future opportunities to go back.

Due to the COVID restrictions, most of DC was closed, including all the wonderful restaurants and Smithsonian. The Irish Pub at the Phoenix Park Hotel was 100% closed as well; not even room service was available. We survived on DoorDash delivering our meals with mixed results. The Front Desk Staff was top notch and helpful when needed. The hotel itself is located across the street from Union Station where the DC METRO can be caught to take you wherever one needs to go, or close enough. My only complaint is the Housekeeping Staff. Due to COVID, the rooms were NOT serviced during the entire stay. You receive the room clean and set-up, but if new towels or sheets are needed, you must call to have them delivered and take it from there on your own. That is not such a huge deal, just the times we live in. The part that is completely unacceptable is the noise created by the Housekeeping Staff. At 3:00am, someone from Housekeeping was emptying trash cans in the hallway and/or in vacant rooms. They were noisy, slamming down the bottom heavy trash cans, moving side tables around, etc. Then at 7:00am, the cleaning crew came to service vacant rooms. The doors come with a latch at eye level so the door can be cracked open but still secure, like most hotel rooms. This housekeeper opened the door and moved the latch over to keep the door from closing/locking, while they worked to service the room. The doors are spring loaded to always close shut. The housekeeper would open the door to walk in, then let the door swing closed, banging into the latch, so it would bounce three times with loud "booms". They must have gone in and out a good 20-30 times. Simply putting a towel on the floor would have kept it from making all that noise. Being from the West Coast, that was 4:00am to our sleep schedule; not good when on vacation. When I brought this up to the front desk staff when checking out, they apologized, but said "When someone has been doing this for 30-years, old habits are hard to break. They do supply them with door wedges to keep the doors wide open while working, but they eventually go back to their old ways." For this reason alone, I will not be returning to the Phoenix Park Hotel until such time the housekeeping staff is replaced with trained, considerate people that know customer service makes or breaks a business. I will look for another hotel that is close by, as this location was awesome for the 'on foot' traveler, visiting the DC Mall area. I beg the owner to please consider giving the housekeeping staff an ultimatum of doing their job right, or they can be replaced. There was no excuse for this to happen. We'll be back to DC when COVID is over and all of DC is opened up 100%. Read less
