Galley Bay Resort & Spa

Antigua, Caribbean

Virgin rating

The hotel

Set on one of Antigua's many beautiful beaches, the Galley Bay Resort & Spa offers guests a fabulous combination of superior service, Caribbean cuisine and rustic luxury in a very natural setting. Much of the architecture here is inspired by the French artist Gauguin. The charming individual suites have their own splash pool and are surrounded by lush gardens and views of the lagoon. There are three excellent open-air restaurants, all beachfront, offering intimate, candlelit dining of excellent quality. Ismay's Restaurant offers a higher quality dining experience to be shared for that special occasion, whilst the more laid-back Barefoot Grill is a great place to enjoy a tasty quesadilla made with resort grown produce. At sunset, hors d'oeuvres are served at the bar which overlooks the sea from under its Tahitian-style roof. There are activities such as non-motorised water sports and a recently expanded gym, but reclining with a novel on the beachfront deck from the library is equally as popular.

Great place - overall, I would recommend and come back - but a couple of disappointments. Here is the run-down of our stay: - Beyond gorgeous view and location. The water does come very close to the chairs and units. This was fine for us as there are assigned loungers/umbrellas and you don't have to move them. In general, though, the waves are big and the water is often to choppy or aggressive to get in safely. This also affects the ability to kayak or do paddle boards. It is not a "chill" waterfront, where you can wade and enjoy a float. - If quiet is what you are looking for, this is your place. I'd say the median age during our stay was around 60 years old. Some middle-agers like us, but not many. It trended towards older than us - for some, this may matter socially. We enjoyed it as everyone is generally pleasant, quiet, and very respectful. Young adults may find the property to be "too quiet." (Although she had a great time, our 20-year-old daughter seemed a bit bored at times and possibly felt a bit out of place.) It is tough to please everyone with the right offerings and activities. - Incredible food and drink for an all-inclusive. The chefs take pride in what they do. Accommodations were made when my daughter needed a plate to go - they made the food and wrapped it for us to take. We really enjoyed the coffee shop being open all day and they had great snacks/treats each day. The beach service for drinks is really one just person and underwhelming. They could use at least one more attendant to walk around more often -- or implement a flag service for "as needed" drinks, like other resorts have. - Housekeeping was excellent. The refrigerator re-stock staff for beverages was great. - Amenities had a couple of oddities. Linens are definitely not 5-star level. There are not extra towels - you have to ask one person, along with one hand towel and washcloth. So, women have to ask for an extra for the hair towel. The towels aren't in great shape - they could stand to be replaced more often. There is not an actual duvet or comforter. There is only a waffle knit thin blanket on the beds (the kind that are usually an added insert between the sheet and duvet back in the States). So, you have to ask for extra blankets to have the equivalent of a duvet-thick top layer. Vanity items are not re-stocked, so if you use the one makeup cloth on the first day, that's it. No more. The shampoo, gel and lotion are in larger "community" bottles - less sanitary than individual bottles. I am not a fan of going 2 or 3-star level with community bottles at an expensive resort. A lot of the amenity situation felt like the resort was trying to save money and cut back. This is not a good look for a 5-star. - The poor lady (one person!) at the Guest Services desk gets overwhelmed. There was almost always a line for people trying to get needs met, and the phone rings off the hook from those in their rooms also having needs. At other resorts, we have always had an assigned concierge or butler to take care of this capacity, rather than the whole resort standing in line at a desk with one person. (But, when we were working with her, she did everything she could to handle requests one by one. We didn't have much during the week - just the birthday plans and trying to set up a sunset sail with Captain Shawn). - Speaking of Captain Shawn...if the boat is full, ask him or the desk to contact you if others cancel. This was the case for us, and we were able to jump in where someone else cancelled. - While some reviews have had glowing reports about the service, I would say that our week-long stay was much more spotty with friendly/capable attendants. There was a lot of inconsistency in attitude and execution. Asking for extra sauce might take 10 minutes and a reminder. There were some expressionless/not friendly staff, which was a surprise to us, at both Seagrape and Gaugin. The exception was the wait staff at Ismays (however, there is a $50 per head surcharge and the service is clearly more attentive there). For example, the Gaugin Restaurant forgot/misplaced our daughter's 20th birthday cake ($30 extra FYI), and the staff had no idea that it was her birthday -- so, it wasn't just the cake -- t was a fail all around. It was so awkward when they came around with dessert menus as this cake was to be a surprise for her. I had also requested balloons and those did not happen either. This was after confirming the plans twice. Guest services had also confirmed on their end. I was beyond disappointed about this. BUT, she did receive a lovely plate of fruit and some flower petals in her room. The resort has a "no cash" policy for tipping, and so the staff seems underwhelmed with their jobs. I am guessing pay is not great -- this is generally the case when staff seem lackluster. It is not transparent how the staff is compensated by leaving additional gratuity at the front desk at the end of the trip. How is it split up? I understand the premise behind making a resort "no cash" and trying to split up tips, but it generally doesn't pan out, and it is evident in staff attitudes. - The pool is "OK," not great for a 5-star property. It could use a face-lift and modernization. Overall, we had a great week, and would recommend to others as a "good" stay. The highlight is the location and the food. I don't know that we would invest in another $17,000 stay here, though. Read less

We have been to Galley Bay twice. (Once in May 2023 and March 2024) Both times were absolutely perfection. The property is so beautiful and well thought out. From the minute you step out of the cab from the airport the staff is there to make you feel relaxed and ready to vacation. They get you started with a rum punch and an easy check in process. From there you are given a short ride in a golf cart to your room to settle in. Our room had a spacious bathroom with plenty of space to hang damp items, a double shower, and double sinks. It had a King size bed, couch and love seat seating area and a generous balcony with lounge/sunning chairs. Every room has a fridge that is stocked with some beverages and restocked every morning. One of my favorite things on property is that every room has its own reserved lounge chairs on the beach with your room number. No running down the beach to “save” your seats before breakfast at this resort! They also have a great pool area close to the bar and a lunch spot. They have a water feature at the pool with quiet music. Perfect if you don’t want to swim in the ocean or the tide is too rough that day. A silly little thing that I absolutely adore…they give you a metal, insulated bottle in your room at check in and have “Rehydration Stations” around the property to make sure you get enough cold water all day. As someone who loves to be hydrated I think this is so clever and I love having constant access to water! There are many options for meals at the resort. And all are excellent. I truly didn't have one “bad” meal. Or even bad course! They even excel at the “small things” like daily soups and their breakfast. Every restaurant on property changes their menu daily so you never tire of options. (The only meal that doesn’t change their menu is the breakfast at Seagrape. But the menu is so diverse, it’s never boring to eat the same menu! Think fresh fruit, cheeses, meats and juices. A different pancake of the day, Eggs Benedict, Roti with eggs, Omelets, etc) They are really great at having plenty of meat, seafood, and vegetarian options at every restaurant and every meal. And one of my favorite things about the chefs at GB is that they treat the veggies as good as the proteins. They are truly great to stand alone. (I often grabbed the extra veggies off my hubby’s plate if he didn’t finish them.) Gauguin is great for semi-private dining both for lunch and dinner. We had lunch there several times this past visit and it was a nice break in our day with a starter, main, and dessert. Plus a romantic, semi- private seating area means you get to be cozy with your person. Ismay’s is great for a special occasion or to just enjoy the elevated extravagance. They are determined to show you a great time. And it shows! The property is also well thought out for walkways, plants and vegetation. I spend half my time taking photos of the view and beautiful flowers on the paths. Make sure to check out the Turtle Sanctuary if you like turtles. They have a few tucked away to say hi to! One of the things you notice if you get the opportunity to travel to GB more than once is you recognize a lot of the staff. Many of them have been at the property for years. Some more than 20! That shows what a special place it is. All the staff seems to want you to have a relaxing, special time and they go out of their way to make your experience wonderful. We can not wait to visit again next year. We are already planning our trip. Read less

Galley Bay is as the majority of reviews state a little bit of paradise. There are many returners (and although relative newbies) we have after our 4th visit joined that group. The majority of rooms have a magical beach front location with a few overlooking the lake. The standard ones which are a good size have a large (possibly 8ft) very comfortable bed, walk in wardrobe with iron and ironing board and a spacious bathroom. There is a terrace front and back and you are lulled to sleep every night by the sound of crashing waves. As others have pointed out the sea can be rough at the resort and on our 4 visits there have been more red flags than any other colour. That said the pool area is pleasant and quiet with comfortable sun beds and umbrellas. A few people have made negative comments about the dress code as it requests a certain standard. It is only in the evening and personally the fact most guests make a real effort is refreshing and makes it feel a special occasion. All restaurants are waiter service which adds to a feeling of calm, with the food possibly the best and most consistent of all the all inclusive resorts we have stayed in. The wine for me is the only disappointing area. If you are a red wine drinker you are fine with 3 choices, white, 2 choices, however if you are a rose drinker there is only one which is verging on the sweet side. I mentioned it last year and again this year and the Customer Services Manager Cedric did his very best to assist with a positive result all but a couple of nights. Cedric’s words were ‘if you don’t tell us what is wrong, we cannot put it right’. I am hoping that for other guests the big bosses (who in our experience have very little interactions with guests) might listen. Staff are in the main very good with 2 or 3 that are certainly worth a mention. Riza, Denita, Stuart, and Natasha who went out of their way to make sure our experience was as near as perfect as possible. Huge thanks though to Cedric who does an amazing job of balancing many plates to ensure his guests are kept happy. Read less

First time to Galley Bay Resort ( and to Antigua) and will not be our last! We arrived after a trouble free experience at the airport and were greeted with a cold drink at reception. We were two couples and had requested the upper rooms on the beach front premium rooms and they delivered. The rooms were updated, bright, clean and with high ceilings and a spacious bathroom. Nice large patio a stones throw to the ocean...could listen to the waves all night! One of the nicest rooms I have had at a resort! The fridge was stocked daily and house keeping was 10 out of 10! Beach was spectacular and we had assigned palapa and loungers which was very nice. Never had to worry about a spot on the beach. We did have a couple of red flag days but still swimmable. The guys at watersports were very informative friendly and a pleasure to deal with...and they were funny! The food was great, most produce coming from their own gardens and meals always felt fresh. We tried all the restaurants including Ismay's which is a $50 upcharge. Meal and setting were nice but not sure it was worth the money. Sea Grape restaurant for breakfast was always delicious and always had a pancake of the day...coconut was my fav! Staff in the restaurants not always the friendliest but always great service. To be honest my favorite meals were at the barefoot grill! Women behind the grill always extremely friendly and the food was soooo good. Curry Chicken Quesada with a fresh garden salad was tough to beat and also loved the burgers !! Guest services was always available and rarely a line up and have to say Bri was so friendly and so helpful, she was the start of the resort in my opinion. The gym was ok...nice size but could use another treadmill. Yoga was offered Monday to Friday in the nicest Yoga studio ever! a raised platform on the ocean. Mackenzie offered a great class and was gentle on the not so flexible. She is so nice and just had a chill vibe... we did the Captain Sean excursion which was informative, relaxing and the food was better than the Keg in Winnipeg!! Always felt safe and he gave us the lowdown on other resorts and we passed by them and enjoyed snorkeling and the sailing! All in all I would highly recommend this resort and will definitely be back!! Read less

From the moment we arrived to be greeted with a rum punch and checked in, until the sad day we checked out we had a wonderful time here. Staying here we were completely relaxed and de-stressed so quickly after a challenging year for us. We had a premium beach front suite, it was beautiful, spacious and well equipped. Apparently these had been refurbished relatively recently, the bathroom particularly was great with a large walk in shower area. The rest of the suite was really nice. The view from the suite across the beach and listening to the sound of the waves at night was so relaxing. The regularly re-stocked mini bar was a bonus and we were never lacking for a drink. There was the one time that the re-stock of beer never arrived, but it led to a laugh with our neighbours on the sunbeds when he shared a couple of beers with me, he said he hadn't ordered any but they had arrived at his suite! It turns out they were mine. All the staff were friendly and worked really hard to ensure we had a great stay. They ranged from the ultra friendly/can't do enough type of people (which were the majority) down to a few who weren't quite so friendly, but even these few were never rude and worked hard. There were some stand out staff who made the stay so easy for us. Even staff who weren't usually customer facing, like the housekeeping team and the many gardeners were all keen to greet you with a smile and a good morning. There was a manager's cocktail hour where we got to meet the team which was a nice touch. One of the staff we accidentally bumped into whilst cycling round the resort was the gardener in charge of the fruit and veg growing on site - we thought we had ventured into a staff only area by mistake, but he quickly waved us over, welcoming us and started a conversation, proudly showing us the produce growing in his fields. He was clearly passionate about his job and was rightly proud to show us, also educating us along the way. We had a pleasant time walking round learning about the gardens and he even helped my wife's bug bites with some fresh Aloe Vera. Guest services were always really helpful. We managed yoga every weekday, except the one day we couldn't book on because it was so full but 7 out of a possible 8 weekdays wasn't bad. Both my wife and I really enjoyed it as a start to the day, the classes were very beginner friendly (good for me) and Mackenzie was mindful of the range of abilities/experience in the class. She gave us an energising yet relaxing way to start our days. The food here was really good. Let's start with Ismay's, the special restaurant which needs booking and a small extra fee of $50 pp. The food here was AMAZING, it was a really special night and worth the extra fee. We really liked the staff recommendations to accompany our meals. The next up is the Gauguin restaurant, this also needs booking for evening meals but not for lunch and there's no extra fee. The setting is wonderful whether it's an evening meal by candlelight or a lunchtime meal with views over the beach and bay. The food was great, everything we ate we loved. 3 times we paid a small extra fee for lobster - this was well worth it, it was some of the biggest and best tasting lobster I have had. Barefoot grill - we didn't think we'd use a 'fast food' type grill, but we did and we were glad we did. A couple of times we just wanted a simple snack, not a full blown meal. We loved the catch of the day grills, they were so tasty, fresh and easy along with the tuna press. The coffee shop had great opening hours, it was popular not just for the coffee but also for a regularly changing variety of really good ice cream and fresh cookies! Seagrape was the 'standard' restaurant, no booking required and where breakfast, lunch and evening meals were served. But there was nothing standard here, the staff were friendly and the food was all freshly cooked to order and we never had a bad meal. No buffet here, except the fruit, pastries and similar for breakfast. Either pancakes or freshly cooked omelettes were our favourites. Lunch and dinner had regularly changing menus and everything we tried was tasty. On the Thursday there was the Caribbean barbeque - which was wonderful. Again the only buffet was the salad, vegetables, rice etc. The suckling pig and the freshly grilled fish, ribs, chicken and steak were all really nice. It's a shame that our 10 day stay meant we only got to have it once! Bars - we never waited long for a drink, it's such a small resort and the bar staff were friendly and efficient. We must have tried every type of cocktail on the list, but often we were happy with a simple rum punch or a beer (and the odd bucks fizz in the morning!). The rum shack was a cool way to sample a range of rums for me. Staff did come along the beach a couple of times a day offering drinks, it wasn't a lot but it did save us the few minutes walk along the beach to the bar a few times. It really was no drama to stroll along and get a drink. Dress code was very relaxed through the day, whether in the bar or the restaurants. After 6.30 it was a smart casual affair, simply long trousers and collared shirts for men and dresses for the ladies, but we liked this, making a proper evening of it. Entertainment was good every night, often quite easy listening but the acts were all very talented with some guest dancing most nights. The resort as a whole was very tidy, well maintained and looked after. Work on keeping the gardens beautiful seemed constant and the resort clearly puts lots of effort into the beautiful surroundings. We never used the pool, preferring the beach right outside our room - it looked like a lovely area but sheltered from the breeze of the beach. We had a lovely couples massage together in the spa. My wife, who is a beauty therapist who does massages herself, said her male therapist gave one of the best massages she's ever had. Having cycles available free to use was a nice touch. We only used them once and to be honest don't expect new bikes, they were simple, free and easy to use to tour around the resort. There were some days when the red flag prevented use of the watersport equipment, probably half our 10 day stay but this really didn't cause us any drama. We made use of the free beach shuttle one day, with one of the watersports team accompanying us to Deep Water Bay. We did try both the SUP and a double kayak on blue flag days and these were fun. There was some good snorkelling with masks and snorkles provided in our room. Even when there was a red flag the sea was ok for dipping into when hot from the sun, with the average see temp being 26 Celsius! Perhaps if your main aim is using the watersports equipment or swimming then the fairly regular red flag conditions might cause you a problem, but honestly it had little or no impact on our stay, I was still in the water every single day and my wife most days. Our only criticisms - and these are very minor - are as follows: The Gauguin restaurant had 2 sittings, an early and a late. Having a late meal meant missing most of the entertainment, but trying to book in for an early sitting was impossible for us, with all the slots apparently booked by 7.30am! It could only be booked a day in advance so we never got the chance for anything but the later slots. Perhaps they should consider a slight change to allow people who haven't been able to get an early slot to book farther ahead as it seemed to be the same people getting the early slot every time. I know we could have tried earlier but we were on holiday and getting up in time for 8am yoga was hard enough work! The housekeeping staff did a really good job of cleaning the suite, including sweeping the patio, but we would have welcomed some sort of brush to be able to sweep it ourselves again later in the day after we had dragged more sand onto it. Bugs. We hadn't noticed them particularly at the time but both of us suffered bad bug bites in the first 24 hours - our fault really as we hadn't applied the bug repellent we had brought, not noticing the sand flies until after they had done the damage. Once we started using the repellent we were ok, but make sure you take it and use it. That's about all we can think of, none of that spoiled our trip. In summary we had an amazing holiday trip, we will absolutely return again. We had been to Antigua 6 years previously in a different hotel, we love the island but Galley Bay is hands down one of the best experiences we have had, having travelled far and wide. I can see why they have so many return guests, whilst we like to explore different places and can't see us being one of the guests they get returning for a tenth or fifteenth time - we will certainly return and can see us returning more than once! We are a well-travelled married couple in our fifties! Read less
