The hotel

Cape Town has plenty to offer when it comes to sightseeing, and The Commodore is perfectly placed for you to enjoy the V&A waterfront, Table Mountain, and Robben Island with ease. Upgrade to an Executive room to make the most of the views from your balcony on the top floor, or even to a King Suite if you want the extra space for your stay. The nautical theme runs throughout the hotel, from your room right through to the bar and restaurant, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and local wines. As you’re in the heart of the harbour, you don’t have to go far to find more restaurants and bars either, where you can while away sunny evenings in the oldest working harbour in South Africa.

I stayed in this hotel twice. First time on my own (April). I had a standard room which looked dated. I had internet issues on arrival as none of the codes we were given worked. Same with my friend who also had internet issues. When connected the internet was OK not particularly fast. Breakfast was excellent. Second time (May) on the trip I stayed with my wife, and we had a suite. We both had the same internet issues again when code would not work and ended up giving phone to reception who went into the system and corrected the codes and entered same on both our phones. What a difference - a beautiful room and aspect, beautifully refurbished so bright compared to the tired looking standard room I stayed in previously. Nespresso machine and good selection of teas. Comfortable bed and good size TV. AC worked well. I would strongly recommend asking for a refurbished standard room or book a suite. I would have given 5 stars if our initial room had have been a refurbished one. Read less

The breakfast buffet had a nice mix of hot items, eggs to order, pastries, fruit, etc. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, helping us resolve a tour issue and always welcoming us back with a smile. The hotel is well situated and presents itself as upmarket. It is in that it falls short. First though, the check in was good if annoying still being very manual while they can easily collect this information easily before hand. The concierge parking is a nice touch. I found the room overall good, but the beds, pillows and way the bed was made not very comfortable. It felt low quality duvet and sheets, but maybe that’s me. Nice shower and tv facilities with a desk to work at. Staff are friendly, sometimes overly ambitious in their desire to serve. During breakfast I was on a call and was interrupted asking about additional coffee. Best intentions, but execution was a bit agitating. Then, I asked to accommodate a check out 1 hour later but this was not allowed. Can understand maybe they had allocated the room but honestly, I don’t think this is an over booked hotel with all rooms sold out. No alternate was made and when I was five minutes late I was being called and people waiting outside the door. Again, appreciate they need the room - but help me find a solution or maybe allocate another room. Overall it also felt a bit dated. Not sure I’ll be back. Read less

This is a really nice hotel in a perfect location! It was a great way to end a vacation after nine days in tented camps in Botswana and Zimbabwe, and I found the service to be impeccable. The rooms were spotless with comfortable beds, a coffee bar and refrigerator, and everything that we could've possibly wanted. We use the laundry service and I found it to be reasonably priced and our clothes were returned hours later and beautifully pressed. a buffet breakfast is provided to all guests and it was fabulous! Huge selection of super fresh foods, an omelette station, and excellent service. We also had dinner in the Clipper restaurant two nights in a row and had and were very happy with our selections. We really enjoyed the two nights that we spent at the Commodore and would definitely stay again if we return to Cape Town. Read less
