The Portswood

Cape Town, South Africa

The hotel

Linking location and legendary history, The Portswood is more than a hotel – it’s the full Cape Town experience. Part of the city’s history, it’s built around the original holding cells for prisoners destined for Robben Island 300 years ago. Today the address is more coveted – and the guests more enthusiastic – thanks to its brilliant spot in the V&A Waterfront, just a few minutes stroll from its famous dining, drinking, and entertainment scene. This fashionable location is a perfect base for exploring the rest of Cape Town. The PortsWood comes with its own attractions too, including chic cosmopolitan styling, an outdoor pool, the elegant Quarter Kitchen Restaurant & Cocktail Bar featuring a Cape Malay menu, and a terrace offering light meals and tipples from the Links Bar.

This is a very comfortable hotel with truly great breakfasts. Visit the nearby Watershed for amazing works by craftspeople and artisans. It is close to the waterfront for access to many shops and restaurants.

Good location for the waterfront .Impressed by cleanliness .This was the final hotel on a golf tour and booked for us by tour operator so not our selection .We were here for 5 nights .Initially we were disappointed as bed small and hotel noisy. We had to switch off the fridge from the wall as it made an intermittent din that prevented us sleeping at night .Air conditioning unit ancient and very loud when on .Bedroom doors do not close quietly so disturbance early morning and at night from other guests. However we were comfortable and the front of house staff were excellent. The breakfast staff lacked continuity , one team good and another team slow and not especially efficient . Top tip - leave do not disturb sign on door at night as housekeeping knocking on door at 8.30 am . Read less

A couple of friends stayed at the Portswood hotel after travelling to Cape town on the Blue train. Wonderful location within easy walking distance of the Waterfront. Breakfast was of good quality and very well presented. Rooms comfortable with everything you need. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

Stayed here in October 2019, and was not disappointed. I landed on my feet. First, the basics. Stayed here in October 2019, and was not disappointed. I landed on my feet. First, the basics. It's in the V&A waterfront, so ideally located for the shopping, eating, and tourist activities the waterfront offers. But it is safe. As a first time visitor to Cape Town, I'd heard various reports about street safety. The waterfront in its entirety seems to be owned by a company. It is like a safe zone in Cape Town. Every 50m or so, there is a security guard. The concerns other contributors have expressed about tourist areas like Long Street don't apply here, even at night. It's also close to the aquarium, and the hop on, hop off bus terminal. Some rooms have partial views of table mountain. I found the staff universally polite, and helpful. I had two different rooms at different times. Both were spacious and clean, with no intrusive noise. Wifi worked faultlessly. The rooms each had one South African 3 pin power point, and one UK-style 3 pin power point, so I didn't need an adapter. The breakfast is comprehensive, with eggs and omelettes cooked to order, and fully-stocked hot and cold buffets, bread and fruit. The PortsWood was recommended by a Capetonian travel agent, and I would definitely stay there again. Read less

We recently spent 4 nights and the PortsWood Hotel with a group of people. We had a wonderful stay thanks to the lovely staff at the hotel. Nothing was ever a trouble, we were met with smiles each day and the staff were very accommodating! The location is perfect - close to V&A Waterfront which has plenty of places to eat and drink. We felt very safe walking around. The restaurant at the hotel is delicious and very reasonably priced. A special note to Shirley from the hospitality team, she certainly looked after our family very well. We would also like to note the recommendations on travel companies were fantastic! Illios Travel (Philip & Tracy) and Morkel Travel (Orion) were great - we would highly recommend tours with them! Thanks PortsWood Hotel, we hope to be back! Read less
