The Portswood

Cape Town, South Africa

The hotel

Linking location and legendary history, The PortsWood is more than a hotel – it’s the full Cape Town experience. Part of the city’s history, it’s built around the original holding cells for prisoners destined for Robben Island 300 years ago. Today the address is more coveted – and the guests more enthusiastic – thanks to its brilliant spot in the V&A Waterfront, just a few minutes stroll from its famous dining, drinking, and entertainment scene. This fashionable location is a perfect base for exploring the rest of Cape Town. The PortsWood comes with its own attractions too, including chic cosmopolitan styling, an outdoor pool, the elegant Quarter Kitchen Restaurant & Cocktail Bar featuring a Cape Malay menu, and a terrace offering light meals and tipples from the Links Bar.

This is a very good hotel without being exceptional. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable, the bathrooms are large (lovely hot shower!) with toiletries supplied. The public areas areas are good with bar.lounge, good breakfast area with a good buffet breakfast (including an omelette chef) and lots of choice. My only issue was a bit of noise, we were on the first floor near the open mezzanine and could hear the phone ringing at the reception desk. The location is great, 5 minutes walk to the V&A waterfront with lots of restaurants and bars, and 5-10 minutes walk in the other direction to some less touristy eateries. Read less

Perfect location close to V&A Waterfront and the hop on / hop off bus. Rooms fairly standard - nothing exciting to report Breakfast excellent with plenty of choice. I left my phone here - handed in by housekeeping and reception organised it to be couriered to my next hotel. Very happy with their help.

Spent a few nights visiting friends in Cape Town. First impressions were good but rooms were disappointing given the prices. Great breakfast and very attentive staff but rooms are small and cramped for 4 star hotel.

Stayed six nights here with my husband. The location is great for exploring the V&A Waterfront. It's also only about a three minute walk to the city hop on and off bus for additional exploring. We loved the location for all our sight seeing needs. The hotel was also able to call us a cab the few times we wanted to go to a place not within walking… Read more

We loved the location for all our sight seeing needs. The hotel was also able to call us a cab the few times we wanted to go to a place not within walking distance. The staff was very attentive and our room was very clean. The including breakfast was enjoyable but for a longer stay like ours perhaps a little boring six days in a room but there are a lot of options! I'm just a picky water. Read less

Great location only minutes from the great V&A waterfront. Room is comfortable and clean. Nice turndown touch too. Breakfast room is not huge but has a wide range. Very attentive staff too. Only one lift but a low rise Hotel so no issues.
