The Portswood

Cape Town, South Africa

The hotel

Linking location and legendary history, The PortsWood is more than a hotel – it’s the full Cape Town experience. Part of the city’s history, it’s built around the original holding cells for prisoners destined for Robben Island 300 years ago. Today the address is more coveted – and the guests more enthusiastic – thanks to its brilliant spot in the V&A Waterfront, just a few minutes stroll from its famous dining, drinking, and entertainment scene. This fashionable location is a perfect base for exploring the rest of Cape Town. The PortsWood comes with its own attractions too, including chic cosmopolitan styling, an outdoor pool, the elegant Quarter Kitchen Restaurant & Cocktail Bar featuring a Cape Malay menu, and a terrace offering light meals and tipples from the Links Bar.

The breakfast was good with a nice selection. One weird thing: we ordered spaghetti bolognese and found out quickly that it was curried. We like curries, but when we order Italian food, curry is too much of a surprise. What made this special was the location. It is just a 5 minute walk to the V&A waterfront mall. We ate a couple of times at the food court. We road the Ferris wheel. We took a sunset cruise. What an experience! Read less

We enjoyed our stay at the Portswood. The staff were attentive and very friendly. The service was great. The food was of good quality with a generous breakfast included. The hotel itself comfortable and homely. It’s proximity to the city and V and A is a bonus. Recommended hotel for mid range travellers.

Enjoyed four nights here, along with five other friends, during a recent vacation to Cape Town. There were a few glitches - Despite prior reservations indicating the need for two rooms with two beds and two rooms with one bed, we had problems in this area but to the credit of the front desk staff, they were quickly ironed out. A lady in the bar area was unable to figure out how to provide separate checks so we could bill our rooms, so if you're with several people, be prepared... Both the travel desk and later the staff at the front desk of the hotel tried to bill us for airport transfers that had already been paid for. As opposed to them checking their records, I was asked to show them a prior email I had received from the travel desk to get this resolved. Be watchful when you check out here. On the plus side, our rooms were clean, nicely appointed and the beds very comfortable. We had some trouble using their computers but the staff were helpful in their efforts to get them working. The food was very good - breakfast in particular was tasty. Their drinks were also quite good. Location is excellent in terms of walking to the Waterfront. Read less
