The hotel

Linking location and legendary history, The PortsWood is more than a hotel – it’s the full Cape Town experience. Part of the city’s history, it’s built around the original holding cells for prisoners destined for Robben Island 300 years ago. Today the address is more coveted – and the guests more enthusiastic – thanks to its brilliant spot in the V&A Waterfront, just a few minutes stroll from its famous dining, drinking, and entertainment scene. This fashionable location is a perfect base for exploring the rest of Cape Town. The PortsWood comes with its own attractions too, including chic cosmopolitan styling, an outdoor pool, the elegant Quarter Kitchen Restaurant & Cocktail Bar featuring a Cape Malay menu, and a terrace offering light meals and tipples from the Links Bar.

Staff here couldn’t do more for you, food was good and fresh, suite was beautiful - very spacious and immaculately clean. Only reason not a 5 is because felt they could do more with the pool area. The sister hotel - Commodore - next door - had a more welcoming pool and we went there instead.

It offers excellent value for money in an expensive area of Cape Town for hotels. JThe foyer is spacious and elegant, with a bar a restaurant off. The bedrooms are cleverly designed to give plenty useful space in a relatively small compass. The staff are excellent, efficient and friendly, and the food is good, with tasty buffet breakfasts. This hotel, part of the Legacy, group smacks of care for the guests and attention to detail. Read less

Last year we tried a different hotel, to avoid the daily commute to the CTICC where the annual Investing in Africa / Mining Indaba is held. While it was closer and the rooms bigger, we went back to the Portswood this year - it’s a great hotel, well positioned, friendly staff and a nice breakfast. After explaining that I had to get to an urgent meeting on the day of my arrival, my room was cleaned straight away, and I was able to check in early. Read less
