Hamiltons Tented Camp

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

The hotel

You can sense the romance of the Victorian safari goer when you arrive at this traditional tented camp, with its vintage steamer trunks, sepia photographs, and old-fashioned hurricane lamps. Overlooking Nwaswitsontso River, Hamiltons Tented Camp throws you back into the 19th century, as you sleep beneath the canvas of one of its six elevated tents, nestled among Jackalberry and Sausage trees and linked by timber walkways. Drifting off to the rustles and calls of the bush, your Kruger National Park setting, in a private concession shared with its two sister camps, lets you wake to some of Africa’s most awe-inspiring wildlife walks, game-drives, and bush dining experiences.

The "hardware", i.e. tents, restaurant or living rooms are great. Decorations inspire thoughts of a grand time. The service quality varied a lot: from excellent to mediocre on the same day. The guide was very knowledgeable. When asked, he gave very competent answers. He tried to find the big cats with great enthusiasm. However, he had not been trained well to offer information without being asked. Especially about the less known animals. Read less

Every morning we went out for roughly 3 hours in the safari car and another roughly 3 hours at night. My son said the dinners were the best he had ever had. We arranged a (free) walk one day. The two of us walked for roughly 2 hours with two great guides armed with rifles who took the activity very seriously. The property is next to a watering hole so there are times when we could see as many as 25 elephants from the deck of our room. They helped us celebrate my son’s birthday with a cake. Thanks to our guide (Nick) and the manager (Ben) who took such good care of us on this adventure. There is no Wi-Fi and no cell service but that makes it even better!!!! Read less

Perhaps the best review we can give Hamiltons Tented Camp is having celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary with a 4 night stay this past May, as I write this review we are working on a possible return trip to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary in 2021 - it was that awesome! The tents are luxurious, spacious and very comfortable (we stayed in tent # 1)in a safari style without being pretentious. Although we know this doesn't occur all the time, we were fortunate enough to observe a large herd of Elephants crossing the river right in front of us from the comfort of our tent's outside deck and 2 very comfortable chaise lounge chairs. One morning, we were awoken by some strange noises and observed a lucky Impala escape a pack of wild dogs by swimming across the river! The guests are escorted to their tents each night, and at first I thought this was just part of the ambiance of the camp, but then walking this same path of elevated wooden walkways during the day and seeing Baboons playing in the trees and Impala's and Kudo's wandering around the area, one could not help but get the feeling you're right in the middle of everything, which is what I think a lot of people want in a safari camp short of staying in seasonal tents on the plains of Kenya. On our last night, we enjoyed a BOMA dinner in front of the main tent, and as we were eating, our guide and tracker Nick shined his flashlight across the brush to illuminate a hungry and curious Hyena pacing back in forth just beyond the torches. The main tent is perfect, with comfortable chairs and sofa's and a combination of old world British and African decor. The food was spectacular and the GIn and Tonics were a perfect way to lounge away the cool winter evenings reminiscing the days game drives. The main tent is very open and airy and exactly what I would imagine a retro safari camp should look and feel like - elegant, comfortable and inviting! Our game drives were spectacular - we saw everything multiple times including the elusive Leopard and a new born Lion cub. Our guide and tracker Nick was absolutely amazing and we not only appreciated his knowledge of the animals and the park in general, but also the conversations and stories during sun-downers and at dinner our last night. He made our drives truly memorable! Finally, the staff - what can we say that hasn't already been expressed in so many previous reviews. For us, it's easy to remember the aesthetic beauty of a place, and Hamiltons Tented Camp checks all the boxes, but when you visit a place as beautiful as Kruger Park and Hamiltons Tented Camp and find yourself remembering the staff who made everything so special more than anything else, that's saying something. Take a bow Hamiltons staff, you deserve it and you are all amazing! Thank you for treating us like family and for making our wedding anniversary so special! Read less

Hamiltons is truly wonderful. I cannot recommend it more highly. The staff are fantastic; drives are excellent; and the rooms are beautiful. They accommodated all of our special requests and nothing was an issue. Great sightings!
