Hippo Hollow

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

The hotel

With Hippo Hollow’s idyllic location on the banks of the Sabie River it's not unusual to see hippos 'mowing' the grass when you are dining in the waterside restaurant. By day, you'll spot kingfishers and other attractive water birds from thatched garden and river chalets with beautiful garden and pools views. As well as the delights of Kruger, there's much to discover in the area including God's Window and the Blyde River Canyon.

If you wanna visit kruger park choice stay in the HIPPO HOLOW HOTEL. It’s near kruger park gate phanebi. Price it’s good. There are 2 malls near and main restaurants. The employees are the best. My experience was the better.

Great hotel. Staff is very nice. The courtyard (and the game drive) were very impressive. Lunch was great. That didn't apply for dinner. That should be better. Overall it was a nice stay. Would recommend it.

The hotel was lovely. Spacious rooms with a large comfortable bed. Clean and airy. Our room overlooked the courtyard and we were rather envious of the rooms that overlooked the river. However, not a hippo to be seen during our stay despite regular checks whenever possible! Unlucky. The hotel provides packed breakfast/brunches for the pre-dawn safari starts. These were enormous, tasty and were varied to suit, surely, anyone’s tastes. We barely had any time at the hotel as we were on a constant quest to see the wildlife at Kruger, just 10 minutes away. The restaurant buffet was very good quality. Our agreed outstanding experience within the hotel was the local dance evening run on Saturdays. This was beyond expectations - excellent quality and eye-watering acrobatics. The dancers were so energetic it helped us build up an appetite for the follow up buffet just watching. An interesting evening which gave us plenty to talk about. Overall, service was friendly and helpful early in the morning until late at night (late being about 9pm given the 4.30am starts!) Some people in our party relaxed and said that they enjoyed the pool and surroundings. Mainly, though, this place is a base for safari and other outdoor activities which the hotel could help organise if you wished. I strongly advise that you see animals free in the wild rather than at the various ‘sanctuaries’ in the vicinity. Read less

We stayed here for 2 nights with a view on the river. We saw the hippos grazing in the front of our lodge and restaurant. It was amazing. We also saw the elephants. We had a fantastic view from the balcony with real lounge chairs and even a swinging relaxing chair. The lodge was clean and had an extra floor. It was quiet. The people were friendly… Read more

We visited Hippo Hollow restaurant for a morning coffee and ended up staying way longer than expected. Great coffee and cocktails, the atmosphere outside is very relaxing. Thanks Tsepo for taking such great care of us while we had fun watching the elephants playing in the river!
