Hippo Hollow

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

The hotel

With Hippo Hollow’s idyllic location on the banks of the Sabie River it's not unusual to see hippos 'mowing' the grass when you are dining in the waterside restaurant. By day, you'll spot kingfishers and other attractive water birds from thatched garden and river chalets with beautiful garden and pools views. As well as the delights of Kruger, there's much to discover in the area including God's Window and the Blyde River Canyon.

Probably the nicest setting for dinner with the closeness to the Sabie River and the atmosphere. We ate outside and it was lovely. Great time of the year to eat outside as the evening temperature works well. Service good, very nice staff, but the menu a little limited. We had steak which was cooked well and the wine was good. In the past hippos have appeared on the lower lawn which adds to the experience. Would recommend the restaurant experience as it is a very good experience. Make sure you make proper transportation arrangements, if you know Africa you will have no problems there. Read less

The room are in dire need of updating. The 2 pools are not particularly nice and there is no bar service by either of them. The staff seems to be only motivated by tips, which makes the atmosphere unbearable. The check-in procedure was not particularly efficient.

We spent two nights at this lodge as part of our tour. The grounds are attractive, with Egyptian geese and peacocks, but disappointingly no hippos for the duration of our stay, our Kruger safari made up for this with several sightings. The room is adequate for the short amount of time we spent there, although it was a little dark. Wi-fi was excellent, we successfully skyped the UK. A tranquil half day spent by both pools with loungers, hammocks and shady spots refreshed us for the two trips to the park, just around 10 minute drive. There was plenty to please most people during buffet mealtimes, although I think that vegetarians might struggle if they attended the Shangaan evening festival in the grounds, This entertaining evening allowed the more adventurous to try out bushmeat and mopane worms. Service varied in the restaurants but the staff were very friendly and overall it was a pleasant stay. Read less
