Ulusaba Rock Lodge

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

The hotel

Owned by our own Sir Richard Branson, this is one of the most luxurious and exclusive game lodges in the world. It is located amid the breathtaking landscapes of Sabi Sands and combines exceptional service with a superb safari experience - what could be better? If you have a head for heights, stay in the unique Rock Lodge, high above the reserve, where all rooms have beautiful panoramic views and are carved out of the Ulusaba rock itself. For a change of scenery, why not combine your stay with Ulusaba's nearby Safari Lodge, located right in the heart of the bush. Your day starts early with a cup of tea and then it's out to the 4WDs in search of the reserve's exciting creatures. Then it's back to the lodge for a delicious hearty breakfast and a chance to enjoy the impressive leisure facilities. You'll also enjoy an evening safari to spot some different bush creatures, before enjoying a first-class dinner accompanied by excellent wines and occasionally by tribal dancers and singers.

Well this was our 3rd trip to Ulusaba and I have to say it was every bit as good as the other two. When we were met at the airport by our guide, Liam and our tracker, David, we knew immediately that we were going to have the time of our lives. The wealth of knowledge and personal stories that Liam and David shared with us, along with the countless encounters with the animals on our game drives, made this trip better than we ever could have imagined. Staying in Cliff Lodge with our family, we had the most spectacular view from high above the landscape. The staff, Jeannine and our chef, Neil, truly made us feel at home while living in luxury. They accommodated every dietary restriction and shared countless stories as well. We were there over New Years Eve and were treated to a party under tents in the bush, complete with a theme (masquerade) and surprise entertainment - traditional African dances from a local student troupe - great food and such a unique setting. We will never forget it. The fact that Ulusaba had their own airstrip made coming and going a flawless endeavor - just watching Liam and David wave goodbye to us as we took off brought tears to our eyes to have to admit that our time in Africa was over... we'd go back in a second! We stayed 5 nights with our two toddlers. Travelling with kids this age to Kruger made us rather high maintenance guests and we thought the whole team at Rock Lodge did a really exceptional job at giving us all a magical safari holiday. Our ranger and tracker were exceptional, Llane the manager was one of the kindest people we encountered on our holiday, Vickers made evenings always memorable and we would happily have taken Gabriel the chef home in our suitcase as his food was consistently outstanding. Our room was the Rock Suite - we had some issues with cleanliness on check in, noise (the room is next to the car park and the area that the staff hang out), and generally feel like the lodge needs some money spent on it (it’s very dated in parts) in order to have the quality of accommodation match the quality of service. Our rating is a 5 reflecting the service being a 6+ and the accommodation a 3/4. Read less

The experience we had at Ulusaba was phenomenal!! You truly feel that you are visiting a family, our ranger Kyle and tracker Conny, truly cared about our experience and wanted us to love the bush like they do. The food was phenomenal. November is a bit hot but the game drives, the mid morning bush coffee and the sun downers were still amazing. We will definitely be coming back, would love to get a round in at Leopard’s Creek. While Mara will always be a reminder of home, Kruger now also has a special place in my heart. Read less
