Ulusaba Rock Lodge

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

The hotel

Owned by our own Sir Richard Branson, this is one of the most luxurious and exclusive game lodges in the world. It is located amid the breathtaking landscapes of Sabi Sands and combines exceptional service with a superb safari experience - what could be better? If you have a head for heights, stay in the unique Rock Lodge, high above the reserve, where all rooms have beautiful panoramic views and are carved out of the Ulusaba rock itself. For a change of scenery, why not combine your stay with Ulusaba's nearby Safari Lodge, located right in the heart of the bush. Your day starts early with a cup of tea and then it's out to the 4WDs in search of the reserve's exciting creatures. Then it's back to the lodge for a delicious hearty breakfast and a chance to enjoy the impressive leisure facilities. You'll also enjoy an evening safari to spot some different bush creatures, before enjoying a first-class dinner accompanied by excellent wines and occasionally by tribal dancers and singers.

We started off our honeymoon in June with a 3 night stay in Ulusaba Rock Lodge. We were welcomed on the Ulusaba air strip by Kyle and Connie who were our ranger and tracker for our stay. They knew it was our honeymoon and had the champagne waiting for us which was a treat after nearly 18 hours travelling. Up at the lodge we were taken back by the views they were beautiful. We were shown round the lodge and our room and straight out onto a game drive. Within 5 minutes of being down the cliff we had encountered elephants and then came across two leopard cubs. We managed to see the big 5 on more than one occasion which to us felt like we had hit the jackpot. Our game drives were incredible, Kyle and Connie both had amazing knowledge and passion for the wildlife. They both made our game drives interesting and fun. They had so much determination when it came to tracking the animals down. I asked to track down the giraffes one day and they were not where they were usually found, Kyle and Connie spent a fair time trying to track them down, it took a while but we got there eventually and were greeted by 4 beautiful giraffes. Kyle knew the perfect places to have sundowners and watch the sun set and helped us get some incredible photos of the animals. Kyle and Connie were brilliant knowing the animals movements, we followed the lions one morning and they knew exactly where they would be heading… the river. We was able to capture some fantastic moments of the lions coming down the rocks and jumping over the river. Every game drive felt like a new adventure and the three hours flew by. The lodge itself is beautiful and our room was stunning. All the staff know you by name and it really felt like home from home. I don't think I have ever been somewhere on holiday where it felt like we was part of a family. Our preferred drinks would be waiting for us as soon as we got back from our evening game drives and the food throughout our stay was outstanding. We were lucky enough to have a private dinner in the wine cellar one evening which was beautiful and made our honeymoon feel extra special. Our last evening we returned to our lodge which had been filled with scattered rose petals and candles the staff at Ulusaba had literally thought of everything they could to make this trip incredible. I was beyond excited to go on safari for our honeymoon and wanted an experience that I would remember forever. Well Ulusaba not only gave us memories that we will cherish forever they made the start of our honeymoon a dream. My only concern now is that any holiday we go on will not compare to this experience. We were truly so upset to have to say bye to everyone at Ulusaba I think I would have quite happily cancelled the rest of the honeymoon and stayed here. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to return back to Ulusaba one day. Read less

I have actually delayed posting my review as our experience was truly out of this world and I felt that anything I said would not give enough credit for the most incredible experience that we had. We traveled to Ulusaba as the last stop on a 3 week holiday including Namibia and South Africa. We had been to a number of other game parks previously always in the hope of seeing wild dogs. This has been a wish of mine for more than 35 years. Interestingly enough I have also visited several zoos and were never able to see the wild dogs - furthermost corner and sleeping. Ha! Well we had booked 4 days at another park prior to Ulusaba that had 'guaranteed' wild dog sightings. As we excitedly arrived our asked when we would be seeing the wild dogs and was told that they had done to ground 2 weeks prior. My answer - "oh well never mind looks like I have to come back". And then we get to Ulusaba. On arrival we were greeted by our Guide - Stewart - what a legend. He asked us about the rest of our holiday and I told him my wild dog story. Again, never mind. Stewart organised us to freshen up, afternoon tea and lets go on a game drive. We started somewhat faster than you would normally do but Stewart and our tracker Sipo know what they are doing as we bounced along. After about 20 minutes we rounded a corner and there they were - a pack of 11 wild dogs just starting their hunt. We bounced along beside them on the chase for what was an incredible experience until they called off the hunt and we were able to park right beside them while they rested. Thank you Stewart and Sipo - you are both so amazing!! I guess you want to know about the food, service & accommodation - faultless of course. But it is this extra attention to detail that sets Ulusaba apart from anywhere else. Stewart - I am saving to Safari with you again. We hope to see you soon. Read less

This time we had 6 wonderful days with the Ulusaba family, staying in the Rock Suite which is perfect for the 3 of us (couple + 20yo daughter). For our last day we had a very pleasant surprise with a change of scenery to the recently completed Safari Suite (absolutely magnificent). The staff at Ulusaba are brilliant and really make you feel a part of their extended "family". It was wonderful to reconnect with our ranger Stuart and tracker Sipho who showed us some amazing things. The staff at the lodges were equally fantastic and nothing was ever a problem - Vickers, Ben, Patience, Gabriel, Godfrey, Anel, Sandra and everyone else - thank you for a perfect holiday. Read less
