Ulusaba Rock Lodge

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

The hotel

Owned by our own Sir Richard Branson, this is one of the most luxurious and exclusive game lodges in the world. It is located amid the breathtaking landscapes of Sabi Sands and combines exceptional service with a superb safari experience - what could be better? If you have a head for heights, stay in the unique Rock Lodge, high above the reserve, where all rooms have beautiful panoramic views and are carved out of the Ulusaba rock itself. For a change of scenery, why not combine your stay with Ulusaba's nearby Safari Lodge, located right in the heart of the bush. Your day starts early with a cup of tea and then it's out to the 4WDs in search of the reserve's exciting creatures. Then it's back to the lodge for a delicious hearty breakfast and a chance to enjoy the impressive leisure facilities. You'll also enjoy an evening safari to spot some different bush creatures, before enjoying a first-class dinner accompanied by excellent wines and occasionally by tribal dancers and singers.

As returning guests there is always a tiny fear that expectations are set to high, but when it comes to Ulusaba and the team they always manage to exceed any and all expectations over and over again. It is actually difficult to find words - great enough- to describe the amazing, magic and overwhelming experience it is to stay at Ulusaba Rock Lodge and the Game Drives and Busch Adventures they provide for their guest. The Rock Lodge is the most unique place to stay, with eagle views over Sabi Sands and its wilderness activity, the whole lodge and rooms are in absolute mint condition (no sign of lock down) everything is appointed for top comfort and with guests in focus. The service is immaculate and to perfection when it comes to balance personal and relaxed fun with privacy and integrity. Ulusaba is truly above 5-stars in every way possible. Helpful tip; All rooms at Rock Lodge are amazing but staying in one of the Makwela Suits is an absolute dream, the view, the private deck with outdoor shower and plunge pool, the bathrooms…etc etc it is just fabulous. You should absolutely opt for a Makwela suits if available. This time around we had the great pleasure to drive with Brandon and John – the most experienced, skilful and knowledgeable guys that really put their heart and soul into giving us the most incredible game drives with stunning wildlife viewings and lots of laughter and fun too. We love you guys! Read less

We just stayed at Ulusaba Rock Lodge for 3 nights as part of our second South Africa trip. Having been in many exciting places around the world, this stay exceeded our highest expectations. We (especially our 13 year old son) had an AMAZING time while there. The Lodge has a very special atmosphere and spirit. The buildings, the view are impressive but what makes it even more amazing are the people! Everybody we have met represents every day and at any time the attitude of making your stay special. Many places advertise that guests become part of a family but we have never experienced before that each and every person at a resort lives up to this promise. In combination with the stunning views, amazing game drives, wonderful food and drinks we had an unbelievable time. Read less

Now I know what it is like in heaven! This is a very special lodge. From the minute you arrive you feel how unique it is. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Meals are top draw. The views across the plains are unrivalled. We were upgraded to a suite which has a private pool. This lodge needs to be on everyone’s bucket list.

As we were just driving up to Rock Lodge, our guide pointed out the tennis courts - not to us but to the 2 cars behind us from other lodges in the area. He then told us that they turned that area into a covid vaccination site. 5 stars already! We then checked in, more food and absolutely delightful staff! Everyone introduced themselves and made us feel completely at ease. Our first game drive was that evening where we saw many of the big 5. Highlights: the staff, the wine they served, the food, and most importantly our guide Kyle and Tracker Khone, who showed us amazing things every day of our stay. Leopards, lions, rhinos with tusks, elephants, and all their babies!!! Sooo adorable! I can't recommend Ulusaba high enough - my words just don't do it justice. An example - I'm not big on dairy so I wrote 'light dairy' on my checkin preferences. That night, almond milk was in our mini-fridge. The next morning, the chef asked me to clarify what light daily meant (while we were in the bush having a buffet of pancakes - so delicious and Thank you to Read less
