We stayed at the Ulusaba Safari Lodge during our honeymoon and it was absolutely incredible. This was our first safari so we had no idea what to expect, but from the moment we were greeted by Liam at the landing strip we knew this was the best holiday we’d ever taken. The Ulusaba staff are all amazing and took care of everything we could possibly need or want. We loved the game drives - our driver and tracker, Liam and David, were just the best. We had so much fun, learnt a lot, and saw all of the animals we had hoped to see and more. The Safari Lodge itself is beautiful, and never felt crowded or busy. We stayed in the Elephant Room and later received an upgrade to the Treehouse - both were excellent. There is a good gym and the pool area is lovely and clean. Mosquito repellant and sunscreen are both provided. The laundry service is excellent - fast and free of charge. The food and drinks are amazing and abundant - every night when the chef presents the dinner menu you can feel the excitement in the air. If you are on a honeymoon package there is a lovely private picnic in the bush and romantic dinner which is really special. The spa was just the best! We had a massage and both agree it was the best massage we’ve ever had by far. Should you have any health concerns there is a visiting medical service which is free of charge - I required an antihistamine and this was easily arranged. We visited the Rock Lodge for afternoon tea - it’s also stunning, and being up high offers incredible views, whereas Safari lodge is more at ground/animal level - impossible to say one is better than the other, probably best to experience both! Overall we had the best time at Ulusaba and would love to return one day. Read less

Let me say that my main reason for visiting South Africa is for the animal viewing experience. In all the lodges we visited, the accommodation, meals and staff have been very good to excellent. I have been to South Africa 4 times staying at six different lodges rated from the best animal viewing experience as follows: 1. Simbambili 2. Cheetah Plains Lodge 3. Nadeli Lodge 4. Kirkman's Kamp 5. Ulusaba 6. Chitwa Chitwa Lodge Although we did have some good animal sightings in all of these lodges, I felt that the guide assigned to us at Ulusaba did not involve us in the animal sighting experience. Not once in our 4 days at this lodge were we asked what our interests were. For example, when my wife asked what the plans were for the day and what might we see, our guide said trees and grass. When we indicated we would like to see a particular sighting, our interests seemed to be ignored. There were a couple in our safari vehicle who apparently were on their 6th or 7th time and our guide appeared to favor them during the viewings and actually gave them preferential viewing spots. In fact, in one of our sightings, our view was somewhat blocked. We requested that the vehicle be positioned so that we could get a better view which was ignored. The safari was very expensive and we should have been treated equally on the viewings. This couple ensured that they had the front row on every Safari. That did not bother us; however, our guide would focus his conversation with this couple. When we requested that the guide speak louder so that we could hear the conversation, we were ignored. We became very intimidated in trying to communicate with the Guide. When we discussed our animal viewing with others, it seemed that their animal sightings in many cases were better than our viewings in our opinion. For example, our last morning drive, we essentially saw no major sightings the entire drive while others saw Lions, leopards, etc. Our guide said at the end of this drive that he did not want to see the same animals that we already seen without asking what our opinion was on that. A Big Disappointment. On one of our drives, an Ulusaba employee was included. What a coincidence that we saw many animals including the Big Five. We just had very uncomfortable experience with our Guide. Our big mistake was not ask to be changed to another guide. Unfortunately, the General Manager was on vacation during most of the stay and the other staff not once asked us about our safari experience. On the General Manager return, he did ask us about our experience and we discussed our concerns in great detail with him in even greater detail. Read less

We returned to Ulusaba this time with our three daughters (24,19 and 16). This time we stayed in the elephant rooms at Safari Lodge. Did we have a wonderful time? Did we see the big five? We returned to Ulusaba for our fourth visit this month and it feels as though it gets better every time. We stayed in an Elephant room which was lovely, spacious, comfortable, well equipped and watching the animals from the deck was truly special. Our game drives were phenomenal and we saw everything we could have hoped for, including a cheetah, wild dog pups, leopards (and cub), lions, many birds and more. Ryan and Orange made an exceptional ranger and tracker duo and made sure our sightings were truly special. Sandra and the team at the lodge worked hard to make sure we were happy and well looked after, including some special treats for my 40th birthday. The spa is wonderful and i’d recommend that everyone makes time for a treatment if they can. We can’t wait to return in 2020! Read less
