The Victoria Falls Hotel

Victoria Falls, Zambia

Virgin rating

The hotel

Tantalisingly close to Victoria Falls, this grand hotel has views of the waterfall’s spray, the dramatic gorge, and Victoria Falls Bridge, with a private path leading you to the falls themselves in just ten minutes. And this means you’re also close to the attractions of Victoria Falls town. The falls’ inaugural hotel, it has a deep-rooted history dating back to 1904 when it was built for British railway workers. It’s a history still played out in its Edwardian décor and pool, in the High Teas on Stanley’s Terrace (accompanied by views of the bridge and fall sprays), and in the elegant dining of The Livingstone Room, dressed in white tablecloths and sparkling silverware. Victoria Falls Hotel hasn’t forgotten its local roots though, with African feasts and entertainment at Jungle Junction, and braais and beverages served under its thatched gazebos and around the pool.

The Vic Falls hotel is both charming and beautiful. It is a trade off. You are in Zimbabwe but they do have a path to the falls that makes it so easy to visit the park. It is a short walk. No place else has that. I say this a lot. They will try and sell you anything as you walk from the hotel to the national park. Can you blame them? Euros and dollars are worth so much more there. Either buy everything or nothing. If you buy one thing they will never leave you alone. I have often given them my shoes, shirt, even one time my pants because depending on where your room is located and time of day no one will cares if you walk around in boxer shorts as long as you are outside when they see you. Definitely have a frozen margarita at the hotel patio bar. It is amazing. Go to the falls everyday because it is so easy to do from the Vic Falls Hotel. Crossing the border is somewhat of a pain but really helps you understand life in Africa. The Devil's pool is on the other side, and if you make this journey DO NOT miss that. Just hire a driver, but book the guide before you go. They are often sold out, AND you want a guide group of Zambians because they know the Devil's pool so well. And there is an element of danger, so experienced guides, etc. are important. Be extra sure to have breakfast on the Terrance so you can see the Mongoose digging up bugs in the morning. They are adorable. But they are very dangerous. They can kill cobras. How many animals can say that! But just hang back and watch, it is truly amazing if you love animals. And they are not aggressive, leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Read less

This is an amazing classic hotel. The rooms are a little old, which actually adds to the charm. The staff were always so warm, friendly, and helpful. They also offer a great buffet breakfast overlooking the mist of the Victoria Falls not too far away.

Enjoying an early morning coffee on our balcony in the Stable Wing listening to the roar of the falls seeing the mist rising from the falls. Breakfast was plentiful and excellent as were the meals we had each night on Stanley’s Terrace great food and wine. The staff are all wonderful and very friendly making you feel right at home. Old, worn, dated, saggy stained furniture and carpets. The bath robes had obscene stains in back of them (3 out of 4). Service is hit or miss and food on patio is overpriced and under whelming. Breakfast is delicious but you get third degree coming in as if you’re sneaking in. Would never stay here again. Workout room “broken.” Not good enough… Read more
