The Victoria Falls Hotel

The hotel

Tantalisingly close to Victoria Falls, this grand hotel has views of the waterfall’s spray, the dramatic gorge, and Victoria Falls Bridge, with a private path leading you to the falls themselves in just ten minutes. And this means you’re also close to the attractions of Victoria Falls town. The falls’ inaugural hotel, it has a deep-rooted history dating back to 1904 when it was built for British railway workers. It’s a history still played out in its Edwardian décor and pool, in the High Teas on Stanley’s Terrace (accompanied by views of the bridge and fall sprays), and in the elegant dining of The Livingstone Room, dressed in white tablecloths and sparkling silverware. Victoria Falls Hotel hasn’t forgotten its local roots though, with African feasts and entertainment at Jungle Junction, and braais and beverages served under its thatched gazebos and around the pool.

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Wonderful evening with fantastic cocktails!

We have spent the evening here and must say this was the most beautiful place in Victoria Falls after the nature and spectacular landscapes. The cocktails prepared by Admire were fantastic and the charming Skha made us feel warmly welcome. Thank you so much!

Built in 1904 and last renovated in 2013, this iconic hotel looks out over the Zambezi River valley and Victoria Falls. Full of rich history and plenty of stories told by the maps and pictures on the walls of this must visit hotel. Full of rich history and plenty of stories told by the maps and pictures on the walls of this must visit hotel. Although the hotel has lost some of its luster over the years I would recommend it over some of the newer properties just because of the view and history. It is a short walk to the bridge crossing into Zambia, and a brief cab to the Victoria Falls park. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Beautiful situation and gardens, but rooms need upgrades

Sitting on the terrace having afternoon tea watching the rainbow move across Victoria falls was priceless. The staff were polite and friendly and could not be faulted. Sadly for us, the bedroom was tired and dingy and the bathroom could certainly do with an upgrade. We ate at the Jungle junction restaurant for the evening buffet and the food was… Read more

Sadly for us, the bedroom was tired and dingy and the bathroom could certainly do with an upgrade. We ate at the Jungle junction restaurant for the evening buffet and the food was definitely quantity over quality and served cold even the ‘hot’ dishes. Would I recommend this hotel? For situation, it cannot be beaten and it depends if you are willing to overlook the room and buffet. But I still feel, for the price paid per night, I would expect the whole package. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Stunning Hotel. HORRENDOUS FOOD SERVICE.

The hotel DESPERATELY needs an F&B manager. It reopened from COVID back in November and it's obvious from the food service that they have unfortunately lost a lot of experienced staff. The hotel DESPERATELY needs an F&B manager. It reopened from COVID back in November and it's obvious from the food service that they have unfortunately lost a lot of experienced staff. The hotel itself has fantastic history and the service is quite exceptional. If you're standing outside when it rains, staff will come to you with umbrellas. The rooms are made up multiple times a day and misquito nets out up and down for you. However the food service is just non existent. Quite frankly the worst service I have ever experienced. We stayed as a family of 6 over the Easter weekend at the same time there was a wedding. Our first lunch order took over an hour for 6 of us. A simple drink order was incorrect. 3 cocktails took 45 minutes. Trainee staff walked off instead of talking orders. Tables were not made up correctly at the jungle restaurant and cutlery was missing. Water at breakfast was in bottles in the middle of the buffet which were never topped up and they constantly ran out of clean glasses. I asked a chef for a glass and he just looked at me blankly. Lunch orders were incorrect. Wine orders were incorrect. In all honesty, the hotel should not be open right now until these training issues are resolved. It completely spoils the rest of the remarkable hotel. Especially given the price paid for rooms and food. 5 star hotel for sure. 0 stars for food. Read less

This is an extremely beautiful hotel with an iconic location and all the history you could ever want. The hotel and rooms are stunning and well maintained with the view of the falls absolutely breathtaking. Sadly though the staff let the entire operation down not to mention poor communications from booking to check in. Really this review should be focusing on the beautiful terrace, restaurant, the gatsby-esque interior swimming pool area and the stunning rooms. However, the lingering thoughts are mainly on the staff. The reception staff on arrival failed to tell us that there was a wedding planned during the Easter weekend and that the restaurant and pool area would be out of bounds for full paying guests not to mention theobly bar in the hotel was undergoing renovation. This is pretty unremarkable in itself however finding this out by way of a note left in the room that the pool would be closed from 3pm only to be told to leave it at 1230pm is another thing altogether. To be charged full price and only to have half of the hotel available is appalling. Many of the staff were trainees and clearly they have lost many of the more senior experienced during Covid and it really shows. Many more examples can be provided from poor table service, lengthy waits on food and being left to wait for a table only to chase your drinks to find a whole host of tables were actually available all along. Not what you would come to expect of such a high quality hotel that prides itself on service steeped in tradition. Sadly so undeserving for such a stunning hotel. Saying all that, it lives up to its history and is all you hope and expect of it when you first arrive at the entrance for the first time and I would come back with all the hope in the world the staff can live up to what the hotel truly deserves.
