The Victoria Falls Hotel

Victoria Falls, Zambia

The hotel

Tantalisingly close to Victoria Falls, this grand hotel has views of the waterfall’s spray, the dramatic gorge, and Victoria Falls Bridge, with a private path leading you to the falls themselves in just ten minutes. And this means you’re also close to the attractions of Victoria Falls town. The falls’ inaugural hotel, it has a deep-rooted history dating back to 1904 when it was built for British railway workers. It’s a history still played out in its Edwardian décor and pool, in the High Teas on Stanley’s Terrace (accompanied by views of the bridge and fall sprays), and in the elegant dining of The Livingstone Room, dressed in white tablecloths and sparkling silverware. Victoria Falls Hotel hasn’t forgotten its local roots though, with African feasts and entertainment at Jungle Junction, and braais and beverages served under its thatched gazebos and around the pool.

Great views of the mister Victoria Falls - you can not actually see the falls. Because of the coronavirus out break our group of 30 were the only guests in the hotel and we all ate together in the evening. We had beef tenderloin as the main course and almost everyone left it because the meat was so tough. Service wasn't very good either and we had to keep asking for either more water or more wine. Breakfast was very similar. As a 5 star hotel I would expect table service at breakfast but the only thing the bring you is tea or coffee. Hot food is cooked to individual request but you have to go to a counter and order it and then stand around and wait for it - they don't even bring it to your table. Not quite the service I expect from a 5 star hotel. Read less

We really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The grounds were beautiful and there were plenty of dining options at the hotel. The room was clean and we appreciated the turn down service and shortbread cookies during our stay.

We had two fantastic nights at this hotel. We had a room in the courtyard, but it was spacious and exteremely comfortable. The place offers so much, from excellent service where their staff goes far and beyond, to the historic building being kept in meticulous shape. Their beautiful part hold an amazing sculpture museum, and you will be treated to a stylish breakfast with an amazing view. The park is a living thing of its own kind as it houses some cute and rather shy animals. Enjoyed every moment here for three nights, and would have stayed for longer in this museum/fine resort but there us so much to see in Africa. Read less

Our original booking was for two nights in a standard room. This was a ground floor room facing the courtyard which separates the 2 main buildings. While it was perfectly comfortable, it was a bit stuffy and gloomy, even with the vintage air-con on! A medical emergency made it necessary for us to extend our stay by an extra three night and we chose to move to a deluxe room. The hotel kindly chose us a lovely room on the first floor with a wonderful view over the lawns to the falls. While the second room was larger, the furniture, decor and bathroom were the same as in the first room. The rooms and bathrooms will benefit from the planned upgrade. Even before we faced a problem, the friendliness of the staff was evident. Everyone offers a greeting and a smile. Their concern during and after our drama was genuine and touching. One of the joys of being a hotel guest is access to the hotel corridors which are a visual history of the region over the last century. The other delight of being more housebound than the usual guest was the animals on the front lawn, warthogs, mongoose, baboons, monkeys all use the lawns as a pathway. Wilderness Safaris, based in the foyer, were also very helpful and considerate in helping us re-arrange things (and unfortunately, cancel our onward travel to Botswana) so please use them if you want to organise local excursions.
