The Victoria Falls Hotel

Victoria Falls, Zambia

Virgin rating

The hotel

Tantalisingly close to Victoria Falls, this grand hotel has views of the waterfall’s spray, the dramatic gorge, and Victoria Falls Bridge, with a private path leading you to the falls themselves in just ten minutes. And this means you’re also close to the attractions of Victoria Falls town. The falls’ inaugural hotel, it has a deep-rooted history dating back to 1904 when it was built for British railway workers. It’s a history still played out in its Edwardian décor and pool, in the High Teas on Stanley’s Terrace (accompanied by views of the bridge and fall sprays), and in the elegant dining of The Livingstone Room, dressed in white tablecloths and sparkling silverware. Victoria Falls Hotel hasn’t forgotten its local roots though, with African feasts and entertainment at Jungle Junction, and braais and beverages served under its thatched gazebos and around the pool.

BUT ambiance is ruined by constant unending clatter of helicopters taking tourists to view the falls then take pictures of this iconic hotel. There is no peace from these selfish operators. The noise is unbearable. I will not come back until they sort this abomination out. Also I asked the lady on reception where the nearest Catholic Church was for Easter Sunday Mass. She said there was no Catholic Church in Victoria Falls but they had a prayer room in hotel. I went out into the town and Our Lady of Peace church was in the town centre. 10 minutes walk away from the hotel. Why did she tell me there was no church !!!! I cannot believe she did not know this. We have mixed feelings about this property. We were picked up at the airport which we arranged through the hotel. That went smoothly and it wasn't that long of a drive. We saw lots of baboons on the way. When we arrived, we were taken to the VIP area and briefed on the activities we had arranged in advanced. They had it all printed out albeit with some errors which we thought were corrected and noted on a new sheet. Our suite was lovely. Newly renovated with nice furnishings, comfortable bed, a beautiful bathroom and separate living room. I agree with the other reviewer about the slippery marble shower. You definitely need to use the mats (yes, we used both) to ensure you do not slip. Housekeeping was great. There wasn't an outlet for the hairdryer in the bathroom. When I mentioned it to our housekeeper he brought me a lovely mirror with a stand to put on the desk. Definitely an oversight of the designer as well as the marble shower floor. Our room was well attended twice a day with water replenished and sweets. The A/C worked great in our room although, none in the hallways or Stanley's bar which I mentioned in that review. Some of the common area doors to the outside hallway of our ground floor room were open. This concerned us a marauding bunch of baboons came running and actually climbed up to the roof of the hotel. It was a stunning sight we witnessed from our window. There was a man with a long rifle walking the premises that we saw. Our biggest complaint was the mistakes made with our activities. Our scheduled tour of the falls was never scheduled although it was on our sheet. We had to do it on our own. A cab we had reserved well in advance to go to Cassia for dinner never showed so we wound up eating on the terrace. The staff was disinterested when all this was brought to their attention. Especially a man at the VIP desk, who was downright rude to us. We finally heard from a manager Gemma, as we were concerned about our trip to the airport that was also confirmed well in advance. She was nice and confirmed it for us. She also apologized for the mistakes. Most of the staff were nice and helpful. We were given complimentary 25 min spa treatments, and that was good. Our room was over $1600 per night, I guess that is why were VIP's to some extent. I have reviewed The Livingstone Room, The Jungle Room (only place for breakfast), and The Terrace separately. We have no plans to return as the falls are the main attraction which we wound up doing on our own. If our suite hadn't been so wonderful, I do not think we would have been happy at all. We did go over to Zambia to the Royal Livingstone Hotel. See my review for that, it was just for the day so I cannot say how good the hotel is. Other have so be sure to check that if you are considering Zambia. Read less

This is truly a historic hotel from a different time. It is located near the falls and you see the mist (not the falls) from the location as it was originally a depot for the building materials for the historic bridge that links Zimbabwe and Zambia. Our stay at Vic Falls was to give us a few days of "down time" between safaris and yet, we were at one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. The food in the Livingstone Room was excellent as was the service and the sommelier's recommendations. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. PS They make the world's best french fries (pomme frites or chips or whatever) on The Terrace. As well as the cold soups! Read less
