The Victoria Falls Hotel

Victoria Falls, Zambia

The hotel

Tantalisingly close to Victoria Falls, this grand hotel has views of the waterfall’s spray, the dramatic gorge, and Victoria Falls Bridge, with a private path leading you to the falls themselves in just ten minutes. And this means you’re also close to the attractions of Victoria Falls town. The falls’ inaugural hotel, it has a deep-rooted history dating back to 1904 when it was built for British railway workers. It’s a history still played out in its Edwardian décor and pool, in the High Teas on Stanley’s Terrace (accompanied by views of the bridge and fall sprays), and in the elegant dining of The Livingstone Room, dressed in white tablecloths and sparkling silverware. Victoria Falls Hotel hasn’t forgotten its local roots though, with African feasts and entertainment at Jungle Junction, and braais and beverages served under its thatched gazebos and around the pool.

We spent 2 nights at The Victoria Falls Hotel to break up the Botswana and Tanzania parts of our African safari holiday. This hotel has a lot of history and staying there makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time into a movie. If you’re into history and want to get a taste of what it might have been like surrounded by historic artwork, furniture and grounds with colonial style service then it’s worth a stay. It’s fairly close to the falls and you can literally see the mist from the grounds. There is a path directly to the falls but it was closed off. The town centre is a short walk from the hotel too if you want to look around there and buy some souvenirs from local businesses. On site, there are three options for food. The Jungle Junction buffet restaurant provides a decent selection of food and was good but not great, and at dinner time has entertainment (which we found a little touristy). There were enough options for us vegetarians (and my wife who has no dairy too). Our room and bathroom, although spacious and colonial, needed some maintenance to match the expected quality of similar priced/rated accommodation. The AC system was fairly noisy but we did appreciate the mosquito net over the 4 poster bed which made it feel cosy (but it inconveniently only opened on one side!). Our room on the ground floor must have been next to the Stanley Terrace bar/kitchen area which was a little noisy at times. I think some other rooms have already been renovated. We found the staff to be friendly, but being a bigger hotel, we missed the intimate personalised service we were spoilt with at the smaller private safari camps on our trip. Read less

I cannot source it in the UK unfortunately. The hotel gardens and lounges were beautiful with a real sense of bygone times. There is a view of the bridge and the spray and mist from the falls. A superb end to a great day. Read less

We stayed the one night here (and I would stay longer if we could) but had to set off on a four Wilderness Safaris camps stays in Zimbabwe and Zambia. The most restful sleep I obtained in this quality hotel amongst an initiation to Southern Africa was a delight. The food service was very good as well. The beauty of this historical hotel prompted me to get up early so that I may take photos in a quiet environment. Notable guests have included QE2 and the Queen Mother in earlier days. I would not hesitate to recommend this fine hotel or stay here again. Read less

The Victoria Falls Hotel boasts an incredible historic story which you can feel throughout the entire building. Every inch of this hotel is brushed with ancient, grand decor giving it a truly mature and luxurious feel. The hotel has 9 different room categories to choose from. "The standard room"being the most basic and "The Presidential Suite" being the most extravagant. (Although ALL the rooms are luxurious). The real magic appears from the hotels vast, spacious verandah. The verandah provides views of the bridge and the spectacular gorges of The Victoria Falls. You can enjoy high tea or a cocktail whilst you watch the spray from the Falls rise in the distance directly in front of you. The gardens of the hotel are immaculate and there may be families if warthogs that trot by every once in a while. Dining at the hotel is another experience fit for a queen if you choose to dine in the famous, elegant Edwardian-style Livingstone Room which reflects the century-old hotel’s style of grandeur and opulence. Other options of dining/restaurants include Stanley's Terrace, Jungle Junction and the Poolside. Staff at the hotel are extremely tentative, friendly and helpful, tending to the guests every need! There are a multitude of top class facilities provided by the hotel too! From their spa and fitness facilities to their art galleries - guests are really "living" like royals. Read less
