Candi Beach Resort & Spa

Candi Dasa, Bali

The hotel

Secluded among coconut palms on the white sands of Mendira Beach, this Balinese escape has two distinct personalities. One is thoroughly modern, with chic ocean-facing pools for adults and children, subtle contemporary décor, and luxuries like air-con and complimentary WiFi. The other is utterly authentic, bringing you everything you’d expect of an Indonesian island idyll. Candi Beach Resort & Spa’s coconut palm grove gardens open up to visions of Balinese architecture. You can dine on Asian and island dishes overlooking the ocean at Biru (or on Western fare at Ocean Terrace). And its attractions mix a dive centre on the beach with local experiences like Indonesian cookery lessons, leaf drawing, and Balinese and Asian dining events, often with island dancing and music adding to the atmosphere.

We had a double booking - pool villa and garden room because we were initially told that you could not have 3 adults in the pool villa (which turned out to be untrue). The arrangement worked out well anyway but the experiences were quite different. First the major issue is the food. The clientele is predominately German speaking and the hotel understandably caters to their tastes. To us the International restaurant was way too bland. We mostly ate in the Indonesian restaurant which was passable only (and we like Indonesian food) and surprisingly had no vegetarian options. The Italian restaurant was OK but for some reason only open for lunch. This is a very quiet part of Bali (which is one of its major attractions) so outside options are very limited and for all practical purposes you are stuck with the hotel food - of which after 4 days we had had enough. The hotel has been built in several stages. The garden room was obvioulsy an early part. The room was perfectly OK, clean and comfortable but the small terrace was not private and had no outlook. Reasonable for the price but you would not want to spend much time in the room The pool villa in contrast was excellent. The pool was larger than expected as was the villa itself with its own private garden. It was a short walk to the hotel facilities though we noted some of the other villas were set further back and did not seem to have the matuere gardens to provide as much privacy. We did not use any of the 3 public pools but they all looked inviting though there did seem to be a shortage of sun beds. There is a small sandy beach which was great for swimming though becuase the sea was failry rough when we were there it was best accessible at low tide. All the restaurants and bars overlook the sea and the grounds are well kept and spacious. Service was generally very good, efficent and polite, though English skills were sometmes less than you would expect - though to be fair most staff seemed to also have some fluency in German. A two hour free excusion into Candidasa left us struggling to fill in the time after looking at a few tourist gift shops - that's about it. If peace and quiet is what you are after with some vestiges of what Bali used to be like then this is for you. Shops and beach clubs? - go to Seminyak! Read less

The room we stayed in was stunning and would highly recommend. The hotel has three swimming pools two of which are infinity pools that give off some of the most amazing views. The food at Candi is also very lovely. whilst staying here me and my partner enjoyed a couples massage together which was perfect and received the best treatment. Our stay at Candi was so relaxing and perfect its very different to most parts of Bali, it is so quiet and peaceful the only thing we wished was that we had stayed longer and when we do return to bali we will certainly be staying back at this resort. This property is stunning. It is lovely beyond lovely. The grounds are meticulously kept, the rooms are gorgeous, and the restaurants and their staff are delightful. However, there is SUCH a lack of WARMTH from the front desk staff and the administrative folks that it is shocking, especially considering the warmth of the Balinese people and my experiences in other hotels in Bali. I travel to Bali annually and stay all around the island for 4 weeks at a time. I stay in about 6 or 7 hotels over that time so have a good sample of hospitality on the island. This is my first stay at Candi Beach Resort and I am not sure yet if I will return. The Villa was lovely, but some details were missed - the curtains were not installed around our outdoor day bed though most other villas had them, the private pool was not cleaned daily (gosh that sounds bratty - but we did pay for it, you know). Then again there were lovely details included like afternoon tea brought to the villa, laundry delivered in a sustainable box and not plastic, and a terrific sustainability/eco program. We stayed in a Villa, the highest accommodation level. I had some email questions before arriving about booking the spa and some other services and the staff failed to get back to me - I had to follow up multiple times. Then they got a bit defensive in their tone. I asked about whether I should reserve the spa in advance of our trip or if we could get in right away when we checked in. All they did was send me the spa menu. Of course when we checked in, there was very little available and we could not book the spa experience we wanted. We witnessed at least three other couples with the same issue, trying to book and being told nothing was available during their stay (And they replied in a disappointed tone that management told them it would be no problem to reserve when they arrived), so it was not just our bad luck. Seems to me the hotel could do better in creating a process. We had a number of other issues with some checkout requests and an adjustment to one of our activities and while the front desk eventually sorted it out, it took at least 3 phone calls or stops at the front desk each time we had a query, being put on hold, being transferred to multiple people etc - for very simple and basic requests. The language was not a barrier and I also speak quite a bit of the local language myself. If this hotel would like to charge the high end prices that they do (they certainly have high end decor and property) they should work on training their management staff to behave accordingly. The property employees, however, are SO warm and kind - from servers to housekeeping to cooks every person is a delightful and kind human. We took the cooking class by the sea and had the absolute BEST time and highly recommend that. Absolutely. The staff and chef were wonderful and we loved it! THEY are the reason (along with the stunning property) that I give it such a high rating. If it was on management alone I would never stay here again EVER. Visitors should also know that this IS Bali - there will be an occasional lizard or bug in your room. The indoors is the outdoors in many ways - even in the high end villas. We had quite a few cicak lizards and such, but that is the way. There WAS a monkey and her baby on our patio who hissed whenever we went out there for a while. We let the staff know and the woman at the front desk, in a bored tone, blandly asked "well is it still there now?" (as if I was going to go out and check on the angry monkey at that moment when it had just lunged at me). I did not want them to do anything - and told them so - but wanted THEIR staff to know so they did not get an angry mama monkey lunging at them. Oh well. I absolutely hated interacting with their front desk completely. So bland and indifferent and quite rude, really. We want to return with our kids next year (this one was kid free), but are still undecided. Love the property, don't love the management. GO for the property, but know that if you need assistance it will be an irritating hassle - or at least you will be made to FEEL that you are irritating. Read less

The rooms were clean and had great bathrooms and balcony to sit out in the evenings. Breakfast was ok, nothing special though. The coffee was grim. We had the BBQ one night which was well worth the money, 249K and had a good selection of meat and fish. Didn't think the staff were very friendly though and the service in the restaurant was so slow, even though it was nearly empty. There's a great little restaurant opposite the hotel just down the street which is well worth checking out. Read less

The spa bath on the balcony is a great way to relax and enjoy the sea view with a wine or two. The 3 three restaurants all have varied menus and the food quality is very good.
