I have been staying at Holiday Inn Express at 521 S Gulfview Blvd for years. I usually travel and stay there every couple of months. I even spent my honeymoon there. Over the last couple of years I have seen a decline in this hotel. My last trip in March I invited my sons friend and his mom to come with and I spent over an hour on the phone with the reservation desk just to make sure we could get a room on the first floor by the pool. I even confirmed this information prior to arriving and when I got there I was told there were no rooms by the pool available and then got stuck on the 7th floor. The room we had had rippled old carpet and the cleaning crew every morning was knocking on our door at 10 a.m. wanting to come and clean. The elevator went down a couple of times so had to take the stairs from the 7th floor. The coffee maker didn't work and took then an hour to get someone to come and bring a new coffee maker. I even had to call them twice to find out when someone would be coming. The pool needs repair has tiles falling off. They also charge extra $30 per day for parking which with the prices they charge for the room I think parking should be included for their guest. The new hotel I found actually did include parking. We also would eat at Jimmy's and one night went to dinner and waited over an hour to find out that our food order was not put in and didn't even offer to cover our drinks for this mistake. Then for breakfast we couldn't even sit outside on their patio and was told they didn't have the staff so we had to eat inside. I ordered the lobster benedict and was told that they don't have lobster but would use crab meat instead but they still charge you $17. It was never the money for me and had no problem paying the high prices, it was more about the experience and enjoying time away with my family. I really loved this hotel over the years but the last couple visits have not been good so I found another hotel at 1/2 the price and just stayed at the new hotel in July and I am glad I made the switch! As a loyal customer for over 20 years it was very sad to have to find a new hotel because the customer service just isn't there anymore. Read less

We have stayed at this hotel a few times when travelling from UK to Clearwater and it's always been a pretty special hotel to us. This year however we were surprised with how unhelpful the staff were. Some (not all) seemed disinterested. Additionally, the hotel is looking a little tired and could be doing with some TLC. My biggest gripe was the lack of umbrellas and shade around the pool deck. There are only five umbrellas for the whole area and you can't leave a towel early to reserve (which is totally understandable). Talking to the manager she advised that that's all they had and nothing they could do. She also patronisingly advised me that most people come to Clearwater for the sun. Yes that's one reason we do too, but we still would like the option to shelter in the blistering afternoon heat and for my kids to get a little break from it. She advised she'd take my comments onboard for future. However you can see from previous reviews that this has been her same commentary for years now. I was made to feel this was my issue however speaking to fellow holidaymakers they too felt the same. Lots with young babies, one even try to nurse. An elderly gentleman with a skin condition unable to enjoy outdoor pool deck. A few times we approached reception staff with questions, including lost property and to enquire about the nearby water park. Each time met with the same lacklustre and unhelpful responses. As if they just couldn't be bothered. Disappointing from what used to be an awesome hotel. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Great Exterior/Water Views/Pool Deck but Dated Interior

I used points to stay a free night and maybe I was given an outdated room they reserve for these purposes (which is not intuitive - they should give better rooms to IHG members), however it was surprising to find a room that looked like it was from the 70s. I used points to stay a free night and maybe I was given an outdated room they reserve for these purposes (which is not intuitive - they should give better rooms to IHG members), however it was surprising to find a room that looked like it was from the 70s. Green very worn carpet, old fashioned wallpaper and very dated furnishings (think old fashioned wood furniture circa the 70s/80s), and dated bathroom, everything. However, the bed was clean and comfortable and it was still acceptable because the star of this property is the expansive non-cramped pool deck and wonderful bay and sunset views. Other properties including next door have smaller cramped pools where you feel you are on top of everyone else - no privacy, but here, there was breathing space and it was just beautiful. The Fish House restaurant on property offers free shooters at sunset and is literally on the water with beautiful views - really nice staff. So if you can get past the very dated rooms for a great pool area, this is for you. No fitness room/gym. Read less
