The Kimpton Brice Hotel

Savannah, Georgia

The hotel

The South is renowned for its southern charm and The Kimpton Brice Hotel offers it in abundance! Combining old world graciousness with contemporary style, it’s an establishment any modern-day southern belle would be proud to grace with her presence. Rooms are spacious and beautifully furnished with armoires and floor-to-ceiling windows. Upgrade to a premier room and you’ve a balcony to call your own too. As with all Kimpton hotels, there’s complimentary tea and coffee served in the morning and a hosted wine hour early evening – a great way to meet fellow guests and pick up a few sightseeing tips. There are restaurants aplenty to choose from close by but Pacci Italian Kitchen & Bar is very inviting indeed with the atmosphere of a rustic country farmhouse. Settle down at lunchtime and feast on cured meats and pickled vegetables or bag a seat in the garden courtyard come sundown, admiring the stars in the night sky as you sip on a glass of something chilled.

Elegant place with wonderful features like morning coffee and cocktails on evening. Library in the entrance area where you can read or take the book to your room. Good location to all the Savannah attractions

I'm an unabashed advocate of Kimpton hotels. If there is one in a destination I am visiting, the odds are good that I'll be staying there. I've stayed in many of their properties, some multiple times. I recommend the brand to all my friends. Why do I say this? To illustrate that I've got pretty broad experience when it comes to knowing what Kimpton delivers - and when they fail miserably. I'd read some of the recent negative reviews on The Brice, but brushed them aside, because I know the brand well, and also because most complaints seem to be centered around the dog-friendliness of the property. How I wish the only issue I had was a few pampered pooches on the premises. I checked in late, and was met at the front desk with friendly service, a complimentary bottle of wine, and a customary follow-up text, asking if I had settled in and if I needed any recommendations. That first night, I slept well. Most of the guests were extremely friendly, many with well-behaved pups in tow. The room, as well as some common areas, are definitely a little worse for wear than the typical Kimpton property, but I could look beyond that. It was the first afternoon of my 4-night stay where things started to go horribly wrong. I came back to the hotel mid-afternoon to rest and drop off some shopping, only to find a busload of college age (?) students clogging the sidewalk, blocking the entrance, and taking up the entire lobby. I knew immediately this would not be good, but I had no idea how bad it would actually be. These 'adults' seemed to have had no other plans for their stay in Savannah other than to get as drunk as possible, blast music, scream in the hallways at all hours of the day and night, and bang on the doors of adjoining rooms. I called the front desk to report what was going on, but it was met with a nonchalant response and nothing changed. The next day, I asked the front desk staff if I could move rooms. As a solo female traveler, I honestly didn't feel particularly safe. So, I was moved across and down the hall - only to have the same exact experience. These 'adults' had taken over the entire hotel, so it was impossible to avoid them. I again reported what was going on during a stop past the front desk, and the staff member (Daunte?) couldn't look me in the eye, but said that basically there 'was only so much that was in their control' and that 'technically, they are adults' and that 'they could report their behavior to the contact for this group. but that the individual was not actually on the property'. That night, I was rewarded with more screaming, more drunken partying as well as some young guy banging on the door of a neighboring room for hours in the middle of the night. I didn't even bother calling the front desk, and pretty much avoided the staff for the rest of my stay, because I knew that it would fall on deaf ears. Finally, on my last night, the group had checked out, and I thought I'd finally get to enjoy some peace and quiet. I had been making a habit of being out of the hotel for 10-12 hours at a time, that's how much I didn't want to be there. But, no, housekeeping was loudly cleaning the vacated rooms well into the late evening, most likely taking care of the mess these 'adults' undoubtedly left behind. So, I couldn't even relax then, due to the noise, loud conversation of the staff, doors banging, etc. At check out, I was given a bottle of water and a bag of popcorn, because that will fix everything, right? Oh, and the employee at the front desk didn't even care to ask me how my stay was. This was by far the most negative hotel experience I've ever had. It's a good thing that Savannah was so incredibly lovely, because my trip wasn't ruined by any means, as long as I didn't mind not sleeping or feeling particularly safe. The hotel staff/management absolutely have the right to address disruptive hotel guests as well as an obligation to reasonably ensure others' safety, but they simply chose not to. My guess is they couldn't see past the dollar signs that this large group brought in and I guess my experience and safety couldn't compete with that. Read less

We were very impressed by how genuinely kind the staff was. My wife and I would recommend staying here. Have a bite at Pacci next door for dinner. Get the Carbonara. Overall, great location and people.

Rooms are tired, peeling paint, ugly IKEA type furniture. This is not what I expect from Kimpton. Save your money and stay at one of the lower priced chains along Bay St. where the rooms won’t look so run down. I had requested a room near the elevator (in advance) and was assigned a room about as far away as possible. Staff agreed to switch… Read more

I had requested a room near the elevator (in advance) and was assigned a room about as far away as possible. Staff agreed to switch my room. Next room was a connecting room and the walls were so thin that I felt like I was a part of the conversation with the guests next door as I could hear every word quite clearly and loudly ! Third room was better but tiny bathroom, no hairdryer etc and ground floor facing the Main Street (Bay Street) Very disappointing in all respects. . Kimpton management needs to inspect this property and bring it up to standard. Read less

After arriving at the hotel before I checked in I went to the restroom where I saw someone that works in the kitchen exit a stall after flushing a toilet and leave the restroom without washing his hands (after which I made a point not to dine there), keep in mind that men don't use stalls to urinate so he went to the restroom, wiped, and then proceeded to handle food without washing his hands. The people working at valet parking were friendly, as were the people at the check in desk. The cost of parking was over $30 per day in the garage, while street parking is available for $12 a day. Once checked-in we headed up to our room, there was no way to get down the hallway because the maids had their carts side by side blocking the hall. When they saw us approaching the two maids started bickering about who was going to move the cart. The bickering escalated into yelling and eventually we were able to make it past. There was not a single time entering or exiting the hotel without seeing a dog or hearing a dog bark. By my estimate, more than half the guests had dogs with them. Personally, I like dogs, but this hotel would not be good for anyone who does not and there was not indication of the hotel being full of animals when I booked. My main complaint regarding the dogs was the barking at night time and anytime someone walks their dog down the hall many other dogs bark. The room is decent and was clean but the maids forgot to clean it on two days. Instead of having miniature bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, the hotel has regular sized bottles that previous guests have used. It seemed unsanitary and unsafe, seeing as anyone could have tampered with the contents. Further, the water pressure in the shower was not good and the bathtub floor seemed very slippery. Accordingly, the hotel is a 4-star rated hotel that feels more like a 2.5 or 3-star hotel. I have stayed in 3-star hotels for less than half the price of this one that are much nicer. I would not recommend this hotel. Read less
