The hotel

This recently renovated hotel sits directly on a wide stretch of beach in the quiet, pretty resort of Wailea and is ideal for both families and couples. Kids will get a kick out of their own pool with its two water slides, while adults can kick back and sunbathe by their own pool, or relax in the hot tub. We were at the end of a difficult day when we all had limited patience and attention spans, and the afternoon sunlight was aimed directly into our eyes - not an easy job for a photographer to deal with! Kyle was great, bringing out the best in our son, taking great photos, and taking a low-key, easygoing approach. We didn’t think we would end up liking any of the photos enough to purchase one, but we purchased two! Thanks to Kyle and the Blinnk team! Read less

This resort sits on a stretch of Wailea next to the Grand Wailea, Four Seasons and Andaz. Its framed by beautiful black rock edging. There are 2 beaches on either side of the Marriott, shared by other properties. TBH if I was going specifically for a beach vacation I would choose Kaanapali. The most attractive aspects of this resort are the various infinity pools and the waterslide/kids area. Pros: With COVID, this resort has a built-in advantage in that the lodging is spread out very wide horizontally (there's only 1 tower of rooms). So it does not feel overcrowded. The family pool area has 2 pools and gorgeous ocean views (noise level: medium); the adults only area has a great infinity pool (Sheraton Waikiki is the only other that comes to mind on top Hawaii infinity pools) noise level: mellow. And the kids/waterslide area is even further towards the Grand Wailea and was packed with little ones (noise level: very high). So you can pick your poison and spend your time in the area that best fits you and your guests. Callout: The slide area also has a foodtruck that serves very tasty but not diet-friendly lunches (loaded tater tots were awesome and enough to serve 2 people). Downside there is very little seating near the food truck. Wailea Beach Resort had a great solution to the 'reserved beach chair' problem where you go down to the pool and every chair has someone's stuff on it, but no one's there: They actively monitor the chairs and after about an hour of no activity they move the stuff and free up the chairs. I heard a few arguments with the pool guy (whatever he gets paid, he should get more), but we heartily endorse that approach and wish more hotels would do that. The Wailea area in general is much more laid-back than Kaanapali/Lahaina/Front Street. You can stay upscale at the nearby mall and high end restaurants or you can go a couple miles up the road to Kihei, which i would describe as Maui's Myrtle Beach. But there are good affordable restaurants there, we ate at 3's Bar & Grill which had live entertainment and good food & drink. The staff did a great job. Front desk personnel were very professional & helpful. I had to call Security for a bizarre issue where my son had locked himself in the MBR of the suite and couldn't open the double doors (yes, they said that was a first); they were prompt and professional. The management recognized my Bonvoy status in a nice way, and we got upgraded to a suite and some goodies. Everyone was very helpful. Also saw them politely reinforce the social distancing/mask policy to a few guests, which we really appreciate. Everyone at the Marriott did a good job (staff & guests). I'd rate the staff very highly. Cons: Other than the food truck, the food was ok but nothing noteworthy. We had a lunch and a dinner at the Kapa Bar & Grill (live entertainment at sunset). Didn't get to try the main dinner restaurant. Beach chairs are reservation only, and the app showed no chairs available to reserve during our whole stay (!), so we opted for the beach towards the family pool side of the resort. The snorkeling was good, but it's a public beach with a condo property behind it and probably < 5% of the people on the beach were from the Marriott (you can tell from the wristbands). The West side of Maui has far more restaurants than the Southeast Wailea side, and the area has a bit of a Southern Cal golf/residential feel to it, which may be good or bad depending on what you're looking for. If you want a big dose of 'traditional Hawaii' this is not the place for you (although this is a good starting point to visit Hana). I would definitely consider visiting this resort again. If I had to pick a room type, it would be the first floor 'walk out lanai' overlooking the adult pool. No worries over pool chairs, just walk 5 feet to your private lanai which overlooks the infinity pool and beautiful views of the ocean. Would like to play Wailea or Makena golf courses next time. We checked into this hotel late at night. We had hoped to arrive earlier but going to checks we arrived rather late. Our greeting was lack luster, even though we are Marriott Gold, our pre arrival checks did not matter, We got a room on the ground floor. Well that's problem #1, we don't do ground floors because of the noise as light sleepers its on our Marriott profile. High floors is listed as a need, okay well maybe because its late so we checked in. Well then we get the ants on the table, in the sink and crawling in the drain, we asked then to spray the next morning again its now 1am so we want to sleep. At 6:30am someone is either moving furniture or kids are running. Well its all the above and its the staff moving about. I called for a room change and was told that I just had to wait. Its 4pm nothing and I start moving around as I cannot sleep. So day #2, no sleep. We have been awake since 6:30am and we are so trapped waiting to move out of the room that we videotaped the ants, the broken screen and the frayed furniture. The saving grace is May at the front desk and Mario (server at the pool-encountered day 5) that saved our trip. These 2 were the friendliest folks and May came through at 4:30pm on day 2 and moved us. This was a major let down on our honeymoon to waste 2 days at this hotel. Wish we could have moved to Four Seasons, Fairmont or Andaz. Last trip to any Marriott properties. Grounds itself is good View is good Staff -for the most part nice but some could care less Read less
