Ayodya Resort

Nusa Dua, Bali

The hotel

Your very own Balinese water palace, the exquisite Ayodya Resort Bali sits in 11.5 hectares of glorious gardens, filled with temple-style buildings and reflective lakes, which wind around its swimming pools before flowing down to a beach that’s often scattered with colourful beanbags and fringed Balinese parasols. The interiors are as authentic as the architecture, featuring opulent fabrics, dark woods, and ornamental fretwork. The entertainment continues the theme, with soothing spa treatments competing with weekly dinner shows at the resort’s Balinese Theatre, where mythical and magical dance performances are accompanied by the Gamelan orchestra’s music – and by Indonesian and international buffets (for other meals you have everything from 24-hour international dining to fine Italian, Japanese, and barbecue options). Even little guests get local experiences, with turtle releases and fish feeding in between fun at Camp Ananda and swims in their own children’s pool.

We stayed at the Ayodya 7 years ago, a perfect last 4 days of a Bali tour. It was awesome. The lobby is gorgeous, traditional Balinese open architecture with beautiful statues, etc. The grounds are large and well-landscaped with a large pool and smaller fish ponds. The ocean was warm and clear and great to swim in. At the end of each day, we’d walk down to the beach grill to chat and listen to the waves. So, this year while traveling during the holidays and feeling sad about being without our family, we decided to go back to our “happy place” for Christmas. Unfortunately, for us, things had changed. It’s still gorgeous, as is the beach setting. But, apparently they are target marketing for younger partiers and large day-groups who are not actually staying at the hotel. They come in hordes, take over one main area of beachfront lounge chairs, yell, drink for a few hours, leave their trash and head out. They treat the staff very badly and have zero consciousness of anyone outside of their group. Not knowing about this new “activity,” my husband and I — 9-day guests of the hotel — grabbed a couple of lounge chairs with our towels and books to settle in for a couple of hours of swimming. My husband went to get us a drink, and I was suddenly surrounded. A young woman stood about 3 inches in front of me, almost on my toes, and started yelling at a staff member about my husband’s towel being on on “their” chairs. He looked so embarrassed when he caught my eye, and I told him we would gladly leave just to not have to endure their noise, smoking and other rude behavior. The hotel may want to rethink the area they sell to these groups, by having them go further down the beach (it’s just as nice), so they don’t so negatively affect the paying hotel guests. Even worse, cuz it lasts longer, is the insanely loud, outdated, constantly throbbing deejay music on a new stage at the beach grill. It starts in the afternoon, so you’re trying to chat with your partner, but can’t hear them over the “thump-thump-thump-thump” bass beat that actually makes some tables vibrate. Seriously, no one was out dancing in 100-degree temperatures at that time of day. Let people eat lunch/early dinners with soft Indonesian music, then bust out the deejay with his very limited selection of songs with the disco beat at dark. Even then, turn it down a few notches. We were on a high floor away from the beach and could still hear the bass beat. It was awful. On Christmas Eve, I only saw a few toddlers up dancing with their parents. No real partiers here that we saw. The marketing dept. really needs to rethink their target markets. It’s a much more family-oriented place vs a nightclub. Go after them. It was SO much nicer being able to sit down at the beach, have a drink and listen to the waves. That’s real music. In respect, the staff, especially in all the reception, guest area places are wonderful, sweet and helpful. Read less
