Intercontinental Chicago

Chicago, USA

The hotel

There are few better properties from where to enjoy the sights of Chicago and if you're hoping to shop 'til you drop or check out Lake Michigan's beaches, the Intercontinental allows you to do so in style. Thanks to a fabulous location right in the heart of Chicago's Magnificent Mile, take a visit to the Navy Pier, John Hancock Tower and the Shedd Aquarium which are all within walking distance from your front door. A quick explore of the hotel uncovers a couple of restaurants for all-day dining and there's no better place to enjoy a succulent piece of prime beef other than Michael Jordan's Steakhouse. More sustenance can be found in the ENO bar which has a plentiful selection of wines and cheese, although the Michael Jordan bar is always popular around nightcap time. Finally, if you're thinking up excuses to have a cheeky massage in the Windy City then the Intercontinental's spa* will no doubt be able to twist your arm although, a dip in the indoor pool or a few moments in the sauna also offer equally relaxing alternatives.

The stay was quite enjoyable. The room had a great view. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. We had a great Easter brunch at the Tortoise Room which was recommended by the concierge. I do wish they had better TV opportunities ( no Net Flix ) and the movie selection was limited.

Very convenient location on Mag. Mile and luxury amenities within the hotel. Hotel staff are friendly and make everyone feel welcomed during entire stay. Definitely recommend to all travelers. This is the only hotel with staying at any budget.

For the price and supposed history of the hotel, I expected more. I wouldn't be writing this review if somebody from the hotel would have actually contacted me regarding an issue we were having, as they had stated in a direct message to my wife during our stay. Closed Pool: No mention of the pool being closed for our 4 night stay, thanks. Please double check your mobile site. We booked specifically for your historic pool during our stay, thanks for the heads up. Oh, but good news, we can use the pool at the Sheraton, 8 minutes away...through the snow...with kids. Package Discrepancies: This was by far my biggest headache of the stay. I booked through American Airlines / Booking.com for the extra airline miles and, yes, now I know that this is a bad idea. The hotel does not seem to know, and will not take responsibility for, what Booking.com sells. I thought I purchased breakfasts for the stay; not according to the front desk. After a bit of intense back and forth at the front desk, I’m assured that my original as-agreed to package is back, but that it was because they were sorry about the pool. You guys and Booking.com need to get on the same page, you can’t skirt responsibility if you keep selling them blocks of rooms to rent out like this...you guys are partnering to do this. So I’m told this is taken care of, more on this later. On to the accommodations. Drafty Duct Tape Windows: Windows were drafty. There has to be a better option than duct tape! I had to consciously try to not look at it when looking out of the window. Tub: No hot water to the tub, although the rest of the room was nice and spacious. Luckily there was a separate shower. Disappointed kids nonetheless. Ice Maker: We were told that all floors had icemakers, even ours. Long story short, ours didn’t and we wasted time looking for one. Why do you guys not know this? Fridge: Wow! Thanks for the spacious fridge! See the picture for the obnoxiously small area for your personal item (like a coke can). Oh, and the best part, don’t touch any of the other things in the fridge or you’ll set off a weight sensor that’ll charge it to you automatically (not kidding). I guess I must have nudged one, more on this one later too. TV/Wifi: Hey, no password to get on the Wifi, cool! That’s because it’s so slow and unreliable that no one wants to use it. Same with the TV, which kept cutting to the weak signal screen. How much am I paying to stay here? Cleanliness: Room needs a serious dusting. Elevator Lobby: Maybe just a personal thing, but the lobby carpet looked bleach stained. Final Bill: Surprise! Final bill that was slid under my door on the last morning was wrong; included all the breakfasts and I apparently consumed a drink from the mini bar that I’ve never heard of. That morning started out great with a visit to the front desk before breakfast! Naturally, we didn’t have the best stay here, and expected more in certain areas. We did, however, enjoy the very nice floor staff, the beautiful interior of the hotel (sans the pool for us), and the city itself. I was hoping that it would be a stress-free stay, but I wasn’t so lucky. Read less

Excellent location on magic mile - Michigan Ave. Older hotel but quite nice and very helpful staff. Price was great. Easy to get to by taxi though not easy for them to stop out front - but the blue line train from Ohare Airport drops off several blocks away (great for avoiding traffic jams and costs $10 one way).
