Intercontinental Chicago

Chicago, USA

The hotel

There are few better properties from where to enjoy the sights of Chicago and if you're hoping to shop 'til you drop or check out Lake Michigan's beaches, the Intercontinental allows you to do so in style. Thanks to a fabulous location right in the heart of Chicago's Magnificent Mile, take a visit to the Navy Pier, John Hancock Tower and the Shedd Aquarium which are all within walking distance from your front door. A quick explore of the hotel uncovers a couple of restaurants for all-day dining and there's no better place to enjoy a succulent piece of prime beef other than Michael Jordan's Steakhouse. More sustenance can be found in the ENO bar which has a plentiful selection of wines and cheese, although the Michael Jordan bar is always popular around nightcap time. Finally, if you're thinking up excuses to have a cheeky massage in the Windy City then the Intercontinental's spa* will no doubt be able to twist your arm although, a dip in the indoor pool or a few moments in the sauna also offer equally relaxing alternatives.

It took a few days for the InterContinental to grow on me. I suspect it would be better during non Covid times. The staff was really focused on service, but there isn't a bar that's open, etc, so it felt a bit off. It's a large, older building, so it took some time to explore. That being said, the breakfast (included in my package, but not included for all guests) was terrific, every request was fulfilled promptly (my DoorDash forgot silverware and the hotel staff brought a nice place setting even though the room service was closed), and there were a bunch of us in the lobby waiting for our DoorDash to arrive where the doorman was escorting in the dashers with an umbrella due to the rain. The gym is good and the very classy indoor pool is a nice break from the weather. Only real downside is it's in a very crowded area (think noisy at night). That's great for some, but the Kimpton a few blocks away avoids feeling like it's in the middle of a tourist area. But for some, that might be perfect. Plenty of food in the area and things to do. TLDR: I'll definitely stay here again. Read less

First, the location is great. Right on Michigan Ave near the bridge. You are within walking distance from just about everywhere. There are, however, a lot of great properties on Michigan Avenue in better condition. The rooms are small, tired, and dated. Frankly, I have stayed at 3-star properties with better amenities. We had to move rooms because the heat was not working in our first room. In the second room, the fan was so loud that it kept us up at night. The bathroom was tiny, the toilet wobbled and the shower was slow to drain. Our room faced Michigan Ave on the 17th floor and the traffic noise from the street was considerable. Overall, you can do better in Chicago by staying elsewhere. Read less

Excellent location. Helpful and friendly staff. Clean and tidy rooms. Post-Pandemic Intercontinental didn’t seem as busy (or staffed) as pre-pandemic, but the rooms have stayed just as clean and you still can’t beat the service (once the phone gets answered). Sure, I’d love more space and a free breakfast, but I booked last-minute for a suite… Read more

Sure, I’d love more space and a free breakfast, but I booked last-minute for a suite and paid comparable prices to the embassy suites down the way and still had access to valet, baggage assistance, and an architectural gem (the building is beautiful)! For my wife and me, this 4-day stay was the tail end of a 2-week vacation. So, I looked at a number of hotels closely for quite a while as I planned this trip to Chicago. I must say the Intercontinental Chicago was the PERFECT CHOICE. It never ceased to amaze me how the hotel staff would go out of their way to say hello, to help where they could, and to say "welcome back" as we returned to the hotel each day. I am the type of person who could find this annoying - but the hotel staff had a natural way of doing this. I had no idea how much that friendly staff contact would really make a difference - but it does. It really does make a difference. On the check-in day, we arrived quite early for our room, and I was just expecting to store our bags. To my surprise, the front desk staff upgraded our room and got us in early. Perfect! As for location, we were an easy walking distance for shopping, restaurants and Chicago sites. Another Perfect! We opted for the breakfast included with the room and enjoyed one of the best breakfast buffets we have seen - and it definitely was the best on this trip. The quality and variety of the breakfast options were simply amazing. Perfect! Perfect! Perfect! When planning this vacation, I selected the Intercontinental Chicago because of its location and the brand reputation. The surprises were the staff friendliness and the quality of the restaurants. (The Michael Jordan steak house also tops!) Read less
