The hotel

Situated upon a beautiful stretch of beach, you’ll be treated especially well by the friendly, helpful staff at The Beach Club. The rooms are spacious, overlook the beach and out to sea and the bath tub on ground floor rooms only is perfect for a romantic soak for two. You’ve got two beaches to choose from, one on the calm bay side, where you can also try your hand at a wide range of free non-motorised water sports and the other benefiting from refreshing ocean breezes to cool you as you soak up the rays. Coco’s Restaurant has an airy, spacious feel and overlooks the beach, serving an excellent all day menu. Its bar is the perfect spot to seek some shade during the day or enjoy a relaxing pre-dinner drink as the sun goes down. Children are in their element here as the kids’ club (currently closed) is great fun — parents will appreciate the break to enjoy a game of tennis or perhaps pump some iron in the fitness centre. Obviously, lounging around the pool terrace at Coco’s, drinking a coconut crush is another option, especially if topping up your tan is high on your holiday ‘to do’ list!

We arrived to a lovely cool drink and were checked in. The team noticed I was travelling with my Mum so upgraded us to a room with 2 double beds and a sea view was very kind. Yes there is seaweed on the Atlantic beach however this is the case for many resorts - we looked over that beach and had no stench or issues. The Mamora beach is much more picturesque and the sea very calm. The staff on the whole were very friendly and helpful. Cora and Rose always greeted you with a smile. The Italian restaurant was great and worth the extra charge. Docksider is great for lunch and also dinner and the a la carte at Rainbow Garden was also good. Its a huge resort and lots of different areas people use - we never had an issue getting a sunbed and towels are readily available every day. Drinks are good, just ask for the branded spirits if you prefer these. The room was a typical rustic Caribbean room and we were given a full range of toiletries. The cleaning every other day left the room spotless. We used a local taxi to get to Shirley Heights costing $40 return and the driver waited up there for us, It was great, relaxing week away and I would definitely return to St James Club. Read less

I stayed here unexpectedly in June 2022 after my flight home was cancelled. We were previously at the Royalton and had a terrible experience. Coming here was a breath of fresh air. The staff was so friendly, helpful, and went out of their way to be accommodating. The concierge at check in gave our whole group (three couples) Royal Suite waterfront rooms. She did not have to do this as we weren’t even paying for our stay, but she knew that we had a long and exhausting day. So very nice of her. The room was gorgeous and very clean (see photos). The only issue was that it was not as cool as we liked but once the air conditioning was running for a while it was comfortable. The food was delicious. We ate mainly at the Dockside for lunch and the buffet for dinner. Both had lots of options and really good food. There is also a coffee shop with really high quality coffee/lattes, etc. and some baked goods. Such a nice addition and all included. We were only here for a short time, but I would recommend this resort. Read less

The Good -grounds are lovely, great to just walk around the resort - food is good -the staff is great. Always greet you with a smile and always courteous. -rooms are large and well kept The Bad -this resort is far away and secluded from everything. To leave and visit anything requires that you have a rental car or take a "Tourist Taxi" for some exhorbant cost in USD to get out. - if your room is on the Atlantic side, get ready for constant seaweed and the stench that comes with it. -you get to share your fruits and smoothies with all the flies that hang out at the fruit bar every morning. - lack of local fruits and dishes. Mangoes all over the Island, but none at the resort. Never saw plantains, yams, etc. Imagine being at a resort in the Carribean and not seeing pawpaw. Tons of Coconuts on the resort but not one day you could find Coconut water. - the fact that you get dinged with extra fees on checkout. Fifteen USD dollars per day for enhanced cleaning, but your room is only cleaned every two days. - staff available to serve you your meal except at night you could serve yourself salad. I suppose Covid does not spread around salad. All in all, would I return to St. James...not sure. In fact not sure if I would return to Antigua. Other than some nice beaches there is not much there and other Islands offer a better bang for the buck. Read less

Restaurants opening not as advertised , room in need of renovation and modernising it proved to be a disappointment . That's the negatives now the positives : Weather was fab. The bay side beach was great (especially when the drinks cart came along ) and the staff mostly were great . Need to mention a few who went the extra mile or two : Cora (smiler) Samantha , who greeted us at breakfast most days with such a warm welcome ,and Vellie who like us also had aa anniversary during our stay and greeted us at the Dockside Restaurant. We were also looked after by fab waiting staff who made our stay easy for food and drink with their warm welcome and good wishes for " have the best day " . Also we hope Karen nets that big fish she so wants to catch !!!! I don't think we will return to St.James but must say many do . Read less

We had a brilliant 2 week’s at St James’. The hotel itself could benefit from a refurbish but the rooms are spotlessly clean and our room ( in the Royal Suite) was spacious and the balcony had lovely views. The food is fine, with plenty of choice and there quite a few restaurants to choose from. What really makes St James deserve the 5 star rating is the staff! Almost without exception, they are lovely - friendly, helpful and eager to make your holiday enjoyable. Bennett, the tennis coach, is especially wonderful (coaching is extra but well worth it!). Vincent, who manned the pool bar for the Royal Suites) is fabulous - great fun and a dab hand at cocktails! We also loved the little beach bar/cafe beside the watersports beach which was great for a relaxed lunch. For a more formal dining experience there is an a la Carter restaurant, with a small surcharge, which is excellent ; delicious food and wonderful wines and cocktails. The Dockside Restaurant has a different theme every night (Caribbean, Italian etc) & has a great salad bar at lunchtime. The Rainbow Restaurant is a la carte and is really good. For a relaxed coffee & pastry the little treetops cafe is very special. All in all, we had a fantastic and very memorable holiday at St James’ and would definitely recommend it. Read less
