Starfish St Lucia Resort

St Lucia, Caribbean

The hotel

The glossy greens of the hills and infinite blues of the sky, sea, and pool are paired with splashes of sunny yellow around the ocean-facing pool at Starfish St Lucia Resort – and the result’s the very picture of a tropical Caribbean escape. It spots everything you'd want from the Caribbean too. Sitting along the the famous Reduit Beach, it's just a stroll from all the fun and buzz of Rodney Bay, with its marina, mall, night clubs, bars and restaurant and from the spa at its sister hotel. Of course, with its all inclusive promise, you might not even leave your beachside base. Dining and drinking stretches from the bountiful buffet to the tantalising Italian ‘ristorante’, daytime beach grill, and swim-up bar. And little guests haven’t been forgotten either, with their Rexplorers kids’ club and babysitting promising them fun while you enjoy a spot of snorkelling or beach cricket.

We missed a night due to flight delay (not resort's fault) but when we finally did arrive, exhausted, our room wasn't ready and they had us wait for over an hr and a half and would have waited longer had we not raised our voices. Other than that, the resort was quaint, we were very comfortable, the staff and all locals were the friendliest we've encountered. The beach...spectacular with those views! The food...great variety, we didn't feel the need to eat outside of the resort to try St. Lucien food because they gave us a taste of their cuisine every day. The option was there, however, to eat out. Lots of restaurants and bars steps outside the resort gates, and very safe. The bars in the resort...great service! Entertainment in the evenings...could be better. Tours (we did jeep ride to rainforest with 'Smiley' as well as a sunset boat tour to the Pitons with snorkeling)....FANTASTIC! Totally recommend! My stay was for 8days and myself and my friend stayed at starfish, first impressions were good but over the next few days things turned for the worse. The lighting in the room was very poor, only side lamps available so couldn’t see much in the room. U.K. plug sockets were in the rooms which was good and good tv channels. House keeping was hit or miss, one lady cleaned so well and the rest of the days the bare minimal was done, the floors weren’t swept or mopped properly, but beds made and bins emptied. No bottled water available in the rooms so we had to keep going to the supermarket to buy bottled water as drinking water from hotel was giving us stomach problems. The WiFi worked the first two days we stayed but didn’t work the remaining days, so we had to keep going to the pool area to use the WiFi which was annoying. The food is buffet style but very limited with choice and food is bland and tasteless, no flavour at all. Myself and friend had to eat street food mostly from the jerk man or from different hotels as we wanted a decent meal. The pool snack bar was the same, no passion put into preparing the meals, frozen food deep fried isn’t fresh food and very disappointing for all inclusive. I waited 45minutes for a coke and ended up going to get it myself from the bar, no apology from server at all, I ordered a chicken Caesar salad which took 40 minutes to make and when I received it the chicken was missing and the croutons tasted stale. One day I ordered fish and chips and the fish was raw inside the batter, I couldn’t eat it. The staff look miserable and lost when they work, no interaction with guests and when complaining about the service the server just smirks at you. The cocktails and alcohol choices were good but soft drinks were flat and watery, no freshly squeezed juices available which I expected from a caribbean island, just watered down carton juice. I also noticed that certain duty managers would only approach the Americans or whites to ask how their stay was and what improvements they thought was needed at the hotel, but they wouldn’t approach the English people. There was an event which was taking place for jazz festival so a lot of guests came over for that event. There was a beach party one of the days we stayed so myself and my friend attended it. One of our friends who was also at the beach party needed to use the rest room so we took her to the front desk of the hotel and asked if she could use the toilet and was told by front desk staff that it was ok as long as our guest signed in and would leave by 11pm. Couple hours went by and our friend needed to use the rest room one more time, but this time around it wasn’t so straightforward. Myself and my friend who was also a guest at starfish hotel walked our friend to the gate to enter the hotel to let her use the toilet, the gate security refused to let us in, so we insisted on calling the manager to speak to them about why our friend couldn’t enter the hotel when we was told originally that she could use the toilet and visit us as long as she left by the time given. The duty manager named Antonious arrived so my friend tried to explain the situation to him but before she could even explain the situation, he started shouting at her and was being very rude towards us all. He started saying “You people are taking the piss”, so I asked how are we taking the piss if we were told that our friend could use the toilet. He then accused us of taking a tray of drinks to the beach to give away lol I explained that he got that totally wrong as I don’t abuse my all inclusive and that’s not in my nature to do so. He then had the cheek to say “ya’ll come over to our country and think that you can tell us what to do”. At this point I was lost for words, how can a duty manager shout at his guest and be disrespectful to paying customers. Security had to escort him away as he was getting so irate towards us, he should not be in hospitality and it was clear that he didn’t like anyone from England, he only catered for the non blacks. I had to make it clear that I have paid my £1400.00 just like the other guests if not more and I will not be disrespected or stereotyped because of what previous guests have done, us English are not all the same and I am an individual who knows how to conduct herself. He had a cheek to behave that way towards myself and my friends, especially as he was caught taking one of the guests out on a date more than once. In my eyes that’s a sackable offence, but it was ok for him to discriminate against paying guests. Starfish isn’t a 4* hotel in my opinion, it is a 3*hotel and needs a lot of help to make it a thriving business. Staff need more training as these people are stuck in their own ways. Next time I visit st.Lucia I will either stay at the Harbour club or rent a villa, my experience at starfish was horrible and left a bad taste of the island in my mouth. Read less

If you can see past the generally tired nature of the resort, you will see that it is in a prime spot that can be relished. Activities are generally limited to beach water sports (together with some low-key, evening entertainers) but the kayaks, dinghies and snorkelling gear were all excellent. The staff were a delight, with nothing being too much trouble for them. The room was comfortable and clean but there was some background bar music and shouting at night. The beach is a delight with ample sunbeds and umbrellas in a single line on the beach - no row upon row of people here. The food was fairly basic in the main restaurant but the Italian and Asian restaurants were very good (not a massive amount of rotation on their menu though). The grounds were really well maintained. Be prepared for a lengthy transfer to the hotel from the airport. If you were to simply hang around the hotel itself and you want luxury, this is not the place for you. Simple entertainment, great people and an amazing setting are the key factors here, I would recommend it if you want value and a base to get on and just do stuff. Read less

Frequent travelers to Caribbean with my wife, booked with Air Canada Vacations, serviced by Air Canada Rouge. Guests: mostly retirees, or soon to be retirees like us, with very few exceptions. Small resort, everything is within walking distance such as shops, Casino, restaurants, Marina, etc. Travel to and from the airport, by shuttle takes between 1.5-2.0 hrs, depending of the traffic in Castries, and it can be challenging to someone who is sensitive to winding roads. However, it is very nice, taking you through the rain forest, which is spectacular. Resort location: right on Reduit beach of Rodney Bay, on the North West side of the island, 15 minutes taxi drive from Castries, the capital city of St. Lucia. Accommodation: most of the rooms have full or partial ocean view. We were upgraded to a sea/pool view room at check in, without asking for it. Nice surprise, great clean room with excellent location (215), balcony, quiet AC and a large and easy to use, safe. Bathroom slightly outdated, never had hot water problems. The beach is considered to be the best in St. Lucia. First time in St Lucia and have no comparison. However, it is amazing. Not very wide, but extremely clean, with no seaweed, or any kind of dirt, on the grey sand, or in the water. Beaches in St Lucia are public, and, occasionally you will be approached by people selling stuff. The secret is to tell them up front if you are not interested, and they will leave as respectfully as they came.Never had problem finding umbrellas and chaise lounges. Swimming pool. We are beach people, and did not use it. However, it looked acceptable, with a swim-up bar, but not as clean as the sea. Weather. We got night time showers and a couple of daytime sprinkles, which had absolutely no effect on the overall stay for us. The water temperature was 1-2 deg C less than the air temperature, which was a constant 29-30 deg C throughout the week (March 21-28, 2019). Restaurants and bars. Like in other Rex resorts, is limited in choice at the main buffet restaurant. However, the quality is very good. Except for fish, we did not have any other sea food throughout our stay. Nice surprise were the two a la carte restaurants, with great service and food. We decided not to go to a la carte many years ago. However, here we took a chance, and do recommend them both: the Oriental and the Italian. Expect to spend at least 1.5 hrs there. There is also a beach restaurant which is a good alternative to the buffet, during lunch, with limited menu. We used it twice, and were pleased with the food (recommend the pulled pork sandwich). We’re not real drinkers. However, every time we ordered drinks from any of the three bars, we were served promptly with a smile. Nightly entertainment is limited to a one man show (different every night) every night, which goes from Karaoke to Reggae, and everything between. No night club on the premises. However, if you are into night life, there is plenty of all kind of bars and restaurants just steps away from the resort. St. Lucia people are extremely friendly, and the staff at the resort was no exception. Water sports, such as kayaks, catamarans, etc. can be used with or without the assistance of the beach staff, who can go from being nice, friendly, helpful and pleasant (Lucius) to partially, or none or the above, depending of the day. The day entertainment consists of different activities, which repeat, such as horse shoes, balloon toss, ladder toss, bingo, etc., and it is run by one of the entertainment staff members. In our case Nikita was very friendly and did her best to make every participating guest welcome. There were prizes for each event which was won. However, the management cheapened out and now, you have to win five events to get something, which is much less in value than the small bottle of rum you got before. Hopefully they will change the system or the prizes. Trips. We took two trips with the Ai Canada rep, a full day land and sea (I do recommend) and a Gros Islet street party on Friday (which I do not recommend), strictly based on my personal interests and opinion. If you decide to go to the street party, you will be surprised to find out that your trusted local vacation rep, charged you twice the amount $15 US) you will pay to any taxi that shows up at the resort entrance, around 8:00 pm ($8.00 US), for the same two-way trip, including staying with you the whole time, if you prefer. Overall a great vacation on a beautiful island with nice and friendly people. Read less
