The Watergate Hotel

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

The Watergate Hotel has been making headlines since its 1965 launch. Back then it was because of its trailblazing curving architecture, which mimicked the bordering Potomac River and riled the DC conservatives. Then it was for the legendary 1972 Watergate scandal – you can even tour the notorious Room 214 today (if it’s not occupied). But today it’s for its luxury, with musts like free WiFi and bike hire eclipsed by the Argentta Spa’s sleek pool; Kingbird’s fine American dining; The Next Whisky Bar’s amber nectar and matching décor; the summer rooftop bar’s 360 degree skyline views, and its Foggy Bottom location, 10 minutes’ stroll from Georgetown and 1.4 miles from The White House.

My husband and I were touring downtown DC when I suggested we go to the Watergate Hotel for a drink. We had never been there and it was closed down for so long. Upon entering the hotel we were immediately greeted by the staff at the check in desk who were very nice and helpful. They directed us to the Whiskey Bar. The bar was just opening at 4:00 pm. The bartenders were so welcoming. (I wish I could remember their names). We immediately struck up a conversation and settled in with a yummy drink!! We discussed the hotel and they asked had we ever taken the Scandal Tour. We had not and next thing we knew Zacharia Powers, Bell Captain, was there to take us on the tour!! The tour was amazing!! He took us to the room where the Watergate Scandal took place. The room is so full of memorabilia and Zach was so knowledgeable of all the events that took place. It was one of the best tours I have ever taken in Washington DC. If you are planning a trip to DC in the future I would highly recommend visiting the Whiskey Bar at the Watergate Hotel and taking the Scandal Tour. All the staff we encountered at the hotel were A+. We had booked a 3 night stay for April with a nonrefundable rate. Now unable to travel due to the virus, I contacted the hotel and was pleased that I received a timely refund. Very much appreciated and I hope we can get to stay there again soon.

Had a superb time at The Watergate Hotel. Rooms were beautifully arranged and amazing views from the rooftop deck. Staff was friendly throughout the entire experience there. Definitely one of my favourite spots in DC.

Booked a stay (on 1/28/20) to go along with a Kennedy center performance for 3/14/20. Prepaid the full amount. The Kennedy Center cancelled the performance 2 days before the performance and I called Thursday 3/12/20 to cancel and see if there had been a change in the cancellation policy on the previously non-refundable rate I purchased. It took 7 calls to get to a person who was actually authorized to look at and modify my reservation, and I was offered a 50% refund, which I thought was reasonable, and I accepted it. They said they would send me an email confirmation the next day, but they didn't. I reached out to them by email about this, and the following day, they sent me 2 emails. One was from Reservations Supervisor S****** S*****, who tole me that the hotel is offering 50% credit towards a future stay, NOT 50% refund. The other was a cancellation confirmation from the hotel's managing director, P***** F******, which listed a cancellation policy at the bottom of the email as cancellable by 6:00 pm local time 24 hours prior to arrival. I emailed both back on Sunday 3/15/20 after receiving these emails asking for a 50% if not full refund as stated to me and sent to me respectively, but have not received a response from either (now 3 days later). I realize there is a lot of COVID-19 confusion and alarm right now, but I would have hoped that this hotel would have done a better job with it and at least stood behind what they told me, rather than switch the narrative a couple days later. The next time I look for a hotel near the Kennedy center or other nearby sites, I will definitely look elsewhere. Read less
