The Watergate Hotel

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

The Watergate Hotel has been making headlines since its 1965 launch. Back then it was because of its trailblazing curving architecture, which mimicked the bordering Potomac River and riled the DC conservatives. Then it was for the legendary 1972 Watergate scandal – you can even tour the notorious Room 214 today (if it’s not occupied). But today it’s for its luxury, with musts like free WiFi and bike hire eclipsed by the Argentta Spa’s sleek pool; Kingbird’s fine American dining; The Next Whisky Bar’s amber nectar and matching décor; the summer rooftop bar’s 360 degree skyline views, and its Foggy Bottom location, 10 minutes’ stroll from Georgetown and 1.4 miles from The White House.

My parents and I were supposed to stay there for a week in the end of august. The day we arrived it took us more then one hour to do the check in. The hotel was full so they only had a room with one king bed however we were in 3 people. We asked for an extra bed and they said they would arrange it to us. We left the hotel for dinner and when we got back they didnt set up the bed. When we called the reception they left me on hold for 30 minutes and never answered back. I had to go to the reception to hear that the hotel was full and that they didnt had any extra beds ( mind you it was already midnight). I asked to talk to the manager and she refused to come and talk to me, they said that if we weren't happy the solution would be to leave the hotel, and that was exactly what happened. My family and I had to find a hotel at 1 am in DC in the middle of the week because they weren't willing to assist us with a simple task. In addition is important to remind everyone staying in the hotel that the rooftop is super famous so starting at 9 pm the elevators get crowded and its impossible to go to your room in less than 30 minutes in the elevator line. Ohh and my father got stuck in the elevator and when he called the emergency button they said they were busy and would finish what they were doing to then help fix the elevator. Read less

Otherwise I would call the Watergate bare bones. No gift shop or travelers store or kiosk. No place to buy a charger. No binder of local restaurants in the rooms which you will need due to their restaurant's lack of hours, lack luster selection and exorbitant prices. Want to watch a movie? Even an old one (The Rock 1996) will cost you 20$ You are left with basic cable otherwise. Can't get your own ice-no instructions in the room tell you to call the front desk for it, no stocked mini-fridge Yes everything is clean and the front of house staff is very helpful. it seems management needs to step up and invest in There is nothing special about this place besides the location. We thoroughly enjoy this hotel and look forward to coming here often. We chose to have our wedding here this past December. During this experience with The Watergate, Elizabeth was fantastic and made sure that our stay and experience was truly wonderful. She was so attentive, responsive, thoughtful, and is truly an asset to the hotel. Elizabeth was the sole reason my husband and I had a wonderful time and a new reason for us to return. I would recommend staying and booking any upcoming events with them. You'll be in amazing hands! Read less
