The Watergate Hotel

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

The Watergate Hotel has been making headlines since its 1965 launch. Back then it was because of its trailblazing curving architecture, which mimicked the bordering Potomac River and riled the DC conservatives. Then it was for the legendary 1972 Watergate scandal – you can even tour the notorious Room 214 today (if it’s not occupied). But today it’s for its luxury, with musts like free WiFi and bike hire eclipsed by the Argentta Spa’s sleek pool; Kingbird’s fine American dining; The Next Whisky Bar’s amber nectar and matching décor; the summer rooftop bar’s 360 degree skyline views, and its Foggy Bottom location, 10 minutes’ stroll from Georgetown and 1.4 miles from The White House.

I’ll sum it up with this: if you’re really wanting the historical aspect, stay here once; otherwise come for a cocktail and stay elsewhere. The luxury feel lingers, but it’s a little hazy as attention to detail and minor upkeep lacks. I’ll sum it up with this: if you’re really wanting the historical aspect, stay here once; otherwise come for a cocktail and stay elsewhere. The luxury feel lingers, but it’s a little hazy as attention to detail and minor upkeep lacks. The screen door on the patio was damaged and inoperable; the room had a slight stale odor; not all the lights worked, and a digital screen built into the headboard to control the lights created an unpleasant glow that woke me in the middle of the night. I was also surprised by the lack of in-room disinfecting wipes or hand sanitizer, which has been common at every hotel I’ve stayed at during the pandemic. The “included breakfast” was a glorified continental breakfast; bacon was an extra $10 or a scrambled egg with sausage came in at a $25 surcharge. The check-in process was absent of any kind of personality or explanation of the property, room types, pool operation, location of the elevators, etc. Check out was exactly the same — not even a question about how my stay was! This is where I would normally share this comments. Definitely come for the cocktail bar, but at the prices they’ve decided to charge, just come for one. It’s a very interesting experience and the waitress was incredibly friendly and attentive. Overall I’d recommend the bar, but if you’re looking for a true luxury hotel stay I’d head elsewhere. I have never reviewed a hotel on TripAdvisor but was compelled to do so after the worst experience I have ever had with a hotel or a customer service office. The Watergate Hotel falsely advertises special offers and does not hold true to their word. Last week I booked the Argentta Spa Package which is advertised online to include two 50-minute massages. When you click on the link to book the package, it sends you to the booking page which says that the special requested rate has been applied as a “Special Offer” and you just have to pick your room. To confirm my booking and price, as well as book the included spa appointment I called their reservation office and their booking agent Bertha helped me to confirm my booking and select the massage day/time. The booking for the package was actually cheaper than the two spa services on their menu, so I was sure to confirm. I triple checked with her over the phone that the confirmation email and price that I had been emailed was the full and total amount, and that no additional rate would be added. She reconfirmed. After my stay at the hotel, I was charged the full amount for what should have been the included spa services. Of course, I called the hotel to request that they fix the error. Their General Manager, Pascal Forotti, argued (yes, argued!) that I should have known that in their system the booking should have said code: “Spa Package” instead of “Special Offer” and thus I should have known that the spa package was not available (for no explicable reason). I have screen recordings and screenshots of the false advertisement in case they change the website, which I hope they do. The GM offered a complimentary night (which I cannot take advantage of and do not want) but not to refund my money. After over a week of back and forth calls, they settled to refund me with just ONE of the spa services but not the other. They falsely advertised a package and charged me without authorization. I have never experienced such atrocious customer service or seen such egregious false advertising by a hotel in Washington DC. Do not by ANY means stay here, or believe their sale offers or booking agents. Read less
