The Watergate Hotel

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

The Watergate Hotel has been making headlines since its 1965 launch. Back then it was because of its trailblazing curving architecture, which mimicked the bordering Potomac River and riled the DC conservatives. Then it was for the legendary 1972 Watergate scandal – you can even tour the notorious Room 214 today (if it’s not occupied). But today it’s for its luxury, with musts like free WiFi and bike hire eclipsed by the Argentta Spa’s sleek pool; Kingbird’s fine American dining; The Next Whisky Bar’s amber nectar and matching décor; the summer rooftop bar’s 360 degree skyline views, and its Foggy Bottom location, 10 minutes’ stroll from Georgetown and 1.4 miles from The White House.

Was a very nice hotel. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Would recommend. Enjoyed the pool and sauna. Within walking distance to waterfront. Eight minute car ride to Smithsonian museums and attractions.

My wife and I visited a while back to grab a few drinks after hearing positive reviews. This is now our go to spot. My favorite bartender is Tre. He's an amazing bartender. The drinks were amazing. My wife and I go back mainly because of him. He made our experience here worth while. Highly recommended. Always ask for Tre.

My partner and I had booked a standard room but were upgraded to a river-view twin at check-in. The view over the Potomac and Georgetown did not disappoint – although the room showed a few signs of wear-and-tear and the aircon was a bit flakey. The room was a good size and the bed extremely comfortable. The buffet breakfast was excellent, although service was occasionally hampered by lack of staff to cover such a huge restaurant space. But they were friendly and welcoming and overall, offered good value. The nearest metro station is less than 10 minutes' walk from the hotel, so for visitors who'd rather spend their money on something other than cabs, this is worth bearing in mind. Alternatively – walk. You can get to the National Mall and Georgetown easily on foot, and the Watergate's location is almost equidistant between the two. The surrounding buildings of the Watergate complex, while spectacular, haven't quite received the same TLC as the hotel. But nevertheless, they make an arresting backdrop. Read less

This was our first time staying in DC and our first at the Watergate and it was truly spectacular. Every staff member made us feel so welcome, the food at Kingbird for brunch was delicious and our room was large, clean and comfortable. Our kids can’t wait to go back!
