The William

Midtown, New York

The hotel

A newly opened Brownstone Boutique hotel with a private club feel, offering the very highest standard of comfort. Every floor at the William is a different colour and are perfect for a long or short stay in New York. Although modern, it’s a historic building you’re occupying; this was home to the Williams Club since 1924, a private alumni social club for the prestigious liberal arts school, Williams College. Not to be missed is a visit to The Shakespeare Dining Room, a restaurant that evokes an early 19th century English gentleman’s club atmosphere with rich wood panelling, oak parquet floors and marble fireplace. Located beneath is The Shakespeare Pub, boasting a menu of English pub grub, cask ales and wines. The Raines Law Room is another treat – a speakeasy-type lounge with curtained-off booths, service bells for waiters and an extensive drinks list. A unique base from which to explore, we think The William counts as a sight to see and experience in itself!

I was completely happy with everything about my stay! Beautiful room, excellent amenities (a Nespresso machine!) and the nicest staff of any hotel I’ve ever stayed at. I already made a reservation at the William for my next trip to NYC for the holidays.

When arriving, we were told by the only person working there that they could not help us get our luggage up the stairs into the hotel. The attendant was rude and dismissive. We ended up going elsewhere.

Everything was generally great. I love this hotel, it’s cute, well decorated, very comfortable and NORMALLY, good customer service experience. I’ve stayed here many times in the past. However this trip, early morning of check out I asked for late check out availability and they said no, so I complied. I was heading to the elevator right at 11:00am, and then heard my room phone ring so I ran over to answer it, it was the front desk person reminding me that check out was at 11 and needed to be out by then. When I came down, he “apologized” for the call stating he wasn’t trying to push me out, but then followed with the statement “I was just making sure you were no longer in the room”. This was absolutely rude, I have stayed in many hotels all over the world, especially in NYC, and never had I had an issue with coming down just a couple minute late of check out. This was absolutely rude, I am completely disappointed. I almost felt uncomfortable leaving my luggage and shopping bags with them (but I had multiple meetings that afternoon with big wigs). This review does not reflect the rest of the staff in the hotel, or the cleanliness and comfort of the room. Other than this rude man who checked me out on 9/2/21, my stay was pleasant until then. This persons be checked and given some hospitality manners and etiquette lessons, this isn’t a HoJos. Read less
