The William

The hotel

A newly opened Brownstone Boutique hotel with a private club feel, offering the very highest standard of comfort. Every floor at the William is a different colour and are perfect for a long or short stay in New York. Although modern, it’s a historic building you’re occupying; this was home to the Williams Club since 1924, a private alumni social club for the prestigious liberal arts school, Williams College. Not to be missed is a visit to The Shakespeare Dining Room, a restaurant that evokes an early 19th century English gentleman’s club atmosphere with rich wood panelling, oak parquet floors and marble fireplace. Located beneath is The Shakespeare Pub, boasting a menu of English pub grub, cask ales and wines. The Raines Law Room is another treat – a speakeasy-type lounge with curtained-off booths, service bells for waiters and an extensive drinks list. A unique base from which to explore, we think The William counts as a sight to see and experience in itself!

Rooms are hot. For some reason the housekeeping service sets the room at 77 degrees. Happened to several of my coworkers, not just me. Spoke to the front desk about this, but didn't manage to help. Ask for a fan or you'll get no sleep.

High end small hotel. Worth the money for Manhattan. Good location, easy to get to other parts of Manhattan too. Rooms are small, but colorful. Mine had a high ceiling. It's not loud at night, rooms are pretty secluded from city noise. No complaints.

We hoped for more. Upon reflection we’ve decided this was less of a hotel and more of very good bar that happens to have rooms. I was puzzled by the customer service. It felt like everyone was relatively new and unfamiliar with the concept of hospitality. While they tried to be helpful, things repeatedly fell short. The room itself was large and clean. The bed was comfortable. There were a number of things that needed repairing and the little things like bath amenities were mismatched and not what I expect for the nightly rate of $350. Facecloths and bathrobes had to be requested. We did have a reservation for drinks in the bar and this was excellent. Be aware the music in the bar continues until late. We were on the second floor and found we could hear the music somewhat. Not enough to keep us awake but would recommend a higher floor. I would gladly have another visit to the bar for a drink or two, but won’t stay here again. Read less

Excellent location. Lovely and cozy. Feels like you’re a guest in someone’s house. The rooms are small but have what you need. Comfortable mattresses and nice luxury amenities. Be sure to visit the Raines Law room for some cocktails.

The William is a modest and affordable, super hip hotel on the east side in midtown Manhattan. The level of customer service is outstanding, if the rooms a bit small and cramped. Staying on the top floor, the level of street noise and noise from the oh-so-popular bar on the first floor was not bad, but lower floors may be noisy. I enjoyed my stay and would return IF I were assured a room on the 4th floor. One complaint: the front stairs are steep and the door man didn't seem keen on helping with bags. Management, in contrast, was keen on helping wherever they could. That made a huge difference in the stay. Overall, good value and fun environment. Recommend. Read less
