The William

Midtown, New York

The hotel

A newly opened Brownstone Boutique hotel with a private club feel, offering the very highest standard of comfort. Every floor at the William is a different colour and are perfect for a long or short stay in New York. Although modern, it’s a historic building you’re occupying; this was home to the Williams Club since 1924, a private alumni social club for the prestigious liberal arts school, Williams College. Not to be missed is a visit to The Shakespeare Dining Room, a restaurant that evokes an early 19th century English gentleman’s club atmosphere with rich wood panelling, oak parquet floors and marble fireplace. Located beneath is The Shakespeare Pub, boasting a menu of English pub grub, cask ales and wines. The Raines Law Room is another treat – a speakeasy-type lounge with curtained-off booths, service bells for waiters and an extensive drinks list. A unique base from which to explore, we think The William counts as a sight to see and experience in itself!

When we got to our room it was a lot bigger than we'd expected. We had two double beds (only expected one for us to share), there was a small kitchenette, wardrobe with bathrobes and a balcony. The bathroom contained small Loccitane products, which we loved. The hotel location was excellent, just minutes walk from Grand Central and the streets around weren't too noisy (we'd stopped closer to Times Square on a previous trip and there was always noise throughout the night). The staff here were so friendly and helpful, they carried our luggage out for us and always gave us useful suggestions on where to eat. Would definitely stop here again. Read less

Good location, but the problem is the bed, really small for 2 people, in my opinion the bed for room 404 is for single not for 2 people. The room is cleaner, have coffee machine on the room. If you stay alone ok, but the bed for 2 people its not good, me and my husband can't move on the bed.

This is a lovely small boutique hotel in a very central position in Mid-Town. The staff are great, the rooms generous and well-equipped and prices are reasonable for what is currently the most expensive city in the world (Business Traveller). However, a few points, some easy to improve-on others a little more difficult: a) It would be nice if the porter helped you to carry your 28kg bag up the steep steps when you arrive from a 7 hour flight and the 2 hour trawl through immigration at JFK. b) The lobby area is way too dark. I know this is to create ‘atmosphere’ but come on guys, it’s of no benefit at all. c) There’s no breakfast served on a Sunday d) There are no light switches by the bed. You have to turn them all off via the switches by the door and feel your way to the bed. The answer is to turn in the bedside light and then go and turn them off but with a little more thought with the wiring when it was refurbished, this could have been avoided. Other than those points, it’s a good place. Read less

Location-5 Bed quality-4 Shower-4 overall-2 Very difficult to locate, because the hotel is jammed into brownstone facade and blends into its neighbors. Unfortunately, the steep stairs to enter the building offers no obvious handicap accessible way into the property. Of the 7 times we entered and exited the building, only once did a doorman help us, and that was only after I lugged my large bag 1/2 the way up the stairs our first night. Check-in was easy, and the staff was very pleasant. In any case, the elevator was probably 3 foot by 3 foot. My wife and I along with our two bags completely filled the very slow ancient elevator. The room was nice and had what appeared to be a large space. The unusable art deco decorations and two small chairs that children sit on occupied the floor space. THERE IS NO DESK in the room! I have never seen this before in my life. I was here on business and there is no desk to place my laptop. There were no plugs next to the bed to plug in the cell phones. We had to plug a single phone in the bathroom and leave one on the floor to charge. There was a SINGLE drawer in a small side closet that was large enough to place my underwear and socks....and that is it. I'm serious. We had to live out of our suitcases for the next 2 days. It was so non-functional it was pathetic. I am so surprised to read the other reviews about spaciousness etc...because that was not our room or experience. I was in penthouse 603 with a tiny balcony. When I called to the front desk to ask where the heck the desk was (plenty of room), they said that "some" rooms have a desk and they could try and move me the next day. In the morning, I went down and asked if there was any place I could work on my laptop. He let me into the lounge and yep...you guessed it....no tables anywhere. He just brushed me off and said: "sorry, this is what we have". I located an adjacent room on my own that had a dining room table and sat in there. No electricity, but at least I could type. Decent room if you just need a bed and won't be there for more than a day or two, but I would avoid staying here again as a business traveler. Sadly, it was SUPER quiet, with a really nice shower and bed, which are usually the most important items I look for. But who thinks to ask for clothing drawers and desk when selecting a hotel room that any run down hotel offers as a basic item. It was just bizarre. Read less

I'm currently staying in this hotel for a 6 week long stay. The penthouse rooms are well appointed for long stays with a kitchen, oven, utensils, dishwasher, fridge and the necessary Nespresso machine! You get a complimentary water most days. On level 3 are new washing machines and dryers. Generous cupboards & shelves for all your clothes and a large safe which is big enough for a laptop. The decor is great, and just like the pictures. The rooms are pretty much sound proof and you're never aware of other guests on the floor. Wi-fi is excellent in the room and very good for a business traveller. The staff have been really friendly and helpful during my stay. When you're away from home for so long it is certainly made easier when the staff are so friendly and as accommodating as they are. When I go home I'm really going to miss the man that opens the door each morning and wishes me a good day, or the man on the front desk who greets you good morning with a big smile. Read less
