The William

Midtown, New York

The hotel

A newly opened Brownstone Boutique hotel with a private club feel, offering the very highest standard of comfort. Every floor at the William is a different colour and are perfect for a long or short stay in New York. Although modern, it’s a historic building you’re occupying; this was home to the Williams Club since 1924, a private alumni social club for the prestigious liberal arts school, Williams College. Not to be missed is a visit to The Shakespeare Dining Room, a restaurant that evokes an early 19th century English gentleman’s club atmosphere with rich wood panelling, oak parquet floors and marble fireplace. Located beneath is The Shakespeare Pub, boasting a menu of English pub grub, cask ales and wines. The Raines Law Room is another treat – a speakeasy-type lounge with curtained-off booths, service bells for waiters and an extensive drinks list. A unique base from which to explore, we think The William counts as a sight to see and experience in itself!

Formerly the Williams University Club, it has been reincarnated with a nod to William Shakespeare and imaginings of a proper British dining club with a boutique hotel. There are two "speakeasy" rooms recalling the glamour of the Prohibition era plus a full restaurant serving delicious pub food. The hotel rooms are very well-designed with good space. The only criticism I would have is lack of a proper work space for the business traveler, but it's not a deal-breaker to staying there. Read less

This is a good spot. Not the best in NYC, but certainly not the worst. Well designed rooms, spacious. Good water pressure, comfortable bedding. Didn't go to the restaurant but it was hoppin'. Convenient location, etc.

Now for something completely different .......... The William is really the William Shakespeare Hotel on 39th. It has a 17th Century historic feel to it. Great mattresses, great bar, great restaurant (separate review). Once inside you are surrounded with dark mahogany and walnut woods draped with red velvet sash's. While you may be in NY, you… Read more

Great location, but room lacked essential equipment, no Kettle / very poor iron / confusing TV. Tight on space for two double beds. Very boutique downstairs but cold modernist upstairs and rooms. Handy old English pub in the basement.
